The 2010 Harrison-Allen Final : Preview

( . . . to Cup Final Preview )

Carew Pen Pictures

Phil Jones (Capt)       Aged 41
Sales Representative

In his first season as skipper and in search of the double since Carew also sit at the top of the table. A destructive middle-order batsman when he eventually arrives at the crease and still one of the best fielders in the side as he has maintained his high fitness levels as a very good footballer. Also known as Jonah
Nick Scourfield       Aged 39
Bank Clerk

The ‘Mr Reliable’ of the Carew batting line-up who is again in the top three of the county’s batting averages as he accumulates runs with some regularity. Nick is a county regular and this will be his eighth final appearance. AKA Rushie
Ian Sefton       Aged 29
Oil Refinery Process Worker

One of the most dangerous opening bats in the county because he can play shots all round the ground and puts opposing attacks under pressure from the outset. Another in the top three of the county’s batting averages and definitely a key member of the Carew side in his fifth final because he can also bowl and is excellent in the outfield. AKA Seffie
Brian Hall       Aged 35
Council Worker

The alleged joker of the side and a forceful left-handed bat who has already appeared in five finals at Lamphey and now Carew. A good batsman in a crisis and also a more than useful fielder. AKA Johnny Lager
Simon Wood       Aged 39
Medical Oxygen Engineer

A powerful No 3 or 4 who showed his class in the semi-final as he claimed 5 for 40 and then top-scored with 56 runs to take Carew to victory. Rightly regarded as one of the best all-rounders for many years and this will be his ninth final, some of them at Kilgetty before he joined Carew. AKA Woodie
Robbie Hicks       Aged 42
Financial Adviser

A former Welsh international who had stepped down to skipper the seconds but was called in for the semi-final, where this strong left-hander showed he still has what it takes in scoring 43 not out. Still good in the field as a real competitor, his inclusion could prove a boost for Carew. Aka Hicksie
Tim Hicks       Aged 27
Independent Banking Officer

Another key all-rounder for Carew who doubles up as a semi-professional footballer with Carmarthen Town. His pace bowling and big hitting in the middle order could prove decisive – if his footballing commitments allow him to make an appearance at Cresselly! AKA Harkie
Rhys Davies       Aged 20
Student

Leading the promising breed of young talent that is breaking out at Carew, he is a fast bowler who can also score vital runs in the lower middle order, as he has done a number of times this season, including the semi-final, and field really well. Definitely one to watch for many years as he plays in his second final. AKA Harpo
Scott Helmich       Aged 20
Student

Returned to action this season at Carew and his left-arm quick stuff has given him plenty of wickets and provided an extra dimension to the Carew attack. He claimed 3 for 13 in the quarter-final and 2 for 24 in the semi – so will be confident going into his first final. AKA Helmo
Ceri Brace       Aged 17
Student

The ‘pocket dynamo’ of the team and already with a rich vein of experience in Welsh Schools and first team cricket at Carew, where he recently took 5 for 31 with his canny leg-spin in a top of the table clash with Narberth. Always full of eagerness and a great asset to the team in all that he does – this will be his second final. AKA Braces
Tom Davies       Aged 18
Student ( and part-time heavy plant operative)

Another of the talented ‘Young Guns’ who has made his break-through into first team cricket and grabbed the chance with runs and wickets, including 4 for 34 against Neyland in a previous round. Another who is going to be a very good player with Carew for many years to come. AKA Ballack
Aled Griffiths       Aged 23
Student teacher

An ultra-keen wicket-keeper who has returned from college to claim a spot in the side with his energetic encouragement of other players in the field and ability to claim spectacular catches at vital times. Also a more than useful rugby player with Tenby United. AKA Griff
Tom Scourfield       Aged 15
Student

Another in the long line of talent on the Carew conveyor belt, and another of the club’s Welsh internationals who has played at under 15 level for his country this season. Very accomplished with the gloves for one so young and confident in his batting ability as a bonus. Played well in the semi-final and eager for a first final, if selected. AKA Skerks
Others in contention for the final are:

Gareth Lewis
A classy left-handed batsman who joined Carew this season after a number of years out of the game – and sure to do well there because he can play shots to all parts of the ground.

Tom Richards
Joined Carew this season and capable of scoring big runs on his day, but still needs to find a little more consistency to claim a regular place in the team.

Rob Scourfield
A front-line bowler and very good lower middle order batsman who would have been a certainty to play but just recovering from injury.

Haverfordwest Pen Pictures

Huw Scriven (Capt)       Age 36
Refinery Operator

Still rightly regarded as the best wicket-keeper in Pembrokeshire and another county regular over a number of years. He loves nothing better in cricket than taking a stumping or three but is also a useful batsman who can score late runs quickly – and this will be his first final as captain in his second year in the role – having already played in eight previous finals. Also known as Scriv
Karl Rhead       Aged 36
Refinery Operator

A key player in the side who opens the batting in limited over matches and is a very strong striker of the ball so that opposing attacks are put under pressure. He is also a very good fielder and excellent reader of the game who won’t be afraid to let his skipper know what he thinks! AKA Reggie
Simon Holliday       Aged 36
Doctor

Joined the club this season after previously playing for St Fagans and for his university in London. Has a top score of 243 for a previous club in Nottingham and has already amassed heaps of runs for The Town this season, including two unbeaten centuries – and he can also bowl left-arm spin as a bonus. AKA Doc
Phil Kirkby       Aged 32
Electrical Contractor

A big-hearted all-rounder who can swing a match with his medium pacers or big hitting exploits, as he proved with two very big six-hits in the semi-final. A great club man who is making his eighth final appearance – and a county regular over many years. AKA Kirks or Razor Ruddock
Dai Davies       Aged 25
Railwayman

Dai is playing in his fourth final and is sure to feature because he bats in the top five and bowls regularly. One of the characters of the team, he was a Welsh junior international as a leg-spinner but now bowls seam-up – a deceptively big hitter and very useful in the outfield. AKA Dapper
Dan Field       Aged 27
Sports Development Officer

Another who can accumulate runs very quickly because he can hit the ball many a mile and take bowlers apart. A very good all-round sportsman who was a very talented rugby player in his younger days. AKA Fieldie
Adam James       Aged 19
Labourer

The youngster of the team but heavily involved because he usually opens the bowling with his pace stuff and took 4 for 15 in the semi-final. He is also called in when quick runs are needed and certainly one of the longest hitters of a cricket ball in the county and strong in the field, this will be his first final. AKA Jamer
Nick Dyer       Aged 40
Head teacher

The team’s ‘thinker’ as a top former captain of the club and Scottish international spin bowler who played in the World Cup before guiding Haverfordwest to honours. A classy spin bowler and strong lower-middle order batsman he has made a welcome return to cup cricket this campaign and is looking forward to his second final. AKA Frodo
Clive Tucker       Aged 38
Parts Manager

Another of the old heads in the team whose off-spin has earned him regular county selection and wickets aplenty from his canny slow stuff. Is no mug with the bat either in an emergency but not called upon too often in this line-up! AKA Tucks or Bibban
Jonathan Strawbridge       Aged 20
Lifeguard

Looked assured of a place in the final during his first season at the club but suffered a broken hand which might mean he could miss the big day if the plaster isn’t off soon enough. Has looked in good nick of late and very useful as a fielder in the deep, as a bonus. AKA Strawbs or Baywatch
Josh Wilment       Aged 19
Builder

Another of the younger breed beginning to push its way through and a very useful bowler who can swing the ball a lot, especially in the opening stages of an innings. Just needs to gain a little in self-confidence and he will be a great asset for Haverfordwest for years to come. AKA Tania
Avron Roulston       Aged 31
Sports Centre Worker

The ‘quiet man’ of the team, this South African pace man has worked hard at his fitness and started the season with a seven-wicket haul. Says that he can also bat but has yet to provide proof of this fact – but a great character to have in the club. AKA Springbok
Chris Phillips       Aged 20
Trainee Accountant

A great club man who can bowl pace or spin, whilst being one of the better fielders at Haverfordwest. He is likely to make the 12th man spot and serve his club well on the day, as he has done on previous occasions. AKA Side Show
Others in contention for the final are:

Ben Field
A talented all-round sportsman who would be an automatic choice as a classy batsman and good fielder but is suffering from a groin injury – but could still come into contention.

Danny Potter
A free-scoring opening batsman who is getting married on the very day – but would certainly feature if the final was rained off!

Steve Phillips
Has played in many finals as a key all-rounder and could come into late contention because he still has so much to offer, despite recently playing for the second team.

The Umpires . . .

Rob Bellerby (Neyland)
Rob Bellerby was a very useful sporting all-rounder in his younger days at Neyland, playing for both the rugby and cricket teams for many years. Since taking up umpiring he has earned the reputation of being a very down to earth and knowledgeable match official, who has a rapport with players – and fully deserves his first Bowl final.
Huw Davies (Whitland)
Huw played much of his cricket at St Clears and once took ten wickets in a match against Stackpole with his canny off-spin. He has been a great help to Whitland as an administrator and also earned his reputation as a practical umpire who has built up a mutual respect with players – and again fully merits a first appearance at the Bowl Final.

The Scorers . . .

Mike Scourfield (Carew)
Mike not only acts as the regular first team scorer at Carew but doubles up as first team coach so he will be involved both before and during the final. Uses a lap-top to keep score as one of the newer breed of scorers in the county- Mike is also a football referee and has built up a good rapport with players in Pembrokeshire football.
Jayne Cole (Haverfordwest)
For Jayne this will be her 13th appearance as scorer in a Bowl Final for Haverfordwest and what makes it all the more remarkable is the fact that she travels to and from matches from her home in Briton Ferry! One of the most respected scorers in the county – her scorebook really is a work of art!
