Micky Phillips really looks after sporting cash!
It would be very difficult to find someone more involved in sport, both as an administrator and participant, than Micky Phillips, whose chosen sports are cricket and football.
Micky still plays cricket for Haverfordwest and after playing football for about 30 years is now a referee in the Carmarthenshire league, where he travels to the Llanelli area most winter Saturdays because as a member of the management committee of the Manderwood Pembrokeshire league he can’t referee in this area.
Micky had previous experience as assistant secretary and junior league organiser before recently taking over as the Hon Treasurer of the Pembrokeshire League – and he completes an almost unique sporting double since he is also the Hon Treasurer of the Antur Pembroke County Cricket Club.
Huge shoes to fill
Ask Micky about his work and he would say,
“In both sports I have had huge shoes to fill. In cricket I took over as treasurer from a wonderful character in Roley Edwards, who had done so much sterling work and was a great role model for cricket”.
“It’s the same in football because Keith Scourfield had been treasurer for 26 years and is held, with Roley, in very high regard by all involved in the sport. Luckily, both are readily available to give advice but I am eager to just get on and do my best!”
On the cricket front, Micky has been involved at Haverfordwest for 25 years and – surprise, surprise – was treasurer at The Racecourse for many years. He played in a number of Alec Colley Cup finals and especially recalls playing in a match at Carew where he was joined by son Christopher alongside his old pal, the late Steve James, who also had his sons Julian and Adam involved and youngest son Ashley also on the touchline.
Cricket Club involvement
Micky says he enjoyed being involved with the committee at Haverfordwest alongside characters like Steve James, Rob Summons, Tony Myles, Stuart Williams, Arthur Chapman and Bill Carne. When he was assistant secretary of the County Cricket Club his work involved collating all the results on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings –
“I really enjoyed all the phone calls” says Micky with a chuckle!
Now that he is Hon Treasurer his role has changed to collecting membership money, attending cup finals, looking after the 150 Club – and making sure that the books balance after paying the bills and accounts.
“The hardest part is having to deal with complaints and discipline matters – that really is hard work”, admits Mr Phillips.
Football regular
Back on the football front Micky played for Johnston, the Cricket Club and Solva, where his dad had been president. He was ready to play anywhere for a game and turned out in almost every position from goalkeeper to striker. Micky was assistant secretary for six years, with responsibility for collating results, organising fixtures and referees.
“It was far harder than in cricket, where matches off are cancelled, because all games not played have to be rearranged. If there had been lots of bad weather the revised fixture list needed some sorting, I can tell you!”
Carmarthenshire referee – and a Bluebirds’ fan
Micky is a very keen participant and also has tried his hand at golf, tennis and table-tennis. His love of being involved can be gauged by the fact that he referees in football because he wants to put something more back into the sport, even though it means a round trip of between 60 –100 miles every Saturday. Ask him about the differences between the game here and in our neighbouring county and he mischievously says,
“It’s about the same standard but a little more physical at the top – and definitely with more whingeing!”
He also enjoys supporting Haverfordwest County, when he has the time, turning up with old Johnston chums Gary Stephens and Micky Algieri, and bumping into former cricketing pal Rob Summons, now the chairman at the Bridge Meadow.
“I love being involved” says Micky, “and I have met some wonderful characters and made great friends”.
He certainly is committed to both football and cricket – and we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk wish him many more happy years as an administrator and participant!
