Cresselly complete Alec Colley hat-trick

A delighted Cresselly skipper Rhydian ReesCresselly 2nds (139 for 8 & 170 for 3)
beat Haverfordwest 2nds (146 for 6 & 92 all out)
Umpires: Arthur Brady & Barry Wood
Scorers: Des Brace & Ros Phillips
Venue: Treleet, Pembroke

Cresselly Seconds made it a hat-trick of victories in the Alec Colley Cup Final as they came from behind at the tea interval to beat their counterparts from Haverfordwest by 71 runs on the Treleet Ground, Pembroke.

Skipper Rhydian Rees not only raised the coveted trophy aloft in his first season at the helm but also received the man of the match award from donor Mike Leighs as his buccaneering innings of 61 not out helped Cresselly to a massive second innings score of 170 for 3 that put his side firmly in control.

He was ably assisted by talented teenager Jack Murphy, who contributed a cultured 42 not out to their unbroken partnership of 104, before Stefan Jenkins and Matthew Lewis, who showed his total commitment to the club by travelling back from Bristol to play, broke the back of The Town’s second innings to set the seal on success.

Cresselly 2nds Pre matchUseful tally

Cresselly batted first at Treleet, and although they lost Neal Williams with the total on 21 in five overs they gradually accelerated as Scott Arthur belted four fours and a six in his 39 alongside Rhydian Rees’s 24 (four fours) and Jack Murphy’s 19 (three fours).

Avron Roulstone was the pick of the Haverfordwest bowling, with 3 for 14 in his five overs, whilst Nigel Delaney (3 for 36) and Idris Davies (2 for 25) were the other wicket-takers, and there were two catches each for skipper Richard Scriven and keeper Mike Hooper, as Cresselly posted a useful first-innings score of 139 for 8 from their allotted 20 overs.

Town stay in contention

Haverfordwest 2nds pre matchHaverfordwest also started well via Adam Raymond (two fours and a six in his 24) and Andrew Phillips (17) before the latter was well caught at long-off by Murphy to give Stefan Jenkins a wicket before his brother Sion also got in the action by trapping Raymond lbw. A major turning point came when Mikey Jones was run out by a direct hit from Scott Arthur when he had scored 20, and Nigel Delaney also looked threatening until he was neatly stumped by Neal Williams for 19, off Matthew Lewis’s left-arm stuff. Haverfordwest lost two further wickets in quick succession but then skipper Scriven (31 not out) joined forces with Mark Cross (13 not out) to put on 37 runs from the last three overs, with Scriven’s cheeky reverse sweep for a boundary off the last over giving his team a seven-run interval advantage.

Rhydian Rees and man of the match sponsor Mike LeighsRuns – and wides - galore

James Morris struck early for Haverfordwest after tea as he bowled Neal Williams for a single but Scott Arthur and Rees added 43 runs in very quick time before Arthur tried to add to his 28 runs but was well caught by Andrew Phillips to give Morris his second scalp. Idris Davies also removed Damian Arthur cheaply with the help of Mark Cross but that brought Murphy in to join Rees and the tempo was immediately increased as both punished anything loose and ran well between the wickets. Rees finished up with five fours and a six in his 61 not out made from only 47 deliveries whilst Murphy’s undefeated 42 included four boundaries and was made from only 32 balls. The Cresselly tally was increased by 31 extras, included 10 runs from consecutive wide deliveries that flew to the boundary and showed the pressure exerted on the bowlers.

Stefan starts an early collapse

Haverfordwest needed a good start if they were to chase a winning target of 164 runs but Stefan Jenkins ruined their hopes as he claimed the early wickets of Raymond, Phillips and Mikey Jones, all caught at mid-off by Damian Arthur, to have The Town reeling at 17 for 3. Worse was to follow because Matthew Lewis then grabbed three wickets in four balls, soon added two more with his infectious enthusiasm and the score stood at 37 for 7.

We've won it!Nigel Delaney top-scored with 29 runs (two fours and a six) but Stefan Jenkins came back to mop up the tail with Lewis, finishing with 4 for 6 as Lewis claimed 5 for 26. Sion Jenkins removed Hooper for ten runs to leave The Town reeling at 92 all out, with Cresselly as worthy winners and gaining a measure of revenge for their defeat the day before, when the teams met in the league.

Deserved Congratulations

The presentation ceremony was undertaken by County Club chairman Trefor Evans, who was delighted to welcome sponsor Dicky Parry and his wife Gill, from the Dyrham Service Station in Robeston Wathen to present the medals to both teams. Pembroke CC president David Williams presented the Alec Colley Cup to Rhydian Rees and Mike Leighs and Tony Scourfield’s choice of Rees as man of the match was a popular one because he scored 24 and 61, as well as leading the team soundly in the field.

Trefor Evans thanked the sponsors for their wonderful support and he rightly congratulated Pembroke ground staff Kevin Jenkins, Jonathan Davies and Paul Fraser for their endeavours in making the whole ground a real picture, and thanked the ladies for a terrific tea.
