Sport Pembrokeshire strikes oil
Chevron is to continue championing Sport Pembrokeshire for another year.
The oil giant, which has a refinery at Pembroke Dock, has agreed to continue its sponsorship of Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council – for 2010. The partnership is believed to be the country’s longest running grass roots sport development sponsorship scheme.
Next year this sponsorship will - in addition to the prestigious annual Sport Pembrokeshire Awardsscheme – help deliver a range of sports development projects across the County.
They include projects in fun football, disability sport, school-based tennis, hockey centres and school cricket.
Longest-running sponsorship scheme
Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member responsible for Sport said: “Our partnership with Chevron is Wales’ longest running sponsorship scheme for grass roots sport and we are extremely grateful for its continuing support.
“The company has been a great friend of community and school based sport for many years and we hope that the partnership will continue for many years to come.”
Essential part of life
Jane James, Chevron’s Policy, Government and Public Affairs Manager said sport was an essential part of every child’s development.
“It’s not only great fun but it promotes leadership skills, builds confidence and life-long friendships and provides a positive outlet in a sometimes challenging environment,” she said.
“We are delighted that Chevron can give ongoing support to Sport Pembrokeshire and continue to help bring these benefits to so many children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to take part in extra curricula sporting activities.”
Filling vital gaps
John Deason, Sport Pembrokeshire Manager, said Chevron’s funding support helped to fill key funding gaps.
“In a climate where so much funding for grass roots sport is being siphoned into the 2012 Olympics it is essential that we secure local sponsorship for basic sports development that is a sporting legacy for all. We are very grateful for Chevron’s decision to stick by us.”
