Broad Haven School beats the best in British gymnastics

Broad Haven School Gymnastics Team – British Champions

Winners, Junior (under 16) Team of the Year Category

Broad Haven School - U16 Team of the YearBroad Haven School Gymnastics Team has been very successful for a number of years with children from the School regularly representing Pembrokeshire and competing in the Urdd Nationals in Aberystwyth -  but this year the children have excelled themselves as they became British Champions!.
In March, three teams travelled to Cardiff (5 girls and 5 boys) to compete in the Welsh Floor and Vault Competition and boys’ pairs sports acro. All the teams managed to win their disciplines and then went on to represent Wales in Stoke on Trent in May.

Boys become British Champs

The boys’ team surpassed themselves under the watchful eye of their coach Andrew Grey and became British Champions. This is the first time any Welsh Team has won the competition and everyone involved with the school was justifiable proud of their achievement.
Training for this competition started in September, with the Head Teacher, Simon Thomas, taking the after-school club. From January the selected teams were in the fortunate position to be coached by Andrew Grey, who is a parent of one of the children in the team.
Often training would take place after school, during the weekends and holidays, and without total commitment from pupils and the support of their parents and coaches the team would not have achieved this prestigious title.

In addition to the obvious on-field success in terms of win ratios and trophies, the club also has a real commitment to the community role of the junior section.  Each squad has at least 20 active members of both sexes with some having many more, each squad also has at least three qualified coaches who are just as committed as the players, and these coaches have raised over £10,000 for charity over the last two years through end of season sponsored cycle rides.

Sir Thomas Picton Under 15 Girls’ Hockey Team Welsh Champions

Finalists, Junior (Under 16) Team of the Year Category

STP - U16 Team FinalistsUnder the guidance of committed PE teacher Heather Wale, STP girls’ hockey teams enjoyed probably its best season ever, winning all the Pembrokeshire and West Wales titles – and one of those teams was the U16 squad, which was full of talented and enthusiastic individuals. Unbeaten in all competitions, they clinched the Pembs and West Wales titles before travelling to North Wales for the Welsh Finals. Having successfully negotiated their pool matches the girls narrowly won their semi-final before being crowned Welsh Champions in a nail biting final.
Tragically, two days after their triumph, team member Sarah Thomas tragically passed away. Her devastated teammates were informed as they prepared to compete for the school in the West Wales under 18s finals but in difficult and emotional circumstances the girls somehow managed to show great courage, determination and unity to win yet another title.

National team titles are very difficult to come by and require more than just ability – and this group of girls certainly showed all the attributes required to succeed and overcome adversity.
