New Satnav needed for Ashley
Ashley Mathias is a popular member of the Neyland Rugby squad who is well known for his enthusiasm to play, as he did when the All Blacks played at Amman United in the Swalec Bowl competition recently, but he arrived there a little late after getting the venue mixed up with Ammanford.
Ashley travelled with his mother and girl friend, who are both keen Neyland fans, and they all journeyed by car. Peter Davies, who had been on the team bus, received a phone call from Ashley when the team were changing at Amman United, asking how Ashley should find the ground and he duly arrived after being told where to go. It was only then that it transpired that Ashley had actually got to Ammanford’s ground by mistake, had been in the changing rooms waiting for his mates when total strangers arrived and started getting changed! Ashley made a hasty retreat and soon arrived to meet up with his colleagues – and was praised by Mr Davies for his typically whole-hearted approach to the game. Ashley had his leg gently pulled after the match by Peter and Co - and his team mates could well be clubbing together to buy him a Satnav so that he doesn’t get lost again!
Spectator stifled at Whitland
There is fortunately still some humour at rugby matches and no-where was it more in evidence recently than at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn, when Whitland entertained Bonymaen in a top of the table clash.
A bespectacled visiting supporter stood at the back of the stand and throughout the first half shouted at the referee whenever the official gave a decision in Whitland’s favour, but stayed quiet if the decision went in favour of his team. At the start of the second period a few of the home supporters began to chide him gently and after yet another comment about a decision made some 65 metres away he was told loud and clear by a Borderers’ fan,
“By God, I wish I had a pair of glasses which can see as well as yours do!”
There were hoots of laughter and I am glad to report that it even brought a smile from the old boy, who duly offered his specs.
He actually stayed fairly quiet after that but it shows that rival supporters can sit closely together and be civilised – wouldn’t it be nice if the same thing could happen in football!
Chris gets Welsh Premier call up
Chris Watts and his wife Susie turned up at the Bridge Meadow Stadium to cheer on their talented son Rickie and the rest of the Haverfordwest County side, and Chris was surprised when he opened the programme to see his name in the programme, and not that of Watts junior.
Now Chris was a very good footballer in his own right with Camrose, Fishguard and Merlins Bridge and once he was over the shock of seeing his name in the programme was delighted to be able to say that at last he was on the team sheet in the Welsh Premier.
Susie told some of the lads at the Bridge Meadow that her hubbie was like a dog with two tails whilst Ricky could just smile because he knows that he will be back in the programme for the next home match, barring another typographical error from outstanding compiler John Hughes.
Right venue – wrong DVD
Staying with the Bluebirds for a moment longer there were a few chuckles when excellent coach Ronnie Beynon called together the talented youngsters in the academy side so that they could take part in their weekly analysis session where their task was to look at a DVD of the Bala versus Haverfordwest County match, with a view to studying the use of the long ball out of defence in the match, and it’s success rate.
The students sat eagerly there, pens and clip boards in hand, when Ronnie plugged in the play- back machine and inserted the disc into the slot – only to find a loud stream of rock music pouring forth instead of the Bala versus Bluebirds’ tussle. The music was clearly to the youngsters’ liking because they were waving arms and legs in time to the beat but they were soon back in harness as a chuckling Ronnie trotted across to the office, picked up the DVD and placed the music used as pre-match entertainment over the tannoys back in its rightful place!
Pensioner Sam takes a bus trip (or two)
Seen recently on local transport to Cardigan and Tenby was a well known footballing pensioner who is clearly using his bus pass to enjoy himself on a few days out in the inclement weather. We’ll call him ‘Sam’ and he was clearly enjoying himself, taking a walk around the towns (it would have been a few miles jogging a few years ago), and enjoying a cup of coffee in a local cafe (and a tasty cake, which would have been unthinkable when he was in his fitness regime!). Still, it’s an ill wind that doesn’t do anyone any good because at least his long-suffering better half gets a break for a few hours when he is pacing around the house because it’s too wet to go for a bike ride. I’ll be glad now when I get my bus pass too – perhaps he’ll let me go with him then!
