27th July 2010 County Under 10s so close to victory Mid Glamorgan Under 10s (134 for 8) beat Pembrokeshire Under 10s (129 for 5)
Chris rescues Mid Glam After winning the toss, Mid Glamorgan batted but tight bowling by James Davies (1 for 27) and Lewis Hough (0 for10) ensured a slow start. Change bowlers Noah Davies (4 for 20) and Geraint Rees (1 for 4) maintained the pressure and Mid Glam were soon tottering at 42 for 6. They were rescued by Welsh International, Chris Matthews, who hit a quick-fire 44 runs off only 36 deliveries to enable the home side to reach 134 for 8 in their allotted 35 overs. Oliver Wheeler (1 for 22), Aled Phelps (1 for 12), Niall Hooper (0 for 7) and Ewan Griffiths (0 for 19) were the other bowlers used in a very good Pembrokeshire bowling display. Confident start after lunch After lunch Pembrokeshire openers Niall Hooper and Daniel Llewellyn both started confidently but were removed with the score at 15 for 2. Kyle Williams also started well but soon fell to the spinner for 4. Skipper Geraint Rees steadied the ship with Curtis Hicks before Hicks went for 8 leaving the score at 55 for 4. An excellent partnership of 61 between Rees (34) and James Davies 19 not out), brought Pembrokeshire within striking distance of a famous victory but despite Jacob Lay’s 7 not out at the end, Mid Glamorgan hung on to scrape home by five runs in a very tense finish, with Pembrokeshire scoring 129 for 5, their best batting performance of the season. Coach Alex delighted Coach Alex Kemp was delighted with the improvement shown by the team and has high hopes for the boys in the Aberystwyth Festival in August.Pembrokeshire team: Geraint Rees (Capt.), Niall Hooper (Neyland), James Davies, Daniel Llewellyn, Curtis Hicks (Burton), Noah Davies, Ewan Griffiths (Llangwm), Aled Phelps, Jacob Lay, Lewis Hough (Hook), Kyle Williams, Oliver Wheeler (Narberth). July 2010
Tom’s moved up an age group with Wales Carew’s talented young wicket-keeper Tom Scourfield is catching the eye with his glove work and batting because as well as playing for Wales at under 15 level he has now been chosen for the Welsh under 16s to play three matches in as many days. Tom and his new team-mates take on Staffordshire at Aberdare on the 27 th July and then entertain Coventry and District a day later. Then it’s off on the 29 th July to play against Somerset at Cleeve Cricket Club. It rounds off a remarkable time for Tom because he has also helped Carew Cricket Club reach the Harrison-Allen Bowl Final and the Ormond Youth Cup Final, so he is a busy young cricketer. But it is his Welsh matches that come first in terms of time and PembrokeshireSport.co.uk wishes him three days to remember for all the best reasons.
19 th July 2010 Ladies’ Cricket Final: Hook Ladies secure silverware Hook Ladies (112 for 3 & 69 for 6) beat Neyland Ladies (74 for 3 & 72 for 5) Umpires: John Austin & Steve Blowes Scorers: Joy James (Hook) & Jenny Seaton (Neyland) Venue: Carew Cricket Club Woman of the Match: Emma Summons (Neyland)
They were good value for a 38-run lead at tea time, although Neyland showed typical grit to limit Hook to 69 for 6 in their second innings. It meant they had reach 108 as the target set for victory but the Hook bowlers maintained their discipline and Kate Miller showed the way in the field with a brilliant catch to get rid of key Neyland run-gatherer Julie Garlick off the bowling of talented teenager Jemma Phillips. Lynch pin Sam Sam Rossiter was again the lynch-pin of the Hook first innings as they batted first, the Welsh international scoring an undefeated 62 out of their 112 for 3 scoreline in their allotted 20 overs. She stroked eight fours and found solid support from another Welsh cap in Joe Kerrison (23) and Leanne Jones (11) whilst Naomi James bowled well for Neyland to claim 2 for 35 alongside Poppy Taylor’s 1 for 25. Garlick adds spice Neyland also had a Welsh international leading the way as Julie Garlick batted throughout the innings for her 49 not out (three fours) alongside Poppy Taylor’s 17, which took them to 72 for 3 against tight bowling by Leanne Jones (1 for 9), Jemma Phillips (1 for 23) and Kath Huxley, a little disappointing since they found themselves 38 runs adrift at the half-way stage. Hook quickly in tatters But Hook’s second innings was soon in tatters as Sam Rossiter was adjudged lbw from the very first ball of the innings, to the evident delight of bowler Nicola Morris and her colleagues. Hook’s jitters continued when Jo Kerrison was dismissed for three runs in the second over, bowled by another Welsh cap in Naomi James, to leave Hook in real trouble. But Leanne Jones batted well for her 25 not out and Kath Huxley called upon all her experience to give support with 17 runs so that Hook struggled to 69 for 6. Reasonable target too much It left Neyland with a reasonable target of 108 for victory, with Julie Garlick again to the forefront as she reached 31 by the 13 th over, but with wickets falling steadily at the other end against Alice Thomas (1 for 17), Kath Huxley (1 for 17) and Leanne Jones (1 for 32). But then Garlick fell to Jemma Phillips, ably assisted by Kate Miller, and Neyland were restricted to 72 for 5 so that Hook were worthy winners by 35 runs. Post-match presentations The trophy was presented to winning skipper Sam Rossiter by Dianne Morris (Burton), who is the chairwoman of Pembrokeshire Ladies’ cricket, and with loud applause when umpires Steve Blowes and John Austin decided they would give the ‘Player of the Match’ award to Emma Summons for her outstanding fielding for Neyland Ladies. Now the battle for the league title continues for the next four weeks, with Hook ladies just two points ahead of their counterparts from Neyland in what should be another photo-finish between these real rivals!

13 th July 2010 County youngsters lose by a single wicket Pembrokeshire Under 10s (83 all out in 34 overs) lost to Carmarthenshire Under 10s (84 for 9 in 35 overs) Venue: Dafen Cricket Club Pembrokeshire’s talented young under 10 players travelled to Dafen to take on their counterparts from Carmarthenshire and although they lost by a single wicket they pushed the opposition all the way so that the winning run didn’t come until the final ball of their allocated 35 overs. County captain Geraint Rees (Neyland) lost the toss against Carmarthenshire and was invited to bat on the artificial track at Dafen but Pembs got off to a poor start and stood at 4 for 3 after 5 overs. But a good partnership of 34 by Lloyd Bartlett (Hook) and James Davies (Burton) moved the score to 38 before Lloyd was bowled for 12. James soon followed for 10 to leave Pembs at 43 for 5 and wickets then fell at regular intervals, leaving Pembs all out in the 34 th over for 83, with Aled Phelps (Hook) 8, Lewis Hough (Hook) 6 and Adam Hart (Narberth) 5 not out. Slow start for Carms Carms also started slowly and at the halfway stage reached 33 for 4 wickets after some excellent bowling from Lewis Hough (7-1-10-2), James Davies (7-2-12-0) and Nathan Coaker (Narberth)7-0-11-1. But then Garmon Gwnfi and Harry McBride took the score to 64 before Nicholas Jones (Burton) bowled McBride for 13. Carms then moved the score to 78 for 5 and an easy win looked likely until Geraint Rees bowled his last over and clean bowled three Carms batsmen, including the dangerous Garmon for 24. Jacob Lay (Hook) also claimed a late wicket, leaving Carms needing 4 to win off the last over with one wicket in hand - but Pembs were very unlucky as Carms scored the winning run off the last ball of the game. Aled Phelps and Oliver Wheeler (Narberth) also bowled well and Curtis Hicks (Burton) fielded brilliantly, whilst Kyle Williams (Narberth) was excellent behind stumps. Pembrokeshire's fielding was excellent as they hit the stumps on numerous occasions - and they will have learned the importance of using all their overs from this narrow defeat.
County under 14s learn a batting lesson Pembrokeshire U14s (110 all out) lost to Cardiff & Vale U14s (112 for 7) Venue: Oatfield Park, Burton Championship Game:
Hole blasts vital late runs Pembrokeshire started the second half of the game in a strong and confident mood through good bowling from openers Jordan Howells and Shaun Whitfield, and this soon pressurised Cardiff into a mistake when George Wilkins swooped onto the ball and run out the Cardiff opener, Bennett for just one run. The other opener, Matthews, was soon removed by Whitfield when he had scored only three runs but it was then that Hanley (22) and Davies (24) got together and seemed to put the game beyond Pembrokeshire. But good bowling from Campbell, Phillips, and the spin twins, Carter and Wilkins, helped keep the pressure on. The spin twins made the break through with a wicket apiece, and gave Pembrokeshire a glimmer of hope. They continued to field well but in came Cardiff’s Ben Hole (21, including 5 fours) and blasted Cardiff to victory, despite Jordan Howells finishing with figures of 2 for 23. Pembrokeshire were 20 runs short, and this proves that if they batted their overs out, the result could have been very different! The Pembrokeshire team was; Jordan Howells (Narberth), Mike Carter (Llechryd), George Wilkins (Cresselly), Dan Cole (Haverfordwest), Lewis Hicks, Marcus Read, Shaun Whitfield (Carew), Gavin Campbell (Burton), Jack Bowen, Gerraint Phillips and Josh Watson (Whitland).

First Division statistics from the Webb’s wonderful selection from Tavernspite Garden Centre
Our tables rank the players in actual number of runs scored or wickets taken, rather than pure averages, with the averages also included for those who like to know both sides of the story! Top openers – and a new top all-rounder! On the batting front, the Carew opening pair of Nick Scourfield and Ian Sefton top the table, confirming their right to be considered far and away the best opening partnership in the county – and it is refreshing to see Narberth youngster Kyle Quartermaine in third place as he has been batting so well of late, as well as being a useful bowler. Fewer wickets on sun-baked tracks! On the bowling front, another new name sits atop the rest as Saundersfoot’s pace man Danny Caine has grabbed 26 wickets, five more than another young bowler in Adam James (Haverfordwest) and Rob Scourfield (Carew), currently side-lined through injury. The rest are a mix of youth and experience but the number of wickets overall seem to be lower because of the good wickets and run gluts enjoyed on sunny days so far.
Few all-rounders
And finally . . . Thanks again to Paul, who is still a very good player with Whitland, and Janice (a very helpful and knowledgeable scorer), for providing us with the details. It is a lot of hard work but we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk do appreciate your efforts – and others love to read them!

Much better performance On Sunday, June 27 th , Pembrokeshire entertained West Glamorgan at Carew and this was a much better bowling and fielding performance with some excellent catches and run outs. Batting first, Pembrokeshire reached 153 in their 40 overs, with Scott Jones (47), Greg Thompson (22), Kurtis Marsh (18) and Dafydd Bevan (13 not out). The wickets were evenly spread but with three good run outs well taken by Dafydd Bevan, who had a good game behind the stumps. There were also some excellent catches, especially by Elgan Roberts. Julian’s really in the groove
Julian played rugby and cricket for Pembrokeshire Under 11s with Headmaster Andy Grey, a big influence at Hakin, and Brian Griffiths, Burton also noticing and nurturing Julian’s cricketing ability when he was deemed too young to join elder brothers Lyndon and Barry at Herbrandston. He played for the Vale of Glamorgan Under 15s, enjoying playing against his former Pembrokeshire team mates in particular.
At the age of 15 Julian was fast tracked into Llantwit Major Cavaliers Ist XV as a strike bowler and hard work in the winter at Sophia Gardens saw him also develop his batting skills. Julian had a year out from Llantwit with Sully Centurions, playing in every game in their unbeaten league campaign when they were crowned East Wales Division 1 Champions, But he is firmly committed now to Llantwit’s drive towards first division cricket in his ninth season with the Cavs despite having only just turned 24 years of age at the end of April. Last season he received the top batsman award, having scored 1040 runs, including three tons in the Division Three Championship- winning side with former Glamorgan star Andrew Davies making the presentation. In the close season Julian once again spent time in the nets attracting interest from another former Glamorgan player, Darren Thomas, now player coach at Mumbles.
Runs galore and a new record
Julian has now passed the 5000 run milestone for Llantwit and he is still no mug as a bowler either having claimed 210 dismissals at an economy rate of 3.5.In last week’s game against Christchurch he was kept back to rip through the middle order with 4 wickets, all clean bowled, including a hat trick. As well as a superb batsman/bowler Julian is a very athletic fielder with 56 catches and seven run outs to his name and he is renowned for his exceptional run saving and strong arm. Naturally Julian has ambitions to get on and if he can maintain current form he is sure to get noticed! 28 th June 2010 County Under 14s just lose out in a thriller Gwent Under 14s (194 for 4) beat Pembrokeshire Under 14s (183 all out) 45 Overs Championship Game Venue: Croesyceiliog CC, Cwmbran Gwent won the toss and decided to bat on what looked like an excellent batting strip at Croesyceiliog Cricket Club ground, which has a large slope across the wicket and it was clear to see that cover would be needed on the bottom boundary. The captain, Jordan Howells, provided that cover for his bowlers and with some excellent bowling and fielding, Pembrokeshire got off to a good start as Gwent were on the rack, and after 20 over’s were only 62 for as Gavin Campbell took 3 for 38, Shaun Whitfield claimed 1 for 32 and Jordan Howells bowled well for his 0 for 26. Soon a partnership began to flourish between Gaine and Tovey for Gwent, a partnership that remained intact for the rest of the game. Gain was dropped a few times but survived and Tovey went on to score a great 50 through some straight hard hitting before Gwent eventually set a tough target of 194 for 4 Great start for Pembs Pembrokeshire had let Gwent off the hook, through some bad dropped catches, but nevertheless they went into tea confident off passing the Gwent total – and Pembrokeshire had a great start through openers George Wilkins (34, including 4 fours) and Mike Carter (25, including 4 fours) and found themselves on a credible 94 for 2 off 30 overs. Good contributions followed with Jordan Howells (33, including 4 fours) and John Curran (18) – but Gwent took their pace attack off at this point and brought on a pair of devious spinners. The Pembrokeshire middle order failed to score at any rate during this section of the game and soon found they were behind the run rate. Gavin Campbell had a late flourish with a contribution of 22, including 4 fours, but Pembrokeshire eventually collapsed under the pressure of good bowling from the Gwent bowlers and were all out for 183. Fell just short but learned a lesson It was a great game but Gwent went away with the points. What was pleasing to see, however, was that there was not much of a gap between the two sides and Pembrokeshire now know, as they proved in this match, that they can compete with the best! 14 th June 2010 Campbell inspires county under 14sLlandovery College U15s (152 all out) lost to Pembrokeshire Under 14s (206 for 7) 30 overs per side friendly Venue: Llandovery College
Pembrokeshire batsmen, opener Dan Cole and Gavin Campbell had other ideas as both boys hit the ball hard to all areas of the field with a great array of shots. Campbell was eventually caught out for 93 (17 fours and 3 sixes) and Dan Cole nearly managed to bat the whole innings but was caught going for late runs on 67 (11 fours). Shaun Whitfield came in at the end, hitting his way to a quick 21 (2 fours, 1 six) as Pembrokeshire ended the innings on 206 for 7 in 30 overs. Llandovery got themselves off to a good start from Davies (14), Harvey (22) and then from James Morgan, hitting a very quick 60 (6 fours and 5 sixes) so that while Morgan was at the crease, Pembrokeshire were in danger of losing the game. But his patience eventually wore thin and he was bowled by Campbell. Good bowling and fielding from Pembrokeshire stopped Llandovery from progressing any further in the game and they eventually ended their innings on 152 for 10 in 26 overs. Luke Ryan performed well behind the stumps, making several good stops, and the county’s bowling figures were as follows; Dan Cole 2 for 4, Gavin Campbell 2 for 18, Geraint Phillips 2 for 19, Jack Bowen 2 for 26. The team; Jordan Howell (Narberth), Mike Carter and John Curran (Llechryd), Dan Cole (Haverfordwest), Gavin Campbell and Will Ridge (Burton), Shaun Whitfield and Marcus Read (Carew), Geraint Phillips and Jack Bowen (Whitland), Luke Ryan (Neyland). County Under 14s maintain winning runPembrokeshire U14’s (180 for 9) beat Mid Glamorgan U14’s (165 for 8) 45 Overs per team championship game Venue: Oatfield Park, Burton Pembrokeshire won the toss and decided to bat on an excellent Burton wicket and they had a great start from the openers Mike Carter (19) and George Wilkins (29. including 4 fours), who both batted sensibly against some fast but erratic bowling from Mid Glam’s opening bowler Smeeton. George hit some beautiful shots but then managed to run himself out. Captain Jordan Howell (23, including 3 fours) also contributed well with the bat but again found himself stranded taking a silly run and was out. He was well backed up by John Curran (21, including 3 fours), and Geraint Phillips (17, including 3 fours) before Pembrokeshire closed their innings on 180 for 9 in 45 overs. Mid Glamorgan also got off to a solid start and quickly moved on to 55 before openers Leppard (20) and Davies (20) were both removed by Gavin Campbell. However, another partnership started to blossom between Colton (19) and Jarred Davies (42, including 6 fours). Davies, especially, hit the ball very hard and while he was out there Mid Glam looked in full control. But great bowling from John Curran and Jordan Howell put the pressure on the batsmen and the turning point came when Davies was caught on the boundary with a brilliant catch from Campbell. Howells, Curran and co tightened the clamps with some good bowling and Pembrokeshire picked up their first win off the tournament with Mid Glam finishing on 165 for 8 off 45 overs. It was good to see that Pembrokeshire managed to bat for 45 overs and gave a good all- round performance and encouraged each other well throughout the game. The boys will need to keep this up and bring their enthusiasm through to the next game when they meet the favourites, Gwent. The team: Jordan Howell (Narberth), Luke Ryan (Neyland), Gavin Campbell (Burton), Mike Carter and John Curran (Llechryd), Dan Cole (West), Lewis Hicks, Shaun Whitfield and Marcus Read (Carew), Geraint Phillips and Jack Bowen (Whitland), George Wilkins (Cresselly).
County Under 14s lose by one wicket!Pembrokeshire U14s (132 all out) lost to West Glamorgan U14s (133 for 9) 45 over per team championship game Venue: Ynysygerwyn Cricket Club Pembrokeshire again won the toss and decided to bat first, but soon found themselves in trouble on 3 for 8 runs before a great partnership of 93 soon blossomed between team captain Jordan Howells and vice captain Gavin Campbell. It was a sensible partnership from both batsmen, with selective shots and good running between the wickets before Campbell was eventually bowled on 45 (7 fours), and Howell soon followed after being caught, scoring 33 (2 fours). There were also good contributions with the bat from Geraint Phillips (8) and a solid innings at the end from Marcus Read (6 not out). The innings closed on 132 for 10 in 31 overs, Pembrokeshire losing out on 14 overs of batting. West Glamorgan started well but a break through by Geraint Phillips in the sixth over, after a spell of good aggressive bowling, put Pembs back in the game. Glamorgan’s Donald and Ace settled things down again and put on a stand of 40. Pembrokeshire continued to bowl and field well to put pressure on, but a couple of dropped catches let the West Glam boys off. Pembrokeshire were still in the game and soon West Glam found themselves 9 wickets down. Glamorgan’s batsman Price had other ideas, though, and hit the ball hard. Pembs had their chance in the form of a catch to win the game, but this chance was dropped and West Glam went on to win the game. Shaun Whitfield’s figures were 2 for 11 and Mike Carter’s were 2 for 21. Looking back on the game Pembrokeshire should have batted second on a slightly damp wicket, should have batted for the 45 overs, and could have won the game if all the catch chances were held. The positive points where that the team tried hard until the end of the game and they encouraged each other to do well in what was a great game of cricket! The team; Jordan Howell (Narberth), Mike Carter (Llechryd), George Wilkins (Cresselly), Lewis Hicks, Shaun Whitfield, Marcus Read (Carew), Dan Cole (Haverfordwest), Gavin Campbell (Burton), Jack Bowen and Geraint Phillips (Whitland), Luke Ryan (Neyland). 9 th June 2010 County under 12s win well at Montgomery
Pembrokeshire travelled to the picturesque Montgomery Cricket Club in Mid Wales and came home with a very good win as reward for their all-round performance. Batting first in a game reduced to 35 overs due to weather, Pembrokeshire scored 159 for only five wickets, with a maiden half century by Tomos Lewis which included one six and four fours. George Williams (30), Jack Parkinson (23), Greg Thompson (20) and Jacob Knox (13) were the other main run scorers. It was good to see lots of different batsmen contributing to an excellent total in the conditions. Ainscon was the main wicket taker for Mid Wales with 2-15 Good in the field I. Pask (31) and S. Rees (24) were the main run scorers for Mid Wales as Jack Parkinson (2-7), Kurtis Marsh (2-8) were the most successful bowlers, with George Williams, Jacob Knox and Greg Thompson picking up the other wickets. Varun Nambiar and Dan Griffiths made their County debut and Dafydd Bevan continued his excellent development behind the stumps. This sets the Pembrokeshire Team up for the next game against last year U12’s Champions – Mid Glamorgan.

County youngsters edged out by Cardiff & The Vale
Venue: Oatfield Park, Burton
Despite an excellent innings by Toby Hayman, Pembrokeshire suffered a defeat against a Cardiff & The Vale side. Cardiff & The Vale won the toss and asked Pembrokeshire to bat on an excellent Burton wicket with a fast outfield. Pembrokeshire openers, Jack Davies and his Burton team mate and captain Toby Hayman looked quite solid for the first 19 overs and put on 82 for the first wicket, when Jack was out caught for 37 (six fours).
Top innings for Toby Toby was joined at the crease by Daniel Richards but the partnership only lasted another five overs when Dan was run out for 3. Steffan James came into bat and immediately the run rate increased with both batsmen playing attacking shots until Steffan was bowled for 30 which included three fours. Harry Thomas joined Toby and continued the fast scoring but on 88 Toby was run out for 88, an excellent innings that included 12 fours. Pembrokeshire finished their 40 overs on 221 for 4 with Harry not out 21 (three fours).
Aggressive batting When Cardiff & The Vale batted they were aggressive from the start. They lost their first wicket on 17 but this brought together O’Gorman and Brown and they plundered the bowling to all parts of the Oatfield Park ground in a display of powerful stroke play, aided by some slack fielding and two dropped catches. O’Gorman was eventually out, caught Hayman off Jack Davies for 82, but Conor Brown kept his cool, ending on 100 not out and finishing off the match in the 38 th over. The only bowlers to take wickets were Steffan James (2-36) and Jack Davies (1-56).
Thank yous A big thank you to the parents for once again providing wonderful refreshments and Burton Cricket Club for making their ground and facilities available to the County and their groundsman, Brian Griffiths, for preparing an excellent wicket and fast outfield.

Pembrokeshire Under 10 cricket team travelled to Merthyr on Sunday looking to improve on their early season performance against Mid Glamorgan, whom they had been soundly beaten by at Llangwm
Hook Ladies are the 2010 Skelfayre Cup winners after beating old rivals Neyland Ladies in an absorbing clash at Carew Cricket Club, making it four wins on the trot for Sam Rossiter’s team.
Pembrokeshire won the toss and decided to bat, but soon found themselves under the cosh when opener George Wilkins was caught behind early on in the game. Mike Carter and Jordan Howells, through some sensible batting, brought the score on to 58 before Carter was caught out on 16. Dan Cole (14) batted on with Howells, who played a real captain’s innings (31 including 4 fours), and there was also useful contributions from Jack Bowen (9) and Gavin Campbell (8). After what seemed a good start the innings closed on 110 in 38 overs, as Pembrokeshire failed to deal with the spin bowlers once again. Also, they lost out on 7 overs of batting, and this proved to be an important mistake at the end of the game since Cardiff now had 52 overs to pass the Pembrokeshire score.
Excellent fight-back
