Lyndon’s back from Oz to cheer Tish on
When St Ishmaels AFC beat their counterparts from Johnston at the Second Division Cup Final, held at the Bridge Meadow Stadium in Haverfordwest, no-one was more delighted than Lyndon Howells, because he played for a number of years as a very good centre half with Tish before moving to Hobart, in Tasmania, the island state of Australia.
That move to Australia was 28 years ago and he was at the cup final with old Tish team-mates Billy Howlin, Robert Cockburn and Mark Davies, where he not only saw Marc Devonald grab the winning goal for Tish in extra time but relived memories of his former playing days where his colleagues included the late Tommy Wood, who also played at centre half and gave Lyndon loads of good advice which stood him in good stead. Keith Pawlett was in goal then and other players included the trio above, who were all characters in their own right.
Tish born and bred
He is Tish born and bred and his brother Jeremy was also a very good goalkeeper for the village team for many years. Lyndon played for Tish as a strong defender who was very good in aerial duels until he was 25 but in 1982 he made the decision to emigrate, and loves Hobart, where he has worked as a self-employed electrician. He and his wife Sue have a daughter, Claire, who is 24 and son Thomas (22), who has played football like dad but is considering whether he should take up Aussie Rules Football for a change.
Ask Lyndon and he would tell you that it is one of the few places in Australia which has four distinct seasons – and although there are some of the snakes and spiders associated with Oz it has been a great place to live.
Sport aplenty in Australia
As well as following the top British football with interest he also supports his home team of South Hobart, who play in the state premier league, and loves Aussie Rules football and Australian rugby. But perhaps best of all are the cricket one-day internationals which now take place in Tasmania – and Lyndon certainly enjoys himself there, especially if England are the visitors!
He laughingly says that he enjoyed playing cricket in Tish alongside Alan Jenkins and filled in where needed in terms of batting and bowling.
