Male Sporting Achievement Award

Joe’s Swansea success recognised at Sports Awards

Joe Allen - Swansea City and Wales
Winner, Male Sporting Achievement Award

Male finalistsJoe Allen has really caught the eye over recent years as a key midfield player with a Swansea City side which is in with a chance of gaining Premiership status in English Football.
He was educated at Narberth Junior School and Ysgol y Preseli, and he was identified by Swansea City scouts as having potential from the age of nine. Over the past decade Joe has dedicated himself to becoming a professional and a full Welsh International, and has done just that with his fitness, high work rate and total dedication.

Best performances so far

During the past year Joe has produced the best football of his career so far, proving to be one of the best midfield players at Swansea City in cementing a first team place for himself at the age of 18. His mature displays for Premiership-chasing Swansea have been hailed by his club bossed Roberto Martinez and Paolo Sousa.

International honours

International honours have followed with Brian Flynn, the Wales Under 21 manager, selecting Joe on ten occasions during the team’s successful UEFA U 21 campaign, despite his tender age. Joe capped a fantastic year for club and country when he earned his first full international cap as a substitute against Estonia at Parc y Scarlets in May.
He is an excellent role model for young people and will go on to become one of the Welsh footballing stars of the next decade, and retains his modesty and pride in being a Pembrokeshire product into the bargain.

Adam Davies – Pembrokeshire Harriers and Wales High Jumper
Finalist, Male Sporting Achievement Award

2009 has been the best year so far for Adam Davies, a talented young high jumper with Pembrokeshire Harriers. Hard work & commitment to training has certainly paid off because in January he became West Wales Champion and in February, he became Welsh Indoor Champion with a jump of 1.93m, maintaining his number one ranking in the UK.
Then at the UK indoor Championships in Birmingham he won silver, before rounding off the indoor season by representing Wales in the Celtic International Competition. In the summer he became Welsh Schools’ Champion and gained further international honours, competing in the Schools International in Northern Ireland and in the Celtic Cup in Carmarthen. This event saw him jumping a season’s best of 1.95m, ranking him sixth in the UK Outdoors. The season’s highlight was representing Wales in the UK Games in Cardiff, achieving bronze, which was presented to him by the Olympic 400m champion David Hemery.

Luke Llewellin – Wales and Great Britain Rifle Shooter
Finalist, Male Sporting Achievement Award

Bill Carne congratulates sharp shooter Luke LlewellinIn 2009, Luke Llewellin has had a very busy year, shooting every weekend at the qualifiers and selection shoots all over the UK, travelling many miles in the process. He has shown a huge amount of commitment to the sport and has been rewarded by shooting for Wales again twice this year in two disciplines and receiving the ultimate honour of being selected to represent Great Britain in the World Championships in Australia in November - and is still only 17 years old!
His achievements in 2009 include the fact that in 17 competitive shoots he has won 14 in his class, runners up twice and 4th once to show his genuine class in the world of shooting.

He arrived back from Australia and attended the sports awards’ evening almost immediately to show how proud he is of his Pembrokeshire connection and it is a racing certainty that we are going to hear a great deal more at a very high level about this very talented young sportsman in the very near future.
