Ken Morris Cup Final:

Carew Thirds retain Ken Morris Cup

Ken Morris Cup - Haydn Shapcott raises the trophy aloftCarew Thirds (198 for 1 & 111 for 6) beat Whitland Thirds (98 for 8 & 107 all out)
Umpires: John Williams & Gelly James
Scorers: Ceri Brace & Jenny Scourfield-Davies
Venue: The Lewis-Lloyd Ground, Narberth

A superb innings of 102 not out by Chris Cole helped Carew Third XI retain the Ken Morris Cup in an entertaining final against their counterparts from Whitland on a beautifully prepared wicket at the Lewis Lloyd Ground.

Huge onslaught
Cole came to the crease after Adam Hughes (16) had been trapped lbw by veteran Whitland skipper Gwynne Phillips and started an onslaught on the opposition bowling which saw him smash 14 fours and three sixes as he reached his century from only 47 deliveries, with only nine dot balls as he dominated the innings. He received ideal support from his captain, Haydn Shapcott, who stroked five fours in his unbeaten 50, and their cause was helped even further by 30 runs for ‘Mr Extras’ as they raced to a massive 198 for 1 in their allotted 20 overs.

Ken Morris Cup - CarewTight bowling
Whitland responded with a stand of 35 by experienced openers Peter Wright (26) and Steve Fraser (19) but they had already used up seven overs as Joel Read and Matthew Phillips bowled good lines for Carew. Sean Whitfield and Micky Dabbs kept things tight as they both picked up three-wicket hauls and only Hefin Thomas (16) managed double figures as the youngsters in the Whitland team found it hard to settle in, with 20 extras taking them to 98 for 8, exactly 100 runs adrift on the first innings.

Solid batting
Whitland needed wickets aplenty to give them even a whiff of a chance after tea but Carew batted steadily via Adam Hughes (10), Chris Cole (16), Matthew Phillips (11) and Sean Whitfield (10) alongside Shapcott, whose sensibly-compiled 38 (five fours), made sure that Carew reached a solid 111 for 6 to give Whitland a daunting target of 212 runs for victory. Stuart Harries (4 for 25) was the pick of the Whitland bowling as Emyr Jenkins and Geraint Phillips claimed a wicket apiece.

Ken Morris Cup (R-Up) Whitland 3rdsExcellent fielding
The Whitland cause certainly wasn’t helped as Wright was run out for only eight runs and Hefin Thomas fell to a good catch by Chris Cole of Joel Read for only a single. Fraser (19) and Dafydd Evans (24) kept the scoreboard ticking without being able to find any real impetus and Carew took some very good catches, three of them by skipper Shapcott and others coming from Johnny Griffiths and Joel Read

. Jack Burns played some nice shots in a little cameo for Whitland but they were dismissed for 107 to give Carew victory by a big margin – but having played their part in what was a great advertisement for third team cricket!

Ken Morris Cup - Chris Cole Awards presentation
The post-match presentations were conducted by Hugh Simkins and he rightly congratulated a number of people for their involvement, including Richard Howell for his overall organization of the competition, plus Bobby Simons, Ian Hughes, Emma Richards and Rhian Howell for their hard work on the field. He also thanks GD Harries for sponsoring the superb trophies, the Dingle for supplying the teas and Debbie, Rhian and Heather for doing the hard work in preparing it.

The trophies were presented by Gregg Morris on behalf of the Morris family, with man of the match adjudicators Steve Davies and Glyn Cole picking Chris Cole as the winner of a cut-glass trophy. Also receiving trophies were scorers Ceri Brace and Jenny Scourfield-Davies, plus umpires John Williams and Gelly James, who had all worked well as a team – and it was skipper Haydn Shapcott who was clearly delighted to raise the Ken Morris Trophy aloft on behalf of his talented Carew players!
