Narberth RFC
Presentation Evening
The largest gathering of members and supporters for some time enjoyed the 2010 Annual Dinner & Presentations evening at the Nantyffin, Llandissilio last Saturday, no doubt attracted by Justin Marshall’s attendance as main speaker. Compeer for the evening was Athletic Team Coach Mathew Davies who told the gathering that Marshall had played 81 Internationals, had been first capped in 1995, captained New Zealand on Great Britain Tour in 1997, and scored more tries than any other All Black scrum half (24). His last games were against the British & Irish Lions on their 2005 Tour. Marshall then joined Leeds in Guinness Premiership in 2005, moving to the Ospreys for two seasons, then to Montpelier in France and this season with Saracens in Guinness Premiership. His final game in the UK was in the Guinness Premier Final for the Saracens v Leicester game.
Chairman John speaks up
The first speaker, club chairman John Owen, thanked Sioned Gibby for being the main organizer of the evening, and Sponsors G D Harries and Young Brothers , in particular Mansel Young. He thanked Bill Ridge for match day sponsorship, the support of the Management Committee, the hard working Rugby Committee, the Social Committee. Also, the Supporters Club who had raised £5,000 for the Club during the season. the staff at the Club, in particular Steward Anne Lonsdale and supporters, including the Templeton contingent.
Coach’s review
Next up was Head Coach Jonathon Dodd with a review of the past season. He summarized it as a mixed season by recent standards. The 1sts lost 5 out of the first six games, with numerous injuries playing a major part, good performances were achieved against Whitland away and Pontypool in the Cup. However, it was a very average season by Narberth standards. Four players were consistent throughout the season, namely Gareth Bateman, Adrian Killa, Alex Jenkins and Justin Hughes, who received the Player of the Year award. Jon Dodd ended his review with acknowledgements for the excellent work with the Youth by Jon Chinn and Bobby Simons and to Mathew Davies and John Hodgeon for their efforts during a difficult season for the Athletic. He thanked the support team for their commitment and hard work and the members of the Rugby Committee.
Youth team have their say
Next to speak was Youth coach Jon Chinn who identified his aim as wanting the Youth to enjoy the challenge and continue their development so that when they move up to senior rugby they would succeed. He appealed for more support from within the Club and in the surrounding district to help the youngsters. He was most appreciative of the support from officials, club staff, like Development Coach Kenny Davies, Kevin Smith (First Aid) and Team Manager Joan Thomas.
Clive provides a highlight
One of the highlights of the evening was Coach Clive James’s appreciation of the successful Under 16’s team who won their Junior Final recently at Neyland. During the year, five players played for the Scarlets, Will Lewis, Gareth Owen, Mathew Richards and two who were capped by Wales, namely Connor Lloyd and Sion Bennett. Sion captained the Scarlets all season and captained the Wales Under 16’s in their games. Their Welsh caps were presented to them by Justin Marshall to huge applause.
This was followed with an announcement by Vice Chairman Dorian Phillips that the Management Committee had passed a resolution to be placed before the AGM to recommend that John Owen be made a Life Member of Narberth RFC. He thanked Mark Roberts, a local entrepreneur for bringing Justin Marshall to the area for the Narberth RFC Annual Dinner.
Great guest of honour
Justin Marshall indicated how the evening had taken him back in time to his grass roots and how important to the professional players was grass root rugby, which they would forget at their peril. He felt it was awesome to spend the evening amongst Narberth RFC and felt privileged to be able to return to Wales. It is now five years since he retired from the All Blacks and the time had been well spent and he could not have wished for better experiences. Referring to his first time as an All Black, he used another All Black Zinzan Brooke as an example of how young players learn so much from experienced, older players and that the younger players should benefit as they move forward through the teams and years.
Question and answer session
There followed a question and answer session and when asked who was the toughest scrum half that he played against he referred to the South African Joost van der Westhuizin and Rob Howley but the player who stood out for consistency over 127 caps was Aussie George Gregan. Obviously he was asked about Mike Phillips, whom he holds in high regard and gave an honest resume of his occasion when they played against each other at the Liberty Stadium. He was asked whether he had any regrets leaving New Zealand and not obtaining more caps but he felt coming away to Europe was good and he would not have missed for one moment He ended by again by thanking the Club for inviting him to a memorable evening and Justin then spent time meeting personally some of those present, signing autographs and eventually joining the revelers on the dance floor.

LNG Pembrokeshire Youth Cup Final:
Young Borderers battle to big win
Aberystwyth 15 points - Whitland 29 points

Aberaeron.
Whitland’s talented Youth team won the 2010 LNG-sponsored Pembrokeshire Youth Cup Final as they built up a big first-half lead over Aberystwyth and resisted a strong comeback by the well-drilled outfit from Mid Wales to seal yet another success for the Borderers.
Played near the sea at Aberaeron, the wind was always going to be a key factor but both teams deserve every credit for playing some good rugby to grace the final in what was an entertaining and absorbing clash.
Centre Dafydd Williams opened the scoring in the tenth minute after a good run from No 8 Andrew Hawkins and within a few minutes outside Jonathan Thomas crossed over in the corner to double the Borderers’ lead. The rest of the half belonged to Aberystwyth as their pack took the game to Whitland and strong runs from No 8 Rhys Jones, prop Andy Reynolds, plus seconds rows Gethin and Eifion Hughes, took play deep into the Whitland 22 but the final pass always went to floor or just missed its target.
Vital points before and after half time
In the final moments of the half, with Aberystwyth again pressing, it was Whitland centre Dafydd Williams who picked a long pass out of the air to sprint 80 metres to score under the post and full back James Stephenson added the extra points to give the Borderers a 17-0 interval lead.
Aberystwyth looked a different team in the second half, a lot sharper in every aspect of the game but once again Whitland broke away after more confusion in the Aberystwyth midfield and when the ball reached winger Nico Setaro he had the easiest of tasks to finish the move off in the corner. He got up brushed himself down and kicked the difficult conversion to make the score 24 points to nil and that was that, you might think.
Aber fight back
The game was by now much more open and Aberystwyth open side flanker Dan Binks was becoming a big influence on the game and with the introduction of Gareth Isaac on the wing, Aber made an immediate impression by Isaac squeezing in for a try in the corner.
From the restart, Chris Randall finished off a number of forward drives by crashing over in the same spot as Isaac again but Aaron Lewis was off-target with the extras. The game was now in its last few minutes and when prop Andy Reynolds scored Aberystwyth’s third try there was just a small hope that an amazing comeback was still on.
Borderers bounce back
After giving everything they had, it was Whitland who had the last word on the score sheet when outside half Jonathan Thomas made it over to claim a personal brace of tries.
Moments later Thomas found his way into the referee’s book for killing the ball and he was then joined in the sin bin by winger Setaro for a deliberate knock on a minute later, but it was Whitland’s fifth Youth Cup success in six years and very well deserved, but Aberystwyth had played a full part in a cracking final where Dafydd Williams of Whitland picked up the LNG Man of the Match for his support play, covering and try-scoring from his centre berth.

Whitland 2nds won the 2009/10 Junior Union Cup Final as they beat off a very strong challenge from Crymych 2nds in a match that was high on commitment and effort but with a lot of errors and taking of wrong options as the game was played at 100mph.
Crymych had the advantage of the deceptively strong breeze in the first period and must have wondered at half time how they could be trailing by 14-6 at the break after enjoying 80% of the territorial advantage but having just two penalties from outside half Aled Morgan to show for it as Wyn Jenkins, Matthew Hill and Andrew Morris had all shown nice touches but Whitland had defended well via Matthew Owens, Rhydian Davies, Mitchell Rees and Gareth Morris.
Something out of nothing
Aled Morgan also hit the post with a third penalty attempt but Whitland showed their ability to create something out of nothing when a good run by Anthony James allowed co-centre Matthew Howells to score a try at the posts immediately after Morgan had given Crymych the lead, with full back Wayne Morris adding the conversion.
The Borderers claimed their second score right on half time, again after Morgan had slotted his second successful three-pointer, but this time it was the work-rate of Dai Ebsworth, skipper Martin Nicholas, Shane Webster, Matthew Owens and especially Celt Thomas which set up the chance for No 10 Morgan to create the space and put Howells in for his second try, which Morris converted.
Borderers assume control
It was a terrific boost for the Borderers and they assumed control after the oranges as their pack secured possession and Shane Morgan pinned Crymych back with some big kicks to the corners. They had a golden chance when skipper Nicholas and Mitchell Rees went close but finally broke the deadlock when replacement No 8 Mike Jones, home from university, ploughed over the line for an unconverted try.
Whitland had yellow cards for winger Matthew Owens and prop Lee Williams but the game was played in a competitive but fair manner as Whitland continued to be on top but Crymych never gave an inch. But the pressure finally told on the Preseli Men, however, when a clearance attempt was charged down by Shame Morgan and second row Geraint Rees was up in a flash to secure the touch-down.
Consolation score
Crymych finally grabbed the try they deserved when quick hands allowed flanker Rhys Davies to cross in the right corner but it was appropriate that Shane Morgan should have the final word for Whitland with a snap dropped goal as reward for his controlling play in the second half.
Whitland skipper Martin Nicholas received the trophy from Eifion Evans, the chairman of the Pembroke and District Junior Union, who also presented trophies to both teams, replacements and match officials, with thanks given to Narberth RFC for the use of their superb facilities, and to sponsors Molson Coors for their continued support.

Youth Cup Semi-Final:
Young Borderers back for fourth successive final
Haverfordwest Youth 7 points - Whitland Youth 18 points
Whitland Youth have reached the final of the Pembrokeshire Youth Cup for the fourth year on the trot after an 18 points to 7 victory over Haverfordwest Youth as reward for their excellent all-round performance.
The game was played between two strong sides but Whitland held the edge in most areas and deserved the win but the strong travelling Borderers’ support had to wait till the last few minutes before they could finally relax.
Whitland took the lead in the 25 minute when fullback James Stephenson kicked a penalty after Haverfordwest's Ashley Sutton had missed earlier chances. With minutes to half time the home side took the lead with a try by second row Llewellyn Jones, which Ashley Sutton converted, but Whitland's James Stephenson cut their half time lead to one point with his second penalty.
Whitland started the half strongly but Stephenson just missed with two penalties chances - but after 11 minutes, from a scrum some ten metres from the Haverfordwest's line, quick thinking by Whitland's scrum half Aled Rees, who went blind and scored an unconverted try to give Whitland the lead by 11 points to 7.
Sutton missed another penalty five minutes later and with Whitland now controlling the game it was only a matter of time and with some five minutes left centre Lewis Thomas scored the killer blow, getting the touchdown, and James Stephenson converted to leave the final score 18 points to 7 to the Cup holders.

Dragon LNG Youth Cup – Quarter Final details
Aberystwyth 34 - Fishguard 5
Aberystwyth showed what a good youth side they have this season as they proved too strong for a relatively young Fishguard side, which battled hard, nonetheless.
Pembroke 15 - Narberth 16
A try in the last play of the match to steal it for Narberth after Pembroke were leading 15 - 6 with six minutes to go.
Pembroke Dock 10 - Whitland 19
A very tight game, 3-7 at half time and it took
an interception try by the young Borderers during a period of intense pressure from the Quins late in the game to secure the fixture for Whitland.
Haverfordwest 11 - Crymych 6
Another very tight game, Haverfordwest led 6-3 and the first score in the second half was a Crymych penalty under the posts with three minutes to go. That put the visitors likely to go through as the away side, but from the restart Crymych knocked on in their own half. From the scrum a series of pick & drives from the Blues’ pack led to a score out wide with a minute to go.

Seagulls soar for bonus-point win
Fishguard 33 points - St Davids 0
Fishguard retained the Seagulls Cup as they completed the double over nearest neighbours St Davids, but more importantly pouched five points, including a bonus point for scoring at least four tries.
The Seagulls were always in control as Huw Evans called the shots from his outside half berth, as well as kicking three penalties into the teeth of the wind, during a first period where St Davids had a few half chances as Ianto Davies and Gethin Bateman caught the eye up front for their ball-winning alongside Eddie Bolger and Jake Pratt, whilst skipper Fraser Watson and scrum half Brian Phillips were ever-ready to move the ball to try and create space – but they were always on the back foot as Gwilym Evans, Torau Ilaisa, Mark George and especially Graham Davies charged back at them so that Fishguard were 9-0 up at the break and with second use of the elements on The Moor.
First try scored by veteran No 8
Graham Davies claimed the game’s first try soon after half time as the No 8 ploughed over on the right and Huw Evans whipped over the conversion before Torau Ilaisa added a second, this time unconverted. Referee Martin Williams didn’t see that an Evans penalty had rolled over the dead ball line and awarded a drop out 22 to the Saints, rather than a scrum way back in Fishguard territory. From the resulting set-piece the Seagulls set up a period of pressure from which Ilaisa plunged over in the corner.
The veteran duo of Davies and Evans then conspired to put full back Rhodri Thomas in for an easy try which Evans converted – and flanker Mark George crashed through for the vital fourth try which set the seal on a good day for the Seagulls and left the Saints with nothing to show for a lot of hard work!

Wasps overwhelmed at Pill Parks
Llangwm 0 - Aberaeron 79 points
Llangwm’s disappointing season continued at Pill Parks as they were overwhelmed by an Aberaeron side eager to run the ball at every opportunity and scoring 13 tries as the Wasps failed to register a single point.
Aled Morgan still caught the eye for Llangwm as he played hooker in the first half, when the visitors built up a 43-0 lead, and flanker afterwards, tackling superbly as Luke, Andrew and Johnny Brock also gave 100% at outside half, centre and scrum half respectively.
But this is a good Aberaeron side and skipper Tudur Jenkins led the way from his berth in the back row as he claimed a hat-trick of tries alongside hooker Gareth Flynn. Centre Tom Taylor and outside half Llyr Davies contributed two tries each whilst centre Bleddyn Henton, prop Owain Wozencroft and winger Rhodri Thomas also got their names on the scoresheet. Full back Iestyn Thomas rounded off the scoring with six conversions to complete a huge win for the Mid Wales’ side, leaving the Llangwm faithful with their heaviest home defeat of a difficult campaign.

Friday evening rugby:
Otters’ match called off late
There was disappointment for Narberth fans at the Lewis Lloyd Ground on Friday evening as their floodlit rearranged league match against Carmarthen Athletic was called off just prior to the scheduled start when the referee decided that the pitch was unsuitable for play and so this is another previously postponed match that will have to be rearranged again before the end of the season.
Cocklemen claim victory over Crymych
Penclawdd 15 points - Crymych 11 points
Crymych battled hard against Penclawdd but although they scored the game’s only try they were unable to complete the double over the Cocklemen, whom they had already beaten at home by 15-8.
Crymych never shirked a tackle against a big opposing pack as the front row of John Davies, Owain Richards and Rob Davies held their own in the scrums whilst the back row of Tomos Jones, Richard Sharpe-Williams and Simon James were always looking for quality ball in the battle on the ground so that half backs Rhodri and Gareth Davies could exert an influence.
The Cocklemen took the lead with a penalty from outside half Jamie Moore but Gareth Davies hauled the Preseli Men level with a well-struck penalty and repeated the three-pointer before the interval to ease them 6-3 ahead at the oranges.
Crymych had Carwyn Jones playing in the centre on permit from Whitland and he defended well alongside player/coach Elgan Vittle and Dyfan Dafydd but although they stopped Penclawdd from scoring tries the home side added four further penalties by Moore to put them 15-6 in front with ten minutes to go.
But the Preseli Men bounced back late on with some good handling rounded off by winger Rhodri Thomas with a corner try which went unconverted – but, try as they might, the visitors were unable to add any further points, although they did have the consolation of a deserved bonus point.
Crymych:
Dyfan Dafydd; Nick Bevan; Carwyn Jones; Elgan Vittle; Andrew Thomas; Gareth Davies; Rhodri Davies; Rob Davies; Owain Richards; John Davies; Mark Oakman; Andrew Phillips; Richard Sharpe-Williams; Tomos Jones; Simon James. Replacements: Martin Edwards; Rhys Richards; Trystan Griffiths.

Seasiders still in with promotion chance
Tenby United 43 points Pembroke 0
Tenby United’s relentless march up the section table continued unabated as they easily accounted for Pembroke in a local derby where they led by nine points at half time but accelerated afterwards to grab five tries and a vital bonus point.
The Scarlets fought hard in that first half and limited the Tenby points machine to just three penalties by fly half Tom Lewis, who also controlled things with his kicking out of hand as he linked well with scrum half Richard Rossiter.
But with Harry Bolton, Sam Smith and Timoci Kaumaitotoya catching the eye in the Seasiders’ back row the pressure fell on the Pembroke defence more and more so that Kaumaitotoya grabbed a try brace and other tries came from skipper Bolton, winger Dan Colley and full back Matthew Shepperd, who was drafted in late after Toby Smith injured himself in the pre-match warm up.
Gavin Brace also had a strong game in the centre whilst Tom Lewis added a further nine points after the interval to complete another good day for the powerful No 10 as Tenby United are really applying pressure to the teams above them in the table with this late charge for glory.

Junior Union Cup Replay
Borderers scrape home against gritty Seasiders
Whitland 2nds 22 points - Tenby United 21 points
Tenby United’s tearaway flanker Harry Bolton grabbed three second half tries in an entertaining Junior Union Cup replay but still finished on the losing side as the Borderers held on to win by a single point.
The teams had shared 24 points in their previous encounter at Heywood Lane but it seemed that the Borderers were on their way to a comfortable success in this replay as they led 15-0 at the interval. Powerful hooker Trystan Griffiths opened their account with a try which Wayne Morris converted to go with a penalty – and Shane Morgan added their second try, this time unconverted, from a nicely-conceived move.
But whatever the Tenby coach said at half time it certainly galvanised his side because first- team skipper Harry Bolton ploughed through for a try which experienced kicker Neil Powling converted.
The same combination added a further seven points for the Seasiders to set the alarms ringing in the home camp, who increased their advantage when Shane Morgan cut through for his second try after good work by half back partner Johnny Morgan, making a welcome return from injury, and Darren Rees added the extra points.
It was to Tenby’s credit that they refused to surrender, though, and with veterans Gethin Williams and Mike Evans also involved there was a third Bolton try, again converted by Powling from the last kick of an enjoyable and hard-fought contest.

But it was anything other than a vintage performance by the Otters as they trailed 15-8 with only 13 minutes left against a side which played with far more spirit and craft than their two wins from 12 league games would suggest. But then Phillips popped up in the right place at the right time to claim his try brace, with a cracking solo try from full back Roger Davies sandwiched neatly in between.
Over fussy refereeing
To be fair to the Otters, their cause wasn’t helped by an over-fussy referee in Elwyn Marfell-Jones, who barked orders at players all match, seemed to forget that lineout throws had to be straight and recalled the home side twice in the final stages for forward passes which only he seemed to spot. He also yellow-carded five players for technical offences but simply awarded a penalty to the Otters for the most blatant body check which halted a promising move.
Cwmllynfell had the better of the first quarter and took the lead after 16 minutes when winger Andrew Luther joined a lineout catch and drive orchestrated by veteran No 8 Jim Morgan to claim the touchdown.
Craig Jones responded for Narberth with a 28
th
minute penalty but the outside half had an off-day with the boot as he missed a second attempt before a powerful run by centre John Leyshon set up the chance for winger Nick Jones to cross for an unconverted corner try.
Cwmllynfell regained the lead when centre Paul Davies slotted a good 40 metre penalty but Jones was again off target for Narberth – and then the visitors added a try by flanker Daniel Jones.
Wake up call
It sounded a wake-up call for the Otters as they brought on Chris Scarf, Dan Smith and Andrew Davies, who all made an impact as Alex Jenkins, who had a very good game, created the initial space for Steffan Phillips to crash over in the right corner, although Jones missed the difficult chance to level matters with the conversion.
The Otters desperately needed a spark of inspiration and found it when Roger Davies fielded a kick ahead by Cwmllynfell and sped up the touchline in front of the stand, chipped over the bemused cover and regathered to score a try which he also converted.
Cwmllynfell tried to play ‘catch up rugby’ near their own posts in the closing moments but paid the price when a pass went to ground over their own line and Phillips was well placed to claim a soft second try, which Roger Davies converted to set the seal on a Narberth win.
Narberth:
Roger Davies; Nick Jones; Richard Davies (Capt); John Leyshon; Adam Thomas; Craig Jones; Adrian Killa; Sean Lloyd; Aled Harries; Justin Hughes; Alex Jenkins; Jason Jennings; Gareth Bateman; Simon Griffiths; Steffan Phillips. Mixed day of international fortunes for our Welsh rugby stars playing against France in Cardiff
It was a mixed day of fortunes for local rugby stars playing for Wales against France on Friday.
In the afternoon two of Pembrokeshire’s homegrown products Simon Gardiner (Haverfordwest) and Scott Williams (Whitland) featured in Wales Under 20's emphatic 43-8 victory over the French at the Arms Park.
Centre Williams grabbed one of Wales’ six tries, taking a scoring pass from man of the match Kristian Phillips (Ospreys’ winger scored a superb hat-trick) to dive over in the left corner. Gardiner was solid in the front row playing at tight head. After losing the opener against England Phil Davies’ Welsh troops have followed up with victories over Scotland and now France.

No fairytale end for heartbroken Wales
On Friday night Wales lost 20-26 against RBS Six Nations hot favourites France at the Millennium Stadium.
Warren Gatland’s side trailed by 20 points at the interval and gifted two interception tries to the visitors, incredibly for the third successive international Wales mounted a terrific fightback in the second half - but come the final whistle lost by six points.
Second row Deiniol Jones (Cardigan) sadly left the field after only 25 minutes with a rib injury. Jonathan Thomas (Pembroke) played the whole game; the back row forward covered a lot a lot of ground, putting in some big tackles, taking some clean lineout takes. Tom Shanklin (Tenby) and Mike Phillips (Whitland) both remained on the bench, as Wales fell agonisingly short with another tremendous comeback. The game's final highlight saw winger Shane Williams dance his way into the record books on his 33rd birthday, scoring his 19th championship try in the dying seconds.

Local rugby stars shine for Wales in breathtaking victories over Scotland in Cardiff
Pembrokeshireport.co.uk was over the moon to watch on the television some of Pembrokeshire’s best rugby talent shine for Wales at the weekend.
Firstly, Haverfordwest bred prop Simon Gardiner crashed over for a try in Wales Under 20s 20-12 victory over Scotland at Cardiff Arms Park on Friday (February 12
th
) evening.
Simon’s Scarlet and Wales team-mate Scott Williams (Whitland) made a brilliant 55-metre burst to the try line, but the TMO picked-up that the classy centre had put a foot in touch and the score was disallowed.
After a heavy defeat against England, Phil Davies’ Welsh side showed terrific character to bounce back to winning ways, and next up they face France on Friday (February 26
th
) with kick-off at the Arms Park scheduled for 3.30pm.
The Welsh senior side got out of jail on Saturday. Trailing 24-14 with just ten minutes to go Wales scored 17 unanswered points to snatch a dramatic 31-24 victory over shell-shocked Scotland at the Millennium Stadium.
Jonathan Thomas had a superb game in the second row, taking some crucial lineout possession, and carried over the gain line at every opportunity. Thomas told Pembrokeshiresport.co.uk that he couldn’t believe that Wales won when defeat was definitely staring them in the face. Thomas moved to the flank (now Andy Powell has been dropped from squad) for the last quarter, and could possibly play in his favoured position against France in the next RBS Six Nations clash at the Millennium Stadium on Friday (February 26
th
) night.

Division Four (West):
Seasiders too strong for Mariners
Milford Haven 13 points - Tenby United 22 points
Tenby United confirmed their right to be considered now as one of the best teams in the section as they journeyed to Milford Haven for this floodlit Friday night league match and came away with a deserved win.
The Seasiders proved too strong and street-wise for the Mariners in the forward exchanges as Richard Rossiter made a rare appearance at scrum half and played like an extra flanker alongside the already-powerful unit of Timoci Kaumahotoya, Sam Smith and skipper Harry Bolton. Scott Payne, Nicky Guymer and Lee Tucker are a highly experienced unit and so Tenby had good quality possession, especially in the second period, where they fought back from a 10-5 interval deficit to take control.
Milford coach Alan McClelland was as honest in his assessment as ever and admitted that his pack came out second best in the close exchanges.
“Tonight’s match showed that we still have some way to go and we were beaten by the better side on the night,” he said, “Tenby will prove hard to beat by the other sides in contention as well.”
Balanced first half
Leigh Broome returned at full kick to kick Milford into an early three-point lead but quick hands from Toby Smith, Gavin Brace and Patrick Drayawa put winger Nemeni Ratu in for an unconverted Tenby try.
Back came the Mariners with a good try from Tom Bullivant after his side gained a foothold in the bottom corner before Tom Arnold and Jim Farr spread play wide for the powerful winger to score in the other corner, with Broome doing well to convert.
Broome also landed a second half penalty for Milford but with Gareth Edwards and Johnny Lane doing well for the Seasiders in the ball-winning stakes it was Tenby who added further tries from winger George Evans, No 8 Sam Smith and full back Dai Merrick to earn their side a bonus point.
Toby Smith notched one conversion as the Seasiders were good value for victory, leaving Milford Haven to reflect on their third defeat of the season – and real pressure on them to retain their second spot by Pontarddulais and Cefneithin.
Milford Haven:
Lee Broome: Tom Bullivant; Dean Matthews; Ian Rusinek; Craig Thomas: Jim Farr; Tom Arnold: Mike Cockburn; Chris Spillane; James Passmore: Gareth Fawcett; Aidan Laxton: Anthony Picton; Ben Johnson; Mark Wonnacott. Replacements: Rhys Holmes; Mark Russell; Scott Walters; Gareth Bevan.
Tenby United:
Dai Merrick: George Evans; Gavin Brace; Patrick Drayawa; Nemeni Ratu: Toby Smith; Richard Rossiter: Scott Payne; Nicky Guymer; Lee Tucker: Johnny Lane; Gareth Edwards: Timoci Kaumahotoya; Harry Bolton; Sam Smith. Replacements: Simon Stanford; Terence John; Rob Clarke; Rob James; Gareth Knox.

D.C Thomas Cup:
Under 11s maintain winning streak
Dinefwr Schools under 11s – 10 points
Pembrokeshire Schools under 11s – 29 points
Pembrokeshire’s talented under 11 rugby players made the long trip to Llandybie to take on their counterparts from Dinefwr Schools in a crunch fixture, and came away with a convincing win to maintain their winning streak.
Dinefwr put pressure on from the kick off and set up camp in the Pembs 22, so that only stout defence keep them at bay until a timely interception from full back Osian Edwards saw him sprint the length of the field for the first score, which Danny Wainwright converted.
Pembs moved the ball at every opportunity and applied real pressure in the opposition 22, and after several forward drives scrum half Oli Lewis was able to grab a second score from short range, which Wainwright also converted.
This gave the youngsters the confidence to move the ball at every opportunity and wingers Ryan Conbeer and Geraint Powell both claimed scores before half time. Pembs used the bench to good effect and made changes at the interval and with fresh legs Pembs were able to get the ball wide and young Ben Evans beat the cover to score in the corner.
Despite stout defence Dinefwr were able to claim two consolation tries but it was too little, too late, as Pembs ran out worthy winners in a tough encounter.
Pembrokeshire Under 11s:
Adam Bowen, Aaron Griffiths, Osian Davies, Ryan Cole, Hywel Baker, Andrew Skone, Sion Colella, Archie Thomas, Oli Lewis (Captain), Danny Wainwright, Geraint Powell, Kieran Griffiths, Thomas Hughes, Ryan Conbeer, Osian Edwards.
Replacements:
Aaron Cookson, Morgan Rees, Ben Evans, Jack Tucker, Owen Lewis, Sion Evans, Emyr Davies.

Wales's rugby stars with local connections ready to face the Scots in Cardiff
Two rugby stars with local connections have been picked for the Wales RBS Six Nations squad to face Scotland at the Millennium Stadium this Saturday (13th February).
Jonathan Thomas and Tom Shanklin are included as Wales have made two changes from the starting line-up defeated by England at Twickenham.
In the second row Osprey Jonathan Thomas reforms his regional partnership with Alun-Wyn Jones at the expense of lock Luke Charteris. Leigh Halfpenny comes in for his Blues’ team-mate Tom James on the wing.
Tom Shanklin is recalled to the bench and is itching to add to his 65-caps tally.
Wales coach Warren Gatland said, “Jonathan brings over 50 caps of experience to the tight five and offers us some extra mobility around the field.”
This Friday (12
th
February) evening Wales Under 20 entertain Scotland Under 20 at the Cardiff Arms Park, kick-off 7.10pm.
Coach Phil Davies has kept faith with the team that lost heavily last week against England. Both Scott Williams and Simon Gardiner retain their places in the starting line-up at centre and prop, respectively.
Davies said, “We are pleased with the character of the team against England and it is important to keep continuity in selection in order to build a team performance.”

Local rugby stars selected for Wales’ 35-man Six Nations squad
Pembrokeshiresport.co.uk is exited that four players whose roots are from Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion have been picked for Wales’ 35-man Six Nations squad announced on Monday (18th January) lunchtime.
Brilliant news for Pembrokeshire rugby lovers is the fact that Blues’ lock Deiniol Jones (Ceredigion) has been recalled to train with Wales after missing the Autumn Series, but did feature in last summer’s tour to North America.
Also fit again is Ospreys’ star Jonathan Thomas (Pembroke) who retains his place after winning a 50th cap in the autumn.
Blues’ vastly experienced centre Tom Shanklin (Tenby) is also included and so to is red-hot Scarlets’ centre Jonathan Davies (Whitland).
Warren Gatland has included four uncapped players in the form of rookie wingers Kristian Phillips and Tom Prydie, both of the Ospreys, plus Blues’ scrum half Richard Rees and Saracens’ prop Rhys Gill.
Top stars Dwayne Peel and Mike Phillips (Whitland) have not been named because of injury – but Phillips is scheduled to return to action shortly and may force his way back into contention at a later date.
Gareth Cooper is probably odds-on to start at scrum half in Wales’ tough opener against England at Twickenham on Saturday, 6th February, where Gatland knows only to well his side need a good start.
Wales' 35-man Six Nations squad:
Backs:
Gareth Cooper, Leigh Halfpenny, Tom James, Richard Rees, Jamie Roberts, Tom Shanklin (all Cardiff Blues) Dan Biggar, Andrew Bishop, Lee Byrne, James Hook, Kristian Phillips, Tom Prydie, Shane Williams (all Ospreys), Jonathan Davies, Stephen Jones, Martin Roberts (all Llanelli Scarlets)

Luke leads the way for Scarlets
Luke Hansford has been chosen as this month’s top player at Pembroke RFC after a series of rousing displays in the Scarlets’ back row.
Luke is enjoying this season, having missed all last season with an injury which required surgery. Luke has been playing exceptionally well over the last number of weeks, and fully deserves his award from Hertel, who are Pembroke RFC main sponsor for 2009 /10.
Luke is a product of the Pembroke junior set up, as are the majority of the first team, and has progressed through the junior ranks, playing for the first team when he was still eligible for the youth.
Pictured is Luke Hansford receiving his Hertel player of the month cheque from coaches Ossie Boswell and Clive Rowlands.

Quins’ juniors take Parc y Scarlets by storm
Pembroke Dock Quins under10s recently travelled to Parc y Scarlets to play at half time in the Scarlets versus Edinburgh in a Magners’ League match – and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day out.
PembrokeshireSport.co.uk let coaching organiser, Stuart Lewis, tell the story!
We left the Quins at 3.30pm on Friday afternoon so that we could spend as much time as possible in the new Training Barn which is open for players, parents and camp followers for around two hours before kick-off.
An early delay but then a great time
We were considerably delayed by a lorry fire at Bancyfelin but still arrived in time to enjoy the many facilities and activities laid on in the Barn which includes a bar (lager at £2.50 per pint well received by Dwane!!), hot food (well received by Dwane!), face painting, various rugby-related competitions and a large area of Astro-turf for practicing or playing indoors. Because we and Hendy RFC were there early the Scarlets organisers invited us to play 5 a-side touch rugby against each other.
Despite the fact that our boys had not played rugby for nearly a month because of the weather, they looked extremely sharp and were far too good for Hendy, winning both the games played. The U10’s obviously set the standard for the 1st XV to follow in beating Hendy on Saturday.
Meeting the stars
After playing our 5 a side games the four teams participating at half time were joined by Scarlets players not playing in the match for photographs and autographs. The players were Mark Jones, Scarlets club captain, Iestyn Thomas, Morgan Stoddard and last but by no means least Regan King to whom Ben Gibby quipped: "My coach says I play like you ". One day, Ben, one day. All the players were great with the kids and we've come home with some great photos and all the autographs.
We were then called to provide the guard of honour for the players running on to the field and coaches and boys alike were taken aback by the size of players, not the least being our own Dominic Day. We all hope we were caught on television but we will have to wait and see the recording.
Half time show of skills
At half time we took to the field to play tag rugby against Merthyr RFC in front of 5000 plus people, wearing our brand new shorts kindly sponsored by Mr Paul Pearce, of television aerial fame. We faced Merthyr U11’s but competed really well against an older and bigger side. The standard of rugby served up by both sides was excellent and Merthyr scored a very good try by moving the ball wide and feeding a real flyer standing in the left wing position.
We worked very hard to equalise and in the last second of the game Sam James made a clean break and was clear only to be TACKLED from behind! Remember, this was Tag Rugby, an offence that, had this been a tournament, would have resulted in the award of a penalty try. The boys were very disappointed but we coaches were delighted with the performance, especially in the light of playing in front of so many people. The boys will never forget the experience.
Youngsters join parents to cheer Scarlets on
We then joined parents and friends in the North Stand to watch the second half of the Magners League match, eventually being disappointed by the Scarlets' narrow defeat.
I'm sure that everyone who made the trip had a marvellous time and Dai, Kevin and I would like to thank the parents and friends who joined us for their support for this trip and throughout the season.

Welsh Youth Cup Semi-Final:
County Youth beaten but unbowed
Pembrokeshire Youth 7 points - Bridgend & District Youth 22 points
Venue: Haverfordwest RFC
Pembrokeshire Youth played their hearts out against holders Bridgend and District in this much-postponed Welsh Youth Cup semi-final but it was the visitors who reached the final as they proved just a little too strong overall for the county youngsters.
Bridgend were already 17 points ahead at the break and it says much for the commitment of the homesters that they refused to cave in under pressure as they edged the second period, which will have pleased coaches Richard Jones, Robin Davies and Larry Spillane.
Bridgend, who draw in players from Tondu, Maesteg, Pencoed, Porthcawl and Cefn Cribbwr, amongst others, were strong up front as skipper David Bishop was joined by props Rhys Everton and Aled Thomas in the front row, with No 8 Scott Hicks and second row Matthew Hall as other key ball winners. Half backs Tom Grabham and Tom Parry kicked well and brought in powerhouse centre David Povey alongside James Olds, who gave Bridgend the lead with a try which Parry converted, as he did when flanker Lloyd Evans also crossed the line. Olds also slotted a dropped goal and Pembrokeshire’s problems continued as fly half Scott Newton sustained a bang on the head and was taken off.
Good fight back
But skipper Gethin Davies made sure that his team maintained their focus and joined Dan Gosnold and Michael Jones in a determined back row, whilst Lewis Davies, Dan Evans, Brinley Toms, Gruffydd Howells and Tom Bannister worked hard in the tight five.
They reduced the deficit in the second period as Robin Davies probed well and David O’Leary and Gavin Thomas had put in a couple of little runs - and then a high ball was beautifully caught by Ianto Griffiths, who put in a little dummy and was over at the posts for co-centre Dyfan Dafydd to add the extra points.
Bridgend had the final word when full back Mike Powell sliced through for a corner try but Pembrokeshire Youth could certainly hold their heads high after this performance because everyone involved gave 100% to the cause.
Pembrokeshire Youth:
Adam Phillips; David O’Leary (both Haverfordwest); Ianto Griffiths; Dyfan Dafydd; Gavin Thomas (all Crymych): Scott Newton (Whitland); Robin Davies (Crymych): Lewis Davies (Pembroke); Dan Evans; Brinley Toms (both Whitland): Gryffudd Howells (Crymych); Tom Bannister (Narberth): Dan Gosnold (Pembroke); Gethin Davies (Cardigan – Capt); Michael Jones (Whitland).

County Schools win well away
Llanelli Schools under 11s 10 points - Pembrokeshire Schools under 11s 27 points
Pembrokeshire under 11s travelled to take on the mighty Llanelli schools under 11s at Trimsaran and came away with a superb win as both forwards and backs played well to create such a brilliant result.
After all the rain it was nice to finally get out on the pitch and from the kick off Pembrokeshire were quickly into their stride and put the Llanelli defence under pressure and force the home side into a series of errors, which gave Pembrokeshire a foot hold in opposition territory.
Bright start for the county
Pembs’ backs looked to put the ball wide, via skipper Oli Lewis and half back partner Danny Wainwright, at every opportunity and it was not long before winger Ryan Conbeer was able to round the defence to score the opener.
From the kick off the Pembs forwards made the hard yards before the half backs put the ball wide again for Conbeer to use his pace well and claim his second try.
Pembs again fielded the restart and looked to take the game back to Llanelli. Despite stout defence from the home side the Pembs backs were able to put right winger Geraint Powell into space and he had the speed and determination to finish the move off in the corner.
This stung Llanelli into action and they took full advantage of a Pembs’ mistake by releasing their outside centre into space and he squeezed in at the corner.
This gave the Llanelli side confidence and they started to move the ball until a timely interception by full back Osian Edwards, who sprinted 50 metres to score under the posts for an opportunist try which Danny Wainwright converted.
Half time changes
Half time gave the opportunity for the Pembs’ coaches to use their replacements and try some new combinations but seemed to affect the flow of the game and a lack of match practice and fitness saw the Pembs’ forwards struggle to compete up front.
From one piece of possession, Pembs were able to stretch the Llanelli defence one way and then quickly move the ball back the other for Osian Edwards to out strip the cover to score his second try in the corner.
With a steady late flow of possession Llanelli pressed but good tackling kept them at bay until eventually the pressure proved too much and Llanelli powered their way over from short range for a consolation try which drew a breathtaking match to a close.
Pembrokeshire Team: Osian Edwards; Ryan Conbeer; Thomas Hughes; Sion Evans; Geraint Powell: Danny Wainwright; Oli Lewis (Capt): Archie Thomas; Sion Colella: Andrew Skone: Hywel Baker; Emyr Davies: Adam Bowen; Aaron Griffiths; Osian Davies. Replacements: Aaron Cookson; Ryan Cole; Kieran Griffiths; Owen Lewis.
A massive well done to all the boys because this was a big scalp well taken! Have a good Christmas and we shall see you in the New Year. Huge thanks too, to Huw Baker, who stepped in to coach the development side and travelled all the way to Llanelli with NO sleep, having worked the night before.

Rhodri to win Oxford Blue
Rhodri James, the Narberth outside half who is now studying at Oxford University, has been selected as a replacement for the Varsity game at Twickenham this Thursday afternoon.
Rhodri is a product of Narberth Youth team, and also played for Pembrokeshire County and District Youth Teams - touring to Dubai with the County in 2005. At that time he was also a member of the Llanelli Scarlets’ Youth Academy.
He made his debut for Narberth First Team against Cardiff at the Arms Park in their Konica Minolta Welsh Cup tie in 2006 and also played several league games for the Club before an injury kept him out of the game for quite a lengthy period.
In fact during his first year at University he was advised not to play rugby due to the injury, and so he took up rowing and excelled at that sport. The Oxford Rugby Squad is coached by Mr Brian Ashton - the ex England coach, and Rhodri is delighted to be in the squad and hopes to be given an opportunity during the course of the game, but it will be a memorable occasion for him anyway.
His parents live in Llanfallteg and his father Gordon is the well known Environmentalist. The game is live on Sky Sports and PembrokeshireSport.co.uk wishes Rhodri every success.

JT comes off the bench to win coveted 50th Wales Cap
There were plenty of cheers round rugby club’s in the county when Jonathan Thomas came on as a replacement for second row Luke Charteris to win a coveted 50th Cap for Wales against Australia.
The popular Wales and Ospreys’ star has had a torrid time over the past year with injury. Twice he’s had operations to sort out a troublesome groin problem. He finally got his opportunity to play the last half hour in Wales’ dismal 12-33 final autumn test defeat against Australia at the Millennium Stadium.
Jonathan told Pembrokeshiresport.co.uk that he was bitterly disappointed that Wales played so poorly, and the defeat hurt the boys, but in the after match function he was thrilled to receive his Welsh cap from WRU President Dennis Gethin in front of his proud family and girlfriend.
He now goes back to the Ospreys and is really looking forward to playing and hopefully featuring well. If everything goes to plan he wants to be included in Warren Gatland’s Wales 2010 RBS Six Nations squad.
Well done JT – your county, club and country are all extremely proud of your terrific rugby achievements. Keep up the good work!

Pembrokeshire Knock Out Cup:
Seagulls push Aber all the way
Fishguard and Goodwick 16 points - Aberystwyth 19 points
Aberystwyth made their expected progress in the Pembrokeshire Knock Out Cup but not before they had been pushed all the way by a determined Fishguard and Goodwick side from two divisions lower.
Indeed, Fishguard came very close to snatching victory in the final moments when they were awarded a penalty that was eminently kickable but since it would only have earned them a draw they opted to kick to the corner in an attempt at scoring a try. They duly won the lineout but their forward drive to the line was halted – and the referee blew the final whistle, despite the fact that the Seagulls felt they might have been awarded a second penalty for collapsing the maul.
Aberystwyth played with the strong wind in the first half at The Moors and took a 13-6 lead as outstanding No 8 Lee Glover and prop Arwel Lloyd scored tries to go with a penalty by outside half Jamie Rees. Fishguard responded with two penalties from outside half Mark Lennard but they played well as forwards Gwilym Evans, Thomas Ilaisa, Mike Mitchell, Randall Williams and Mark George tackled well and the front row of Gerwyn Davies, Mark James and Richard Cook scrimmaged well.
Jamie Rees added two further penalties for Aber in the second period but Fishguard managed a good try from replacement prop Andrew Morrillo which Lennard converted, alongside a third penalty, to set up a grandstand finale, but Aber held out and that final chance for Fishguard went a-begging.
Fishguard coach Alan Phillips was quick to praise his entire squad for their efforts and there is no doubt that when Aber made their long journey back to Mid Wales they knew that they had been in a real contest!
Fishguard: Gareth Adamson: Matthew Reynolds, Rhys Williams; Steve Jenkins; Matthew George: Mark Lennard; Alun George: Gerwyn Davies; Mark James; Richard Cook: Gwilym Evans; Thomas Ilaisa: Mike Mitchell; Mark George; Randall Williams. Replacements: Huw Evans; Gavin Walsh; Andrew Morrillo; Carwyn Thomas; Gareth Owen; Richard Hunter.

Hertel Player Of The Month For October 2009
Pictured is Mark Boswell, Pembroke RFC's second row forward and Hertel player of the month for October.
Mark has been playing exceptionally well this month and fully deserves his £50 cheque, generously donated by Hertel, who are Pembroke RFC main sponsors for 2009 /10. Mark is one of the senior players in the Pembroke pack and is one of the forwards who have played at a higher league level, formally with Tenby.
Mark was obviously schooled in the art of second row play from an early age, being the son of current Pembroke forwards' coach Ossie.
Pembroke are indebted to Hertel for this partnership agreement.

Pembrokeshire KO Cup:
Seasiders welcome back top players
Tenby United 29 points Pembroke 13 points
Tenby United moved forward in the Pembrokeshire KO Cup at the expense of a Pembroke side which had already defeated the Seasiders in the league and Swalec Bowl but were unable to match the home side in taking chances and paid the price.
The Seasiders were boosted by the return from Narberth of influential back row men Sam Smith and Timoci Kaumahotoya and both played influential roles alongside Nicky Guymer, Mike Lewis, Scott Payne and Lee Tucker as key ball winners so that half backs Matthew Sheppard and Tom Lewis had plenty of possession to use.
The Scarlets also won their share of possession via the outstanding Luke Hansford, Steve Dyde, Mark Boswell, Robin Badham and Richard Mason but they failed to turn pressure into points so that they trailed 15-3 at the break as outside half Phil Williams slotted a penalty but was off the mark with other chances within his range.
Hansford scored both Pembroke tries as reward for his support play but Tenby had three good tries by talented young No 9 Sheppard, Kaumahotoya and Lewis, who also contributed a penalty and three conversions, including that of the final try when Rob James came off the bench and was driven over the line.
It helped the Seasiders to an excellent win and their overall play showed that they are more than capable of climbing the league table with this squad.

Jonathan in Wales’ starting line-up to face Argentina
Jonathan Davies has been selected for Wales’ starting line-up against Argentina at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, November 21st.
The 21-year-old replaced Tom Shanklin who suffered a broken nose after Blues’ team-mate Gethin Jenkins accidentally clipped him going into a ruck in Wales’ 17-13 win over Samoa.
Davies played an impressive 25 minute cameo role as a replacement and has now been handed his opportunity to shine against the Pumas by coach Warren Gatland. "Jonathan came on at inside centre on Friday when Tom was injured and he acquitted himself well," said Gatland.
"That's his natural position, he plays there for his region and is comfortable there. "Jamie is the more experienced player and more than capable of playing at 13 and we are looking forward to the continuation of the partnership from the second half last weekend."
Jonathan Thomas won his 48th cap when he also came on as a replacement against Samoa, but isn’t in Wales’ 22 to face the Pumas.
Argentina is dangerous and has a formidable pack, but despite losing 16-9 against England last weekend, they’ve beaten Wales four times in their last six meetings.
Wales: James Hook (Ospreys); Leigh Halfpenny, Jamie Roberts (both Cardiff Blues), Jonathan Davies (Scarlets), Shane Williams (Ospreys); Stephen Jones (Scarlets), Gareth Cooper; Gethin Jenkins (both Blues), Matthew Rees (Scarlets), Paul James, Alun Wyn Jones (both Ospreys), Luke Charteris (Newport Gwent Dragons), Andy Powell, Martyn Williams (both Blues), Ryan Jones (Ospreys, capt).
Replacements: Huw Bennett, Duncan Jones (both Ospreys), Bradley Davies (Blues), Dan Lydiate (Dragons), Dwayne Peel (Sale), Andrew Bishop (Ospreys), Tom James (Blues).

Two Jons picked on bench for Wales versus Samoa in autumn international
Two of Pembrokeshire's finest rugby players have been picked for Wales on the bench for Friday (13th November) night's clash with Samoa.
Ospreys' second row Jonathan Thomas returns to the squad after sitting out the All Blacks' visit after being cited. And Jonathan Davies also retains his place on the bench.
Warren Gatland has made five changes to team that lost 19-12 against New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium.
Ospreys outside half Dan Biggar returns when he starts at half back with Dwayne Peel. In the third back division change, Blues wing Tom James replaces Shane Williams.
Huw Bennett starts at hooker with Matthew Rees moving to the bench and Blues flanker Sam Warburton comes in for regional team-mate Martyn Williams.
Stephen Jones, Gareth Cooper and Shane and Martyn Williams miss-out all together with the Scarlets trio of Martin Roberts, Jonathan Davies and Morgan Stoddart providing cover for the backs from the replacements bench.
Front row cover is supplied by Rees and Ospreys prop Craig Mitchell, whilst fellow Osprey Jonathan Thomas and Blues second row are also included.
WALES: James Hook; Leigh Halfpenny; Tom Shanklin; Jamie Roberts; Tom James; Dan Biggar; Dwayne Peel; Gethin Jenkins; Huw Bennett; Paul James; Alun-Wyn Jones; Luke Charteris; Andy Powell; Sam Warburton; Ryan Jones (Captain).
Replacements: Matthew Rees; Craig Mitchell; Bradley Davies; Jonathan Thomas; Martin Roberts; Jonathan Davies; Morgan Stoddart.

Pembrokeshire KO Cup:
Parsons powers Cardis through
Haverfordwest 6 points Cardigan 20 points
Cardigan made progress in the Pembrokeshire Knock Out Cup at the expense of fellow Third Division (West) participants Haverfordwest in a typically hard-fought tussle at Merlins Bridge where the elements inevitably played a part.
The Blues took the early lead with a penalty from talented young full back Oliver Reyland after 14 minutes but Cardigan showed their ability to counter-attack in the 37th and 43rd minutes of the first period when their backs showed good handling skills from around their own 22, quick inter-passing allowing left winger Wayne Parsons to finish well on both occasions to give his side a 10-3 interval lead.
It was a similar story after the break as Haverfordwest had youth players Matthew Clarke and Jamie Barnett playing well at flanker and outside half respectively, whilst Craig Barnett came on in the second period after the tenacious Richard James had been injured and Mike Venables switched to the scrum half spot, Reyland moved to the wing and Barnett came on as full back.
But it was Cardigan who scored first when another counter-attack saw outstanding flanker Gethin Davies cross in the corner midway through the period. Alun Harries looked sharp for the Blues on his return from injury but as they tried to play ‘catch up’ rugby their only reward was a second Reyland penalty.
It was Cardigan who had the final word when a useful kick to the corner and excellent work at the ensuing line-out saw nippy scrum half Tom Turner reach the line to set the seal on a Cardigan victory and the chance to enter the draw for the next round.

Davies and Thomas relish autumn test series
Jonathan Thomas is delighted to get the nod from Wales’ coach Warren Gatland ahead of the forthcoming autumn international series.
Last season was a nightmare for the likeable Ospreys’ forward. He spent most of his time frustratingly in the treatment room, after a groin operation and shoulder and neck problems, Jon only featured once against Italy in the Six Nations in Rome.
“I’ve now been enjoying my rugby injury free,” said Thomas.
However, after a long-hard summer rehabilitation programme, the popular man from Pembroke has rediscovered his form, but not in his familiar back row spot, because he’s moved to second row where he’s made such an impact and been chosen for Wales’ autumn international squad in that position, which kicks-off against the mighty All Blacks on 7th November.
“It was obviously a dream come true when I received a call to tell me that I was in the Welsh squad. Obviously, I had my fingers crossed, but wasn’t really expecting to get selected so soon after my injuries.
“I can’t wait to meet up with the boys again, and if I get the chance to play for my country, I’ll give it my best shot.”
Thomas is not the only former Pembrokeshire player included in Gatland’s squad because former Whitland and current Scarlets’ centre Jonathan Davies has really caught the eye. Davies won his first cap for Wales in the successful summer tour to North America and will be aiming to build on his international reputation by playing some part against New Zealand, Samoa, Argentina or Australia at the Millennium Stadium on successive weekends.
Spare a thought for super star Ospreys, Wales and British and Irish Lions scrum half Mike Phillips, who will sadly miss the series through injury.

Pembroke RFCs ‘Hertel’ Player of the Month for September 2009
Pictured is Gareth Jones receiving his Hertel player of the month cheque from specialist forward coach Ossie Boswell.
Gareth has been playing exceptionally well this month and fully deserves his £50 cheque generously donated by Hertel, who are Pembroke RFC main sponsors for 2009 /10. The voting was close for this award but Gareth just came out on top.
Gareth is a product of the Pembroke junior set up, and has progressed through the ranks, playing for the first team when he was still eligible for the youth, a task made all the more difficult because Gareth plays in the murky depths of the front row at hooker.
The pinnacle of Gareth’s playing career so far came in 2008 when he represented Welsh Clubs v Scottish Clubs.
Pembroke are indebted to Hertel for their new partnership agreement.

Tony Davies is the newly appointed President of Narberth Rugby Club
Tony Davies has recently been honoured with the presidency of Narberth RFC as reward for many years of yeoman service at the Lewis Lloyd Ground.
Ton is held in high regard at Narberth, having been with the Club since he was a teenager. He has played for, captained and administered the Club both as Fixture Secretary and Club Secretary. He was Secretary until recently of the Narberth RFC Former Players’ Association which he founded 18 years ago with the aim of fostering renewed fellowship and support for Narberth RFC.
Club spokesman Peter Spacey added “In addition to the Narberth club, Tony Davies has also had a long association with Pembrokeshire County RFC as a player, secretary, chairman and as president.
Tony is truly a rugby personality through and through, known and respected in West Wales rugby circles and beyond. We sincerely congratulate him on his appointment; wish him success and enjoyment representing Narberth RFC, a Club very dear to his heart”.
Although Tony Davies now lives in Crundale, he has remained loyal to the Otters over the years as a supporter and administrator. He added “It is a great honour to serve as president of Narberth Rugby club in succession to Tony Jones who succeeded another great servant of the club, the late Garth Parker.
Garth and I often travelled to matches together and I have fond memories of playing alongside him and working together as administrators after our playing days. I will do my utmost to continue serving the Club as president and maintaining the standards set by my predecessors.”

Youth Rugby:
County Under 19s march into Welsh semis
Pembrokeshire under 19s 48 points - West Carmarthenshire under 19s 5 points
Pembrokeshire and District under 19s marched into the Welsh Youth Cup semi-finals recently at Haverfordwest RFC by inflicting a crushing defeat on arch rivals West Carmarthenshire as they led by 12-5 at the interval but added a further 36 points without reply afterwards.
They produced a telling display of 15-man rugby, greatly pleasing the management team of Richard Jones, Robin Davies and Larry Spillane and the crowd in the process. With a dominant line-out and strong scrummage, plus a predatory back- row of Dan Gosnold, skipper Gethin Davies and No Llyr Griffiths, the backs were treated to a glut of quick ball and the only criticism was that chances were not finished in the first half as Pembrokeshire only led 12- 5 through tries by the mercurial left winger Gavin Thomas (Crymych) and the skipper Davies (Cardigan), with one conversion from outside half Scott Newton (Whitland). Jesse Rees claimed the only West Carmarthenshire try as the nippy No 9 from Felinfoel broke from a quick tap penalty but good runs by Brynley Toms (Whitland), Adam Phillips (Haverfordwest) and Ifan Thomas (Aberystwyth) failed to turn pressure into more points for Pembrokeshire.
Scintillating second half
But all that changed after the break as Gavin Thomas grabbed his second score for Ianto Griffiths (Crymych to convert, as he did when he powered through to the posts himself after good work by talented pivot Newton. Other scores followed from powerful second row Gruff Howells and the busy Rhodri Davies at scrum half, plus a brace for replacement Daniel Davies, with Ianto Griffiths adding two more conversions in what was undoubtedly an excellent team performance.
Pembrokeshire: Adam Phillips: David O’Leary (Haverfordwest); Ianto Griffiths; Dyfan Dafydd; Gavin Thomas (Crymych): Scott Newton (Whitland), Ifan Thomas (Aberystwyth): Lewis Davies (Pembroke); Dan Evans (Whitland); Brinley Toms (Whitland): Grufydd Howells (Crymych); Tom Bannister (Narberth): Dan Gosnold (Pembroke); Gethin Davies (Cardigan – Capt); Llyr Griffiths (Cardigan). Replacements: Johnny Phillips; Rhodri Davies; Daniel Davies (Crymych); Owain Morgans (Fishguard); Luke Harvatt; Adam Clark (Haverfordwest); Tom Bullivant (Milford Haven.)

Pembrokeshire Schools show character in defeat
Pembrokeshire Schools under 15s - 0
Rhondda Schools under 15s - 23 points
Pembrokeshire Schools welcomed Dewar Shield favourites Rhondda Schools on Friday night at Haverfordwest RFC having easily accounted for Cardiff A two weeks before but all were aware that this would a sterner test against a well drilled and streetwise side who had an excellent all-round game.
Pembrokeshire suffered two blows on the morning of the game when flanker Elliott Ronowitz and outside half Jack Price pulled out with flu and a broken nose respectively but the squad system meant two quality replacements in Jonathan Phillips and Rhodri Evans.
The game started well for Rhonnda and only heroic defence, with the forwards leading the way kept the visitors at bay - however the home scrummage was excellent and the defence was organised by Aled Richards (Fishguard) so the threat of the Rhondda driving line-out was negated. Despite exerting pressure there was only one score at half time as Rhondda hooker Alex Gibby scored a try to lead 5-0 and for the home side both wingers Aaron Tomkinson and Conor Rogers performed heroically in defence and were a constant threat in attack.
Better second half
Playing down the slope Pembrokeshire started to win some phase ball and with captain George Kenniford to the fore the Rhondda now were under pressure and fell into the same trap as Pembrokeshire did in the first half - namely kicking the ball away aimlessly, which created pressure.
However, the defensive lineout of the Rhondda enabled them to relieve the pressure and Jack Jones kicked a penalty to make it 8-0 with nine minutes to go. As Pembrokeshire tired, however, the Rhondda ran in two late tries from hooker Gibby and second row Kevin Bennett, which made the final score 22-0 to the Rhondda, but not a true reflection of the game as Conor Rogers (Fishguard) and Aaron Tomkinson (Preseli) played really well for Pembrokeshire.
To make it through to a coveted place in the last eight of the competition, Pembrokeshire must now win their remaining three Dewar Shield games versus Cynon (A), Llanelli (H) and Aberavon (A), which with quality training and an all- round acceptance of the team game plan should be achievable.

The Griffiths Cup 2009
(Held at Neyland RFC on Sunday 30th of August)
Gavin guides Crymych to Griffiths Cup success
Crymych won the first silverware of the season by defeating Haverfordwest 5-0 in an enthralling final at Neyland RFC’s Athletic Ground where a try from full back Gavin Thomas proved to be the only difference between two very good sides so that Crymych were able to claim the Griffiths Cup.
Haverfordwest were strong up front as the Jones twins, Carwyn and Llewellyn, played well alongside Liam Brown and Charlie George, and had an excellent ball carrier in Sam Parry, with Jamie Barnett and Scott Candler always looking dangerous at the back.
But Crymych’s defence was well organised by Rhodri Davies and Dyfan Dafydd, with Rhodri Harries and Johnny Phillips leading the forward offensive. The only score between the teams was that try by Thomas, which left Haverfordwest reflecting on what might have been had they taken their chances.
Absorbing build-up
In the semi- finals Haverfordwest had a tough time against Pembroke Dock before winning 3-0 and Crymych defeated Aberystwyth by 5-0 before meeting in the final.
Played under this format over a whole day for the first time, the weather was unrelenting as it rained throughout the competition, with Pembroke not turning up and Aberystwyth arriving late because of the weather and having to play three matches in quick succession. Other than those minor glitches it was generally agreed that in better weather it would be an absorbing competition – and presenting the trophy on behalf of the Griffiths family was Mike Griffiths, the well-known Neyland, Bridgend and Tenby scrum half, and Gillian Roberts.
Crymych: Johnny Phillips, Rhodri Harries, Carwyn Rees, Aled Matthews, Ben Evans, Gruffydd Howells, Dylan Jenkins, Jacob Bean, Rhys Davies, Dan Davies, Tomos George, Alun Gowman, Duncan James; Rhodri Davies, Dyfan Dafydd, Ianto Griffiths, Nathan davies, Carwyn James, Gavin Thomas, Rhodri Lewis, Tomos Rees, William Boulton, Sion Rowlands.
Haverfordwest: Liam Brown, Charlie George, Thomas Cromwell, Carwyn Jones, Llewellyn Jones, Morgan Scale, Sam Parry, Andrew Lamport, Tom Thomas, Asher Flowers, Adrian Phillips, Gareth Thomas, Ashley Sutton, Luke Harvatt, Jamie Barnett, Scott Candler, Dave Lewis, Liam Eaton.

Coach’s review
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
