Sue steers the Borderers and Scarlet Ladies to success
Whitland Ladies Rugby Club has been going strong for almost five years and one of those carrying the burden of work is Sue Davies, who is team manager and has been instrumental in setting up a ‘Rugby Taster’ day at Parc Dr Owen, in the middle of the town, on Sunday August 1st from 11am to 1pm.
Sue and Co are looking to encourage others to join the club and share their enjoyment of the oval ball game – and one only has to chat to Sue for a short while to see how much she gets out of something into which she puts so much effort!
Sue Davies could certainly lay a strong claim to be considered as one of the busiest ladies involved as an administrator in local sport because she is not only the team manager of Whitland Ladies’ rugby team but doubles up in the same role with the Scarlets regional ladies’ rugby team.
Not content with that, Sue was also Whitland club treasurer for a while, using her experience in the banking business to keep the club financially solvent.
Involved from the start
Sue has always been a rugby follower since her late husband played for Cardigan but it was only when her daughter Sarah began playing the game that she became heavily involved – and readily agreed to be involved at Whitland when they started up a ladies’ team there. Since then she has taken on a range of duties which included attending the training nights, making sure that players are aware of everything that is going on, looking after injured players and their well-being afterwards, sorting out kit and anything else that springs to mind.
This will be her fifth year at Whitland and Sue would say that there are a smashing bunch of girls playing there, with the emphasis on having fun as well as trying to win matches. They started out at under 13 and under 15 levels, and after merging with Carmarthen Ladies for a while have done well since - and came third in their section last campaign in front of good crowds who turned up to cheer them on.
Welsh representation
They currently have Welsh representatives in Sue’s daughter Sarah, who set out in college at UWIC and eventually became captain there, and Natalie Walsh, who hails from Fishguard – and at the moment Chloe Howells and Rebecca Norris are in the Welsh Under 20s squad, both able to play second row or No 8. They also have five girls in the regional squad as Sarah plays hooker or prop, Natalie also plays in the front row, Emma Summons is an excellent scrum half, Jenny Hawkins is a blind-side flanker or hooker, and Rebecca Norris plays second row or No 8.
Real success and great support
Sue also does the same job for the Scarlets’ regional team at under 18, with Sara looking after the first team, and she is delighted at the way the Scarlets allow them to use superb facilities like the training barn. She is lucky that another Whitland lady in Ceri Newton does a brilliant job with the first aid, and Sue must be doing something right because last season saw the Scarlets beat the Ospreys, the Blues, the Dragons and North Wales, where there was a long journey and several girls got travel sick but were still good enough to help the Scarlets maintain their 100% record.
Sue also finds time to support the Borderers at home matches and when they are on the road she cheers on the second string or the youth. There is no doubt that Sue Davies has certainly done her bit for Whitland RFC and both the Borderers and the Scarlets are very lucky to have her so involved!
