Adi Harries - top score for Carew 2nds Adi leads Carew to Glebelands’ win

Johnston (144 all out) lost to Carew 2nds (180 for 8)

Umpires: Tony Waldeis & Rob Bellerby

Scorers: Emma Summons

Carew Seconds won the second division title last season and they moved back into top spot this season with a deserved win over Johnston at Glebelands as veteran opener Adi Harries led the way in the batting and the even older duo of Darren Thomas and Aled Davies bowled well in their cause.

Harries had 13 fours in his 67 runs as he and teenager James Hinchcliffe (five fours in 47) gave Carew a splendid start which was maintained by Steve Ive (20) and Aled Davies (three sixes in a late 27). Gary James, the whole-hearted Johnston opening bowler, had a hat-trick to celebrate in his 5 for 50 stint alongside a wicket apiece from Chris Fitzpatrick and Simon Williams as the visitors posted a good score of 180 for 8 wickets.

Johnston's Gary James took a hat trick

Johnston had decent knocks from Lee Summons (four sixes in his 35), John Summons (19), Fitzpatrick (17) and Ross Dewstowe (18) but Thomas (3 for 61) found support from the father and son duo of Aled Davies (2 for14) and Tom Davies (2 for 10). There was also a wicket each for another two of the Carew teenagers who make up the majority of the team in Stefan Davies and Dominic Hicks as Johnston were removed for 144, having used up only 30.1 of their allotted 43 overs!

‘Benny’ blitzes Burton

Burton (114 for 7) drew with Herbrandston (197 all out)

Umpires: Steve Blowes & John Austin

Luke Hayman - five wickets for Burton teenagerA superb innings of 111 by Herbrandston skipper Kristan Bennett helped Herbrandston to a big score at Oatfield Park but home side Burton refused to capitulate and held on for a rather tame draw at 114 for 7.

Bennett had eight fours and five sixes in his innings before he reached ‘Nelson’ and was stumped by Gavin Campbell off Johnny Griffiths. Alan McClelland (25) and Dean John (24) provided the necessary support as Bennett took centre stage with his ‘ton’ whilst teenager Luke Hayman showed what an asset he is going to be for Burton with an excellent 5 for 15 spell alongside Griffiths (2 for 24), Johnny Scale (1 for 44) and Morgan Scale (2 for 47).

Steve Jones led the Burton batting with a typically gritty 30 as Dean John and Kristan Bennett joined Nathan banner (3 for 23) in making sure that Burton never looked like achieving their target. But the homesters managed to hold out although they could only muster eight points, with Herbie pocketing a welcome 23 points which moves them off the top of the table but keeps them in touch with Crew Seconds nonetheless.

Tight finish in run feast

Cresselly 2nds (221 for 9) drew with Stackpole (228 for 8)

Andrew Hay - runs and wickets for Stackpole Umpires: Barry Wood & Glyn Pawlett

Scorer: Des Brace

There were runs galore at Cresselly before the home club’s second string had to settle for a draw having just failed by eight runs to beat Stackpole’s challenging total of 228 for 8, with their last pair at the crease.

Hugh Cox had nine fours and two sixes in his top score of 73 for Stackpole, ably assisted by Andrew ‘Sparky’ Hay (50, including seven fours and a six), Steve Mitchell (19) and Anthony Canton (17). Matthew Lewis picked up 4 for 49 as the main Cresselly wicket taker whilst skipper Richard Arthur bowled well in his 12 overs to claim 2 for 41 and Sion Jenkins claimed 1 for 47.

Cresselly’s response was based around good innings by Neal Williams (44, including two sixes and four fours)) and Rhydian Rees (six fours in his 42), with Iwan Izzard maintaining his good form with 22 before Matthew Lewis gave the necessary late impetus as he smashed three sixes in his 38 not out. It took Cresselly within sight of victory but they lost wickets to Hay (2 for 62), Richard McKay (2 for 42), Canton (3 for 54) and Chris Gibbs (2 for 59) so in the final analysis perhaps a draw was the fairest result after so much effort from both teams.

Mansbridge stars in Seasiders’ success

Paul Mansbridge - 93 not out for Saundersfoot Saundersfoot (199 for 3) beat Haverfordwest 2nds (195 for 8)

Umpires: Denis Chiffi & Walter Dash

Scorers: Hazel Poole & Ros Phillips

Paul Mansbridge showed that he can still rank with the best on his day as the veteran Saundersfoot batsman scored a classy 93 not out in leading his team to a big home win against Haverfordwest Seconds.

Haverfordwest had established a good score of 195 for 8 thanks to the batting exploits of Mikey Jones (six fours and two sixes in his 71) and Andrew Phillips (58, including six fours and a six), with supporting cameos from Nigel Delaney 17 and Simon Williams (21 in 11 deliveries). Danny Caine (2 for 40) and Dickie Parcell (2 for 63) were the pick of the Seasiders’ bowling attack.

But such a sizeable score soon looked well within reach as Mansbridge joined forces with Nick Cope, who smashed three fours and five huge sixes in his 47 as part of a partnership of 78 and then James Caine joined the batting fray with 30 not out as he and Mansbridge contributed an unbroken stand of 97 as they eased home with two balls to spare as Simon Williams (2 for43) and Nigel Delaney (1 for 34) were the Haverfordwest wicket-takers.

Fishguard versus Pembroke – match cancelled because of wet pitch

Seasiders slam the Ferry Boys

Sam Butler - Runs and a wicket for Saundersfoot Fishguard (75 all out) lost to Saundersfoot (212 all out)

Umpires: Trefor Evans & Hilliard Davies

Scorer: Hazel Poole (Saundersfoot)

Saundersfoot were good value for victory by a huge margin over a lacklustre Fishguard side which never fired on all cylinders as the visitors to The Moors amassed a sizeable 212 all out before bowling out Fishguard for a paltry 74.

Leading the way again for Saundersfoot was talented teenager Sam Butler with 67 runs, including eight boundaries, ably assisted by Nicky Cope, with a classy half century, Paul Mansbridge (25) and Simon Stanford (30).

Home skipper Nigel Morgan was the pick of their bowling with a 3-31 spell whilst Sam Kurtz bowled just one over at the end and grabbed three wickets for only three runs. Paul Davies (2-38) and Kevin Bowen (1 for 34) were the other successful bowlers for Fishguard but they couldn’t stop the Seasiders recording a very challenging total.

It suddenly became a mountainous target as Fishguard lost early wickets to Danny Caine (3 for 32) and Kevin Sykes (3 for 27) as only Kurtz (23), skipper Morgan (14) and Bowen (12) stayed long enough for double figures. Dickie Parcell supported his two pace men with 3 for 11 and it was appropriate that Sam Butler should finish things off with one wicket for a solitary single!

'Jenks' leads Pembroke power play

. Kevin Jenkins - bowled well for Pembroke Pembroke (205 for 7) beat Johnston (117 all out)

Umpires: Richard Merriman & Phil Marsden

Scorers: Delyth Summons & Steve Jenkins (both Johnston)

Pembroke showed something like their true potential as they easily accounted for a Johnston side which has been in form recently but found the experienced players in the Pembroke team leading their young players through by 88 runs.

Colin Kaijaks topped the batting with nine fours in his 50 before Paul White (29), Dan Williams 35 (four fours) and Phil Hay (32) were joined by Dan Scourfield, Sean Powell, Simon Smith-Wrench and Rob Weston in achieving double figures.

Steve Mills (Jnr) claimed 3 for 50 as the Johnston spear head whilst Chris Fitzpatrick (1 for 57), Ross Dewstowe (1 for 25), Gary James (1 for 38) and Neil Davies (1 for 30) also got on the wicket count but overall conceded too many runs.

When Johnston batted the backbone of their innings was taken away by another two wily old codgers in Kevin Jenkins (4 for 27) and Gwyn Griffiths (2 for 30) so that only Ross Dewstowe (four fours and two big sixes in his 41) ever looked likely to stay long. John Summons (12), Will Scriven (17), Gary James and Steve Price also added a few runs but in the final analysis a 2 for 0 cameo by Paul White easily finished things off in Pembroke’s favour.

Tom Davies - played well in Carew 2nds win Carew 2nds (189 for 6) beat Burton (131 all out)

Umpires: John Williams & Huw Davies

Scorer: Mark Venables (Burton)

Burton Seconds were unable to repeat their success of the previous week as they made the journey to Carew 2nds and came away with defeat by 58 runs as Wayne Cannon and Tom Davies led the homesters to victory.

Cannon fired a boundary-strewn 83 and found solid support from Barry Evans (24), plus 15 apiece from Adrian Harries and talented teenager Tom Davies as Carew recorded a healthy 189 for 6 despite a cracking 4 for 34 spell by Burton spinner Morgan Scale.

Davies then led the Carew bowling attack with a 4 for 32 analysis alongside Cannon (2 for 21) and another home ‘prospect’ in Dominic Hicks (2 for 13) so that although Jonathan Venables batted really well for his 60 (seven fours) and brother Mike (29) chipped in with two fours, only Morgan Scale, who completed a good personal performance with 19 not out, batted well as Carew claimed maximum points as their reward.

Hood heads Herbie to early finish

Nathan Banner - more runs for HerbieHerbrandston (75 for 1) beat Stackpole (74 all out)

Umpires: Les Hastings & Dave Loosmore

Pace bowler Paul Hood was the catalyst for Herbrandston’s easy win over Stackpole as the pace man fired in a four-wicket spell before Nathan Banner showed what a talented young cricketer he is with an unbeaten half century to send Herbie home early with a nine-wicket win.

Hood (4 for 32) and Kristan Bennett (2 for 17) showed just why they are regarded as the best opening bowling attack outside the first division as only Alex Hay, who had five boundaries in his 46, stood firm as Stackpole were rolled over for 74 and Steve Bennett also picked up 2 for 9 as the old-timer in the Herbie team.

Nathan Banner was joined by Alan McClelland as the two Herbrandston opening batsmen set out strongly   before ‘Mackie’ was run out for 16 (three fours). But Banner rapped eight fours and a big six in his confident 54 not out as Herbie picked up another win in their quest for promotion.

Danny Field - top scored for Haverfordwest 2nds Town win battle of the seconds

Haverfordwest 2nds (135 for 6) beat Cresselly 2nds (134 all out)

Umpires: Arthur Brady & Dai Morris

Scorers: Ros Phillips & Des Brace

Haverfordwest Seconds gained revenge for defeat against their counterparts from Cresselly on the first day of the season as they eased home by four wickets, despite a minor tremble when they looked to have the game well and truly sealed up after Danny Field had stroked his way to a classy 61 runs that included 11 fours and a six.

Put in to bat first, Cresselly reached 134 all out thanks to Scott Arthur (40) and talented youngster Iwan Izzard (three fours and a six in his 36 not out), assisted by Rhydian Rees (16) and Sion Jenkins (12)   as Simon Williams was again the pick of The Town bowlers with 4 for 39. Colin Williams (2 for 39), Chris Phillips (2 for 26) and Nigel Delaney (2 for 27) were the other successful home bowlers as Cresselly scored fewer runs than they might have hoped for.

Haverfordwest lost an early wicket but veteran opener Andrew Phillips (four boundaries in his 29) joined Danny Field in a productive stand of 82 before Field departed having scored seven fours to start his innings with some gusto. Cresselly skipper Richard Arthur (2 for 44) joined Matthew Lewis (2 for 14) and Sion Jenkins (1-24) in applying the screw as Haverfordwest lost four quick wickets before Colin Williams (13 not out) was joined by John Tooze (9 not out) in steering Haverfordwest Seconds to victory.

Glebelands Gang win again

Damian Arthur top scored with a fine half century Johnston (192 for 5) beat Cresselly 2nds (188 all out)

Umpires: Walter Dash & Alan Hansen

Scorers: Steve Mills (Snr) and Des Brace

Johnston showed that on current form they need fear no team in the section as they chased down Cresselly 2nds big total of 188 to win by five wickets and secure maximum points in the process. Cresselly showed their strong batting line up as they scored 188 all out in 42.2 overs but might have reached the 200-plus mark but for an inspired spell of bowling by Johnston’s Chris Fitzpatrick as he claimed 5 for 26 in 11.2 overs alongside Lee Summons (2 for 35). Damian Arthur used his wealth of experience to good effect as he top scored for the visitors with 51 and found willing support from Scott Arthur (29), Nick Davies (19) and Neil Williams (17). It looked a daunting target but on a good batting track at Glebelands there were runs aplenty for the in-form Johnny Summons, who had eight fours in his 43 alongside Steve Mills Jnr (19) before Ross Dewstowe blasted 35 and Chris Fitzpatrick rounded off a good personal performance with 34. Matthew Lewis (2 for 34) and skipper Richard Arthur (2 for 22) bowled well for Cresselly but Lee Summons followed dad in the run-scoring stakes and belted four fours and three big sixes in his rapid-fire 37 not out which saw Johnston home in only 37.4 overs.

Town battle hard for Racecourse result

Haverfordwest 2nds (177 all out) beat Pembroke (112 all out)

Umpires: Glyn Pawlett & Tony Scourfield

Scorer: Ros Phillips

Haverfordwest 2nds grafted their way to a comfortable home win over Pembroke at The Racecourse as they survived a mid-order batting lapse to build a good total and then shoot out Pembroke with a concerted effort in the field.

Colin Williams marked his return to second team action after a few seasons out of the game with top score for Haverfordwest 2nds, belting two big sixes and five fours in his 44 as he shared in a stand of with his nephew Simon Williams (27) that included the biggest six of the match. Julian James (41) and Mikey Jones (14) had given The Town a solid start as Perry Phillips (4 for 26) and Sean Powell (2 for 8) were the pick of the Pembroke bowlers after Kevin Jenkins (1 for 30) and Spencer Harries (1 for 32) had toiled hard early on without any luck. Paul ‘Chalkie’ White took a good catch at deep mid-wicket to shift Jones from a full-blooded pull shot as another boost for the visitors in the field.

But Pembroke were unable to find any solid partnerships, as The Town had done, with only veteran wicket-keeper/batsman Colin Kaijaks ever looking settled as he top scored with 31 against the pace of Simon Tremaine (3 for 55) and the spin of Chris Phillips (4 for 24). Phil Hay chipped in with 23 but no-one else stayed long and Haverfordwest reaped maximum points as their reward for a battling success.

Burton celebrate first win for two seasons

Morgan Scale - runs and wickets for Burton Stackpole (133 all out) lost to Burton (134 for 6)

Umpires: Tony Waldeis & John Austin

Scorers: Claire Cox and Mark Venables

Burton celebrated their first victory in almost two and a half seasons as they beat Stackpole by four wickets to break out of their long-running struggle to find a victory. They asked Stackpole to bat first and limited them to a reasonable score and then had Neville Davies making a welcome return to action as he top scored with 49 not out that included eight boundaries.

Burton slow bowlers Steve Jones and the much younger Morgan Scale shared eight wickets as they returned respective figures of 4 for 10 and 4 for 34, ably assisted by some good fielding that kept Stackpole on their toes, with another promising youngster in Luke Hayman picking up 2 for 20 as reward for bowling a good line and length.

Richard McKay (38), John Davies (27) and Alan Webster (23) were the mainstays of the Stackpole batting, assisted by a late 24 not out from Chris Gibbs.

Burton had decent innings by Richard Hayman (20) and Morgan Scale (29) in support of Davies so although Anthony Canton (2 for 24), Alan Webster (1 for 4), Andrew Hay (1 for 30) and Richard MacKay (1 for 34) all bowled quite well for the homesters it was never enough to stop Burton’s big win!

Seasiders slammed by Herbie

Dean John - 5 wicket haul for Herbie Herbrandston (85 for 3) beat Saundersfoot (81 all out)

Umpires: Peter Perry & Phil Marsden

Scorers: Reg Owens & Hazel Poole

An inspired spell of bowling by Dean John and Kristan Bennett helped Herbrandston beat Saundersfoot by seven wickets as the Seasiders were unable to come to terms with Herbie’s fast bowling attack after winning the toss and electing to bat. Talented teenager John returned his best-ever figures in this division of 5 for 15 and with skipper Kristan Bennett taking 4 for 15 at the other end, Saundersfoot were soon reduced to 84 all out, despite the efforts of Sam Butler (23) and Daniel Caine (13).

Herbie lost Nathan Banner early on but veteran opener Gary Davies (25) and Jonty Bennett (34) took them to within sight of success before Leigh Marchant and Kristan Bennett made sure that Herbie claimed 27 points to the opposition’s three points and rose to the top of the table as their reward.

Runs galore in entertaining draw

Wayne Cannon - top scored for Carew 2ndsCarew 2nds (265 for 7) drew with Fishguard (209 for 6)

Umpires: Dennis Chiffi & Dave Brandon

There were runs galore at Carew as the home side built up a mammoth 265 for 7 and Fishguard showed they have acquired a steely resolve as they scored 209 for 6 in their allotted overs to secure a draw.

Wayne Cannon led the Carew batting with a boundary strewn 76 and found support from Tom Davies (36), Darren Thomas (29), Barry Evans (27), Adi Harries (21) and Aled Davies (23 not out), with 2 for 45 apiece from Rhys Dalling and Jonathan Strawbridge in the visitors’ attack. Rob Couzens (1 for 64) and Ben Watson 1 for 56) also toiled hard and skipper Nigel Morgan claimed 1 for 4 from a late cameo.

At one time such a daunting task might have finished Fishguard off but they knuckled down to their reply as skipper Morgan led the way from his No 3 berth and was still there at the end with eight fours and two sixes in his 91 not out to go with an undefeated century in his previous match. He found support from teenagers Rhys Dalling (32) and Sam Kurtz (six fours in 39 not out) so that although Darren Thomas (2 for 59), Tom Davies (2 for 22), Matthew Phillips (1 for 40) and Barry Evans (1 for 28) tried hard for Carew it was Fishguard who finished well with an unbroken 90 stand between Morgan and Kurtz.

13th June 2009

Sam Butler - 84 not out for SaundersfootSam stars for Seasiders

Saundersfoot (216 for 2) beat Stackpole (212 all out)

Umpires: John Williams & Richard Merriman

Scorer: Hazel Poole

Saundersfoot enjoyed a big win over Stackpole after they had chased down such a big total thanks to a splendid innings of 84 not out by 14 year old Sam Butler, ably assisted by veteran Paul Mansbridge’s unbeaten 66, as they won with eight wickets in hand.

Andrew Hay inspired Stackpole to a challenging 212 all out with his excellent 92 which included ten fours and four sixes before he was bowled by James Caine, just when a ‘ton’ looked a real possibility. John Williams (30) and Richard McKay (29) provided the necessary support for Hay as Dickie Parcell (4 for 48), Kevin Sykes (3 for 30) and Caine (2 for 22) were the principal Saundersfoot wicket takers.

But then Butler took over as he stroked ten boundaries and was well supported by Steve Cook’s 34 before he was joined by Mansbridge in an unbroken stand of 128, with the old-timer belting ten fours and a six, to turn what looked a big run chase into a stroll in the park!

Summons steers Glebelands Gang home

Johnston (174 for 5) beat Herbrandston (173 all out)

Umpires: Arthur Brady & Glyn Pawlett

Scorer: Steve Jenkins (Johnston)

1.	Leigh Marchant bowled by Lee SummonsAnother good innings from opener John Summons, his third of the season already, saw Johnston to a five wicket win against Hook at Glebelands.

Johnston had enjoyed early success when Herbie batted first and slumped to 12 for 3 as Lee Summons shifted Gary Davies and Leigh Marchant whilst Steve Mills (Jnr) bowled Nathan Banner.

But Herbie battled back via Jonty Bennett (43), Alan McClelland (28), Jason Chapman (17), Paul Hood (24) and Dean John, with a late 25 not out, as Lee Summons finished with a creditable 5 for 41 alongside other wicket-takers Chris Fitzpatrick (3 for 55) and Steve Mills (2 for 33).

Herbie sought out early success but were thwarted by Summons and Steve Price (25) in a useful opening stand of 60 before Chris Fitzpatrick blitzed 11 fours in his speedy 48 that helped really win the game in Johnston’s favour Summons also had 11 boundaries in his 72 and although there was a wicket each for Kristan Bennett, Nathan Banner, Dean John and Steve Bennett in the Herbie camp it was the Glebelands Gang who were good value for a five-wicket win.

Nigel Morgan - 100 not out for Fishguard captainRuns galore on The Moor!

Fishguard (283 for 5) drew with Haverfordwest 2nds (273 for 7)

Umpires: Steve Blowes & Tony Waldeis

Scorer: Ros Phillips (Haverfordwest)

There were plenty of runs on The Moor as Fishguard scored a huge 283 for 5 and Haverfordwest 2nds gave chase with such good effect that they were only ten runs short of matching the opposition at the end of their 45 overs.

Fishguard’s innings was given real impetus from the outset as Jonathan Strawbridge rasped four fours and five huge sixes in his 61 from only 43 deliveries, whilst Dave Haynes returned to something like his form of last season as he stroked eight fours and two sixes in his 60.

It was just the platform that home skipper Nigel Morgan needed to show that there is still life in the old dog as he reached an undefeated 100 off the penultimate ball of the innings, including 11 boundaries and a six. Dai Davies was the pick of the Haverfordwest bowlers with 2 for 21 whilst Colin Williams (1 for 36) made a welcome return to action alongside his nephew Simon (2 for 88).

Haverfordwest were boosted by some good batting as Mark Cross had ten fours and two sixes in his 68 as he shared 60 with Dai Davies (27), whilst Nigel Delaney rapped 73 (five fours and a six) against his old colleagues and formed a 90 partnership with Richard Scriven (six fours and two sixes in his 55). Rhys Dalling was the pick of the Fishguard bowling with 2 for 39 but Haverfordwest batted well and in the final analysis a draw was the fairest result after so my good innings.

Nigel Phillips - led Pembroke to victoryFather and son duo set up Pembroke win

Burton (161 all out) lost to Pembroke (205 for 6)

Umpires Huw Davies & Phil Marsden

Scorers: Mark & Dennis Venables (both Burton)

The father and son duo of Nigel and Perry Phillips helped Pembroke pick up maximum points at Oatfield Park as they shared six wickets and so beat Burton by 44 runs. Pembroke made good progress on an excellent batting track at Oatfield Park after Johnny Scale grabbed 2 for 39 but Dan Williams smashed a six and nine fours in his top score of 68 alongside Spencer Harries (38 not out), and Dan Scourfield (31), with this pair sharing 11 boundaries. Also taking a wicket each were Tom Baker, Luke Hayman and Ian Woods but they couldn’t stop Pembroke speeding past the 200 mark and setting a big challenge for Burton.

Skipper Mike Venables top scored for Burton with 39, ably assisted by Richard Hayman (35), but Gwyn Griffiths claimed 2 for 21 and then Nigel Phillips (3 for 22) and Perry Phillips (3 for 43) broke the back of the Burton riposte so that only Gavin Campbell (17 not out) stood firm as Burton failed to build on a steady start.

Matthew Phillips - good all-round for Carew 2nds‘Hammer’ steers Carew through Cresselly 2nds (181 for 7) lost to Carew 2nds (182 for 7)

Umpires: Les Hastings & David Loosmore

Scorer: Des Brace (Cresselly)

Matthew Phillips is known as ‘Hammer’ at Carew and the all-rounder helped their second string beat their counterparts from Cresselly with a useful all-round display.

Cresselly had steady innings from Neil Williams (39), who rasped four boundaries in as many balls before getting out, and Steve Thomas, who is back to his old form and top scoring with a stylish 46 (five fours and two sixes). Matthew Lewis also belted three fours and two sixes in a typically aggressive 30 and talented teenager Ewan Izzard chipped in with 20 runs as Matthew Phillips (2 for 20) and Stefan Davies (2 for 16) were the pick of the Carew bowling attack.

Aled Griffiths led the Carew counter-attack after the interval with 55 runs (eight fours) alongside Wayne Cannon (46) as Matthew Lewis (3 for 45) and Sam Harts (2 for 48) were the pick of the home bowlers – but Matthew Phillips hammered a late 25 not out which finally swung the game in Carew’s favour as part of a three-wicket win.
