Great night of celebration at sports awards evening

The audienceThe Sport Pembrokeshire Awards for 2009 were a resounding success as almost 600 people attended the ceremony at Folly Farm and cheered the nominations for having the honour of being nominated, with some heart-warming moments that showed how important sport is in our community.

But as well as those quite rightly in the limelight there were other congratulations that need to be made and PembrokeshireSport.co.uk is  more than happy to try and paint a picture of what else went on.

Ideal Venue:

Firstly, there is no doubt that Folly Farm is the ideal venue and the theatre provides the perfect stage for such a big event. Add the facilities for feeding so many people afterwards and the fact that the fairground rides are available for an hour before the start of the event as a real bonus for the youngsters (and the young at heart!) All the staff were extremely helpful and helped to make it a smashing night.

John Deason, Bill Carne and Ben FieldWell done

Credit also needs to be given to the Sport Pembrokeshire workers because their efforts ensured the smooth running of the event under the guidance of John Deason, with Ben Field doing a cracking job in the build-up to the special evening, organising all the meetings, sorting out the nominations and ordering the superb engraved glass trophies amongst a host of other jobs. He received excellent support from Russell Jones, Alan Jones, Angela Miles and the rest of the staff, who were all there on the evening doing a variety of jobs.

Excellent sponsorship

There was excellent sponsorship by Chevron, Western Telegraph, Radio Pembrokeshire and Folly Farm, plus a generous donation from Eddie’s Snooker Hall, with Jayne James of Chevron doing the introduction to MCs John Deason and Bill Carne. She did a good job of welcoming everyone in her first Sport Pembrokeshire Awards Ceremony.

Phil’s back in action

Making a welcome appearance was former Chevron man Phil Thompson, who was so involved in the three previous awards ceremonies and had been invited as a special guest. But there was no sitting amongst the guests for Phil, who was moving tables and helping in any way necessary, and thoroughly enjoying himself, as always.

Well done Cllr Anne

Cllr Anne Hughes, the Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, was also in attendance to present her Special Award,  shared by outstanding young badminton player Jordan Hart and top athlete Lauren Bell. Cllr Anne spoke very well and it is nice to have a chairman who is so in touch with young people.

Superb Audience

The audience were simply brilliant, with their vocal appreciation of all the winners and finalists much appreciated and providing the perfect back-drop to some lovely moments, like when Richard Young won the Disability Sport Achievement award and was so delighted to receive his memento. The Crymych Rugby Club supporters, the girls from Hook Cricket Club and the gymnasts were certainly worthy of an extra mention for their cheering!

Top photographs

Taking the photographs of all the finalists was Martin Caveney, who was also in his fourth year of involvement, and his pictures will make sure that all the trophy winners will have a second memento of a lovely evening.

Bill Carne and Ben StoneRadio Interviews

All the category winners were interviewed for Radio Pembrokeshire by Ben Stone, the popular presenter who has done so much to promote sport on air. He was joined by Bill Carne in also interviewing some of the others involved, like parents, and these interviews were put out on the airwaves the following Friday evening on the ‘Bill and Ben’ show.

And finally . . .

Well done to all who nominated candidates in every category, you did a wonderful job and f you were in attendance I’m sure you enjoyed yourself. But it is worth remembering that there were still a host of deserving candidates in all sections who weren’t nominated – so don’t be afraid to nominate them next year. It doesn’t matter if they are not judged to be the winners because everyone who gets a mention is certainly a winner in their own right!

Have a very good sporting Christmas from us PembrokeshireSport.co.uk
