Pictured at the presentation of the training jackets are Tony Finnegan of A & A Scaffolding; Pembrokeshire Referees’ Society Officers, Danny Thomas (President) receiving the jacket, Steve Williams (Chairman), Jonathan Twigg (Secretary), Chris Stapleton (Assistant Secretary) and Helmut Reinhardt (International Liaison Officer). Speaking on behalf of the company, Tony said he saw the Referees Society like his own Company in establishing a strong relationship with the people of Pembrokeshire and he appreciated the referees’ dedication to their sport and was 100% behind their end of season recruitment of new whistlers, where his sponsorship he hoped would be a small step in helping the Society achieve their aim.
Responding on behalf of the Society, Secretary Jonathan Twigg acknowledged the “foresight of the A & A Scaffolding in supporting the Society”.
He hoped the sponsorship would continue for many years to come in the hope of ensuring new referees are trained and participating in local football.
It is certainly the next best to playing the game and anyone interested should contact Society Officers, Pedr McMullen or Pembrokeshire League Secretary Brian Hawkins for further information.”

Jonathan receives Pembroke’s Award of Merit
![]() | |
Jonathan Thomas was the recipient of an Award of Merit at the Pembroke Town Council Annual Awards Evening held in the Town Hall, Pembroke recently, for his services to rugby and his home town. Jonathan was born in Hundleton and plays at flanker for The Ospreys and Wales. He started out playing for Pembroke RFC Juniors before his talent was spotted and he progressed to play for Swansea RFC and played for Wales at Under 16, Under 19 and Under 21 level before making his full international debut against Australia in 2003. To date, he has played 47 times for Wales and has scored 7 tries – and he was part of the Welsh side that won the Grand Slam in 2005 and 2008. A modest unassuming man, he has never forgotten his connection with Pembroke and is always willing to support local events and offer encouragement to younger players. Jonathan is a credit to his sport. Unfortunately, Jonathan was unable to attend the Awards Evening but collected his certificate from the mayor a few days previously, stating that it will take pride of place in his new home in Swansea. Well done JT!

Rose picks up her West Coast prizeRose Jenkins was our first-ever winner of a competition to win a sports shirt from West Coast and we recently visited the shop in Quay Street with Rose and her husband Graham, the sporting all-rounder from Kilgetty. Rose eventually plumped for a rugby shirt in fetching pink and blue hoops for Graham to wear on their forth-coming holiday and our pictures shows Rose with West Coast’s lovely lady Cath Humphries – and Jenks looking resplendent in his new shirt. |

Andrew Davies is Folly Farm Player of the MonthNarberth scum-half Andrew Davies has been nominated as the Folly Farm Player of the Month by the Otters’ coaching team. In announcing the award, forwards’ coach Sean Gale said, “The award this month is to a player who has shown a fantastic attitude and has an outstanding work rate around the field. His covering tackles have been first class and each week he is challenging with Adrian Killa for the number nine spot. “This means that he has to be at the top of his game continuously whether it in training or out on the paddock and he has managed to accomplish both.” |

James earns Scarlet’s December awardJames Walters’ commitment to the cause at Pembroke Rugby Club this season has earned him the latest in the monthly awards when he collected a cheque as December ‘AMEC-sponsored player of the month’ from Darrell Willington, one of the coaches at Pembroke RFC.
James was selected by the “touch line supporters” at Crickmarren for his willingness to play anywhere in the pack, even though he is certainly a highly promising young prop, and for his eagerness to travel to home and away games even though he is currently residing in the Swansea area. He is certainly a player to watch for the future and his gritty displays have made him a popular player with the rest of the pack.AMEC are the main sponsor of the 1st XV and Pembroke are grateful for this partnership, and our picture shows James receiving his award |

Buy a calendar and help a good cause
The hard-working committee which is raising money for the Andrew John Fund has come up with the novel idea of a sporting calendar for 2009 based on action shots of the current Haverfordwest RFC squad.
Andrew, better known as ‘Kanga’, has always been involved in sport himself and brother Paul shows off the colourful calendar, which has veteran flanker Andrew Thicker on the cover, like the John boys a Prendergast lad. There are a host of ideas to swell such a deserved fund since Kanga is suffering from Motor Neurone Disease and this one has created a great deal of interest. It is an ideal present for any sports lover, especially if they follow the Blues, and can be purchased for just £5 from Haverfordwest Rugby Club, West Coast (Quay Street). A quick phone call to Paul John (01437 764062) or Alun Wills (01437 767237) will also secure the calendar in plenty of time for Christmas.
Hockey players and umpires needed
They train on a Wednesday from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Sir Thomas Picton School and a warm welcome is guaranteed anyone who is interested. For more information, please contact Ben on 07917 452577.
