Pembrokeshire Velo ChampionsPembrokeshire Velo celebrate success

On Saturday 26th November, the county’s premier cycling club, Pembrokeshire Velo, held their annual prize-giving evening at the Freshwater Inn, to celebrate another great season for its members.
With a combination of new members and the improved performance of current riders, the club competitions were even more closely contested than in recent years, and the Velos enjoyed one of their most successful seasons ever away from home, competing in open races and national championships. In Particular the club’s juniors and juvenile members gained an impressive reputation in the South Wales District, gaining an array of Welsh titles along the way.

Tight finishes

In the club time trial championship, the long running rivalry between Nick Brown and Peter Lloyd continued, with added competition this year from top juniors Luke Cornish and Jack Lear. After a season-long battle the title went to Haverfordwest man Lloyd, but even after a whole year of racing the gap between first and fourth was less than 1mph!
In the lady’s competition Melanie Morgan edged out Debbie Philips after another display of close racing and David ‘Chubbolini’ Hawkins showed off his impressive sprinting ability at Pembrey race circuit, on his way to victory in the Club Road Race Championship.

Welsh Velo championsTop performances – and Welsh champions

Top climber James Shaw dominated the hill climb league as expected and up and coming juvenile Dan Colman topped a closely fought handicap competition after showing an impressive improvement over the season.
The Club now has a number of Welsh Champions who have already begun the training to defend their titles next year. Particular highlights included winning the team events in both the shortest and longest races of the year, the Welsh Hill Climb and 12 Hour Event, which goes to show the range of talent coming out of this ever-expanding club.
