Idzi’s brillant penalty save earns Bluebirds a drawBala 1 goal – Haverfordwest County 1 goalHaverfordwest County came from behind to secure a draw against Bala at Maes Tegid in an early kick-off. The visitors, defending against a gale-force wind, found themselves behind as early as the seventh minute; Owain Picton buring an effort from inside the box. Despite going a goal down the visitors kept their shape and defended well and were happy they were just a goal behind at the half time. The Bluebirds came out strong in the second half and constantly had the hosts on the back foot. Bala goalkeeper Leon Bimpson pulled off three top-drawer saves to deny Jack Christopher, Robbie Walters and Lee Bevan from scoring whilst Christopher was also disappointed to have another effort disallowed by referee Kevin Parry. In the 65th minute the visitors finally levelled matters as Walters’ stinging shot flew past Bimpson. The hosts could have snatched victory in the 86th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Goalkeeper Lee Idzi, to ensure the Bluebirds nicked a draw, brilliantly saved Ricky Evans’ well-struck spot-kick. Bluebirds’ boss Derek Brazil would have preferred three points, but he knows only too well that if Idzi hadn’t made that terrific penalty save his side would have been left with nothing. Haverfordwest County 2 goals –
CPD Porthmadog 0 goalsHaverfordwest County left it late to secure victory over bottom of the table CPD Porthmadog at a sun-soaked Bridge Meadow. The Bluebirds grabbed two-goals in the last ten minutes to seal their third win of the season and manager Derek Brazil said it was no more than what they deserved. The home side dominated possession in the first period, but lacked composure in front of goal, as the scoreline frustratingly remained goalless at the break. It was much of the same in the second half, as the visitors’ defence had their backs to the wall, and again, the Bluebirds came close to scoring as they hit the woodwork. Patience was the name of the game, and the deadlock was finally broken on 80 minutes. Defender Jamie Grimes bust a gut to get into the visitors’ box and drilled low and hard into the bottom corner. Smack on full-time and the Bluebirds extended the lead. Paul Michaels’ excellent run down the left and by-line cross-led to midfielder Jamie Bradford struck a wicked right-footed effort crashing into the roof of the net. “I’m delighted we kept a clean sheet, and we played some good football, but we really should have won by at least five clear goals,” said manager Brazil. Blain’s header sinks Bluebirds
Newtown 2 goals – Haverfordwest County 1 goalDylan Blain scored a second half winner to earn his new club Newtown three precious points over his former club Haverfordwest County.Blain only left the Bridge Meadow outfit a few weeks ago, to join up with his former Bluebirds’ team-mate Darren Ryan, now manager of the mid Wales outfit. The visitors got off to a decent start, and there was no surprise when striker Robbie Walters nodded home a 19th minute Jack Christopher cross to take the lead. Minutes later and the Bluebirds were unlucky not to extend the lead as a Christopher side-foot effort rebounded off the woodwork. The hosts equalised on 36 minutes. A corner into the box caused mayhem and as the ball fell underneath goalkeeper Lee Idzi up popped Jamie Breeze to score with a simple tap-in. Five minutes after the interval Blain rose highest at a corner, to plant a header into the back of the net, and leave his former team-mates with that sinking feeling as they slipped to their third defeat of the season, which drops them down the table. Newtown: David Maguire; Craig Williams; Adam Worton; Damien Daniels; Robbie James; Andrew Thomas; Dylan Blain; Jamie Breeze; Neil Mitchell; Nicky Ward; Ross Stephens. Bluebirds’ comfortable passage into next round
Taffs Well 0 goals - Haverfordwest County 2 goals
Welsh Premier Haverfordwest County overcame a potential banana skin to win at Taffs Well and ease them into the next round of the Welsh Cup. Bluebirds’ manager Derek Brazil was happy to come away from Parish Road with victory, the visitors grabbed a goal in each half to seal their fate. The visitors had to wait until the 30th minute before taking the lead. A neat build-up led to an inch perfect cross for teenager striker Steffan Williams to finish at the far post. Taffs Well came out strong at the start of the second period, but goalkeeper Lee Idzi easily coped with everything that was aimed towards goal. Four minutes from the end the Bluebirds secured victory when Paul Michael found the back of the home outfit’s net from inside the box. At the end of October the Bluebirds entertain Aberystwyth Town, in the next round at the Bridge Meadow.

Late equaliser spoils Bluebirds’ afternoon
Haverfordwest County 2 goals - Bangor City 2 goals HAVERFORDWEST County were just minutes from victory when Bangor City grabbed a fortuitous equaliser to pinch a point at the Bridge Meadow. The visitors trailed 2-1 when a long throw-in to the Bluebirds’ box found its way to Citizens' Chris Roberts who scored with his knee to gain a draw three minutes from full time. The visitors led 1-0 at half time thanks to Jamie Reed finding the back of the net that Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Lee Idzi will be disappointed that he didn’t stop. In the second half the hosts began to get on top and levelled matters around the 75th minute. Striker Robbie Walters broke clear to neatly slot the ball past Paul Smith. Ten minutes later and the home side took the lead with a second goal scored by Walters, which was unselfishly set up by substitute Steffan Williams. But the visitors grabbed a late equaliser and left the Bluebirds players feeling bitterly disappointed that they didn’t win the encounter. Bluebirds’ gaffer Derek Brazil is happy with the start his outfit have made this season. In seven league starts they've lost two, won two and drawn three and that’s despite not having all the squad fit. Brazil is reasonably optimistic his team will do well for the remainder and wants his side to play with more confidence in away games.

Frater and Moses strike to sink poor Bluebirds
Llanelli 2 goals – Haverfordwest 0 goals
Llanelli scored a goal in each half to comfortably overcome battling Haverfordwest County at Stebonheath Park and virtually guarantee their place in the quarter final. The visitors failed to create any worthwhile chances in front of goal, and manager Derek Brazil will be concerned that his side are cheaply giving away far too much possession, especially in midfield. Andy Legg’s Reds scored the opener around the 20th minute mark. At least a seven passes movement resulted in Craig Frater, sweetly striking a half volley into the roof of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box. Midway through the second half and the Reds deservedly extended the lead following a goalmouth melee where Craig Moses stabbed the ball home from close range to put the cup tie beyond the disappointing Bluebirds.

Bluebirds gain a point on the road
GAP Connah’s Quay 1 goal – Haverfordwest County 1 goal Haverfordwest County travelled back from north Wales on Saturday evening with a point when really they should have taken all three at the Deeside Stadium. Bluebirds’ boss Derek Brazil was happy his side gained a draw on the road, but on reflection after creating plenty of goal scoring opportunities, Brazil will know only to well that his team should have done better in front of goal. The visitors took a 41st minute lead. Lee Bevan’s free kick into the home outfit’s box allowed midfielder Jamie Bradford to head home at the far stick. In the second half the visitors dominated and if it wasn’t for some great saves by Terry McCormick the visitors would have been out of sight. Leading by just one goal there’s always a danger that the opposition will nick an equaliser – and that’s exactly what happened ten minutes from full time. Some poor defending by the Bluebirds gifted Nomads’ player/manager Mark McGregor with a far post header – and both sides settled for a point apiece. This coming Saturday (26th September) the Bluebirds face a stiff home test against Bangor City, kick-off 2.30 p.m.

Two late goals shatter Bluebirds’ cup dreams
Haverfordwest County 1 goal – Aberystwyth Town 2 goals
Haverfordwest County conceded two late goals at home against Aberystwyth Town to effectively end their cup dreams on Tuesday (15th September) evening. After an end-to-end first period, where both sides created scoring chances it remarkably remained goalless. Former Bluebird Luke Bowen struck a post and the Bluebirds were unlucky not to open their goal scoring account when Paul Michael struck the crossbar with a dipping right foot strike following a clearance from a corner. The visitors began to dominate midfield and they forced the Bluebirds to give away possession far too cheaply. Lee Idzi pulled of a superb stop to once again deny Bowen from eight yards, while the Bluebirds failed to really test visiting goalkeeper Steve Cann. The visitors broke the deadlock seven minutes from full time. Some rather sloppy Bluebirds defending led to substitute Geoff Kellaway neatly tucked the ball home from close range. A few minutes later and another substitute Glyndwr Hughes added the second with his head from a corner. On full time the Bluebirds pulled back a consolation goal. Substitute Robbie Walters drilled home an 18-yard direct free kick – but it was a classic case of too little too late. Haverfordwest County: Lee Idzi; Bobby Briers; Jack Jones; Gareth Elliott; Jamie Grimes; Paul Michael; Jonathan Clarke; Jamie Bradford; Luke Robinson; Jack Christopher; Kevin Morgan. Substitutes: Kyle Graves; Robbie Walters; Lee Bevan; Steffan Williams.

Rising Bluebirds’ star Steffan makes his point against Port Talbot
Haverfordwest County 1 goal – Port Talbot Town 1 goal
Steffan Williams struck a 90th minute equaliser to earn Haverfordwest County a draw at home against Port Talbot Town on Friday (11th September) evening. Just when it looked the Bluebirds were going to suffer their first home league defeat of the season, up popped Williams to score from the tightest of angles to save his side’s bacon. The diminutive 17 year old is definitely the find of the season, and is certainly making an impression up front for Derek Brazil’s Bluebirds. The home side trailed 1-0 at half time. Former Bluebird Lee John, with a suspicion of offside, gave the visitors a 15th minute lead. Port Talbot manager Mark Jones must have felt mixed emotions at the interval, although his side led at the break they were down to ten-men after another former Bluebird Liam McCreesh, received a second yellow card and was sent off following a rash challenge on Jarrod Price. The visitors held firm in the second period and looked odds on to travel back up the M4 with three precious league points. Goalkeeper Lee Kendall tipped Robbie Walters’ wicked effort over the bar as the pressure mounted. Then right on full time some neat build-up play down the right led to time and space in the box for deadly Williams to finish with aplomb and earn a point when everything looked lost.
Haverfordwest County: Lee Idzi; Terry Evans; Daman Searle; Lee Bevan; Jamie Grimes; Kyle Graves; Kevin Morgan; Jamie Bradford; Robbie Walters; Steffan Williams; Jarrod Price. Substitutes: Paul Michael; Bobby Briers; Gareth Elliott; Jack Jones; Luke Robinson.

Bluebirds shot down at Airfield
Airbus UK Broughton 3 goals – Haverfordwest County 1 goal Airbus UK Broughton gained a thoroughly deserved victory over Haverfordwest County at The Airfield on Sunday (6th September) afternoon The visitors have played well at home this season, but Derek Brazil’s Bluebirds are finding the going tough on the road. Carl Owen opened the scoring to give the Wingmakers a one-goal cushion at the interval. Robbie Walters equalised for the visitors shortly after the break, but the Wingmakers were rewarded when veteran Marc Lloyd-Williams put the hosts ahead and Matthew Cook’s 69th minute strike sealed victory. The Bluebirds face a stiff home test against Port Talbot Town on Friday (11th September) night, kick-off is at 7.30pm.

Bluebirds deservedly win local derby clash
Haverfordwest County 2 goals - Carmarthen Town 1 goal
“A cracking win for us!” was the considered verdict of delighted Haverfordwest County chairman Rob Summons after the Bluebirds had shaded out old rivals Carmarthen Town in an entertaining Friday night floodlit match – and who could blame him because a large crowd cheered the home side to victory.
Carmarthen might point out that they hit the crossbar in the first minute from Stuart Roberts and the last minute of time added on when a Danny Thomas header also found the woodwork – but the Bluebirds took a 2-0 interval lead with cracking goals by Jarrod Price and Robbie Walters and were always able to stay in front despite a wicked free kick by Mark Pritchard which finally beat Idzi.
Haverfordwest took the lead as early as the ninth minute when Price received the ball almost 30 yards out and slammed a superb shot into the top corner which gave Carmarthen keeper Neil Thomas no chance as it bulged the net.
The Bluebirds might have doubled their lead from a drilled cross by Price but Terry Evans headed over the bar – but after 44 minutes the homesters finally added that vital second goal when good work by Steffan Williams and Price in the build up allowed Walters to tuck the ball home from close range.
Haverfordwest’s back four looked strong until Carmarthen battled back and Pritchard reduced the deficit with his left-foot pile-driver to put pressure on Haverfordwest. Paul Fowler had a gilt-edged chance as he was put through but Lee Idzi saved superbly – as he did from a Terry Evans back header.
Jack Christopher had a half chance as he harassed Carmarthen skipper Mark Dodds but had no support and fired into the side netting from an oblique angle – and Carmarthen had that late Thomas chance in the eighth minute of time added on before Mr DC Richards finally blew the final whistle. Haverfordwest manager Derek Brazil was jubilant about the result and must have been pleased with his back four and the general balance of a team which battled from first to last – and thoroughly deserved the three points, if only for the way that they stuck to their task throughout.
Haverfordwest County: Lee Idzi: Terry Evans; Lee Bevan; Jamie Grimes; Damon Searle: Bobby Briers (Paul Michael); Kyle Graves; Jamie Bradford; Jarrod Price (Jonathan Clarke): Stefan Williams; Robbie Walters (Jack Christopher). Subs (not used): Ricky Watts; Luke Robinson.
Carmarthen Town: Neil Thomas: Craig Hanford; Dyfan Pearce; Mark Dodds; Chris Thomas: Tim Hicks; Danny Thomas; Stuart Roberts; Paul Fowler; Mark Pritchard; Nathan Cotterall. Subs: Steve Williams; Nicky Palmer; Deryn Brace; Alex Squires.
26th August 2009Welsh Selection for Lee and JackTwo of Haverfordwest County’s talented young players have been recognised with selection for the Welsh Under 23 semi-professional football team which is due to take on their counterparts from Poland at Richmond Park, Carmarthen, on the 8th September, 2009. Goalkeeper Lee Idzi and striker Jack Christopher made their international debuts at Stebonheath Park last season against Finland in a 1-0 defeat and both will be eager to mark this season with a win as part of the 18-man squad chosen by Terry Boyle. Bluebirds’ chairman Rob Summons was delighted with the news and said, “Both players have worked very hard under Derek Brazil and deserve their recognition. There is sure to be a large contingent from the club who will turn up to support the boys and we offer huge congratulations to Lee and Jack.”

Rising young super star Steffan strikes back for Bluebirds
Haverfordwest County 1 goal – Llanelli 1 goal Haverfordwest County came from behind to earn a deserved point against much fancied Llanelli at the Bridge Meadow on Tuesday (25th August) night.
Last week the Bluebirds drew 0-0 at Aberystwyth, and once again they drew to go top of Pool 2. The hosts suffered a disappointing Welsh Premier 3-0 defeat at Prestatyn Town at the weekend, but bounced back in a positive style against the Reds.
Haverfordwest County manager Derek Brazil gave youth a chance, and boy did they come up with the goods against Andy Legg’s Reds’ outfit, one of the hot favourites to win this season’s Welsh Premier and also want to do well in the Loosmoores Cup. The visitors took a 35th minute lead as substitute Ross Jones drilled home from outside the 18-yard area past the outstretched new Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Marty Ellicott. The hosts levelled matters on the stroke of the interval with a beautifully taken effort. A neat through ball allowed diminutive livewire striker Steffan Williams to show the Reds’ defenders a clean pair of heels. The 17 year old kept his composure to neatly lift the ball over advancing goalkeeper Craig Morris. Bluebirds’ teenagers Jack Jones, Ricky Watts and Stefan Williams, all played influential roles and have surely left an indelible mark on the mind of Brazil. In the second half both teams endeavoured to attack and played some entertaining football, but both failed to capitalise on their scoring opportunities and on the night a draw was the right result.
Haverfordwest County: Marty Ellicott; Bobby Briers; Jack Jones; Lee Bevan; Jamie Grimes; Kyle Graves (Captain); Ricky Watts; Jamie Bradford; Robbie Walters; Steffan Williams; Jarrod Price. Substitutes: Paul Michael; Nicky Woodrow; Kevin Morgan; Kristian Speake.

Prestatyn stun Bluebirds with three late goals
Prestatyn Town 3 goals – Haverfordwest County 0 goals Prestatyn Town stunned Haverfordwest County at Bastion Road; the Seasiders scored three goals in the final ten minutes to gain victory.
This secured the Seasiders’ first league points of the season, but they waited patiently before defender Jack Lewis broke the deadlock on 80 minutes. Derek Brazil’s Bluebirds were visibly rocked, and just two minutes later, former Rhyl striker Andy Moran found the back of Lee Idzi’s net, for his 100th Welsh Premier League goal. Right on full-time substitute Ian Griffiths, on for Jon Fisher-Cooke, added his name to the score sheet to complete three valuable points for the north Walians. The visitors made a double substitution on 70 minutes. Jonathan Clark replaced Jarrod Price in midfield and Nicky Woodrow replaced Jack Christopher up front. This didn’t have an impact as Bobby Briers came on for Paul Michael when they were one goal adrift. Referee Mark Whitby issued two yellow cards; both were from the Seasiders’ camp in the form of Neil Gibson and Gareth Wilson. Bluebirds’ manager Derek Brazil and assistant Mark Evans will be annoyed with the manner of defeat, and will now evaluate so they can quickly get back to winning ways.

18th August, 2009Loosemores Cup Cup clash finished goalless
Aberystwyth 0 goals – Haverfordwest County 0 goals Incredibly there were no goals scored in this first round clash between Aberystwyth Town and Haverfordwest County at Park Avenue on Tuesday (18th August) night.
Brian Coyne’s Aber outfit must have fancied their chances before kick-off, after they gained a convincing 4-0 win in Saturday’s Welsh Premier opener at Caersws. However, the Bluebirds gave as good as they got, but were disrupted as Gareth Elliott was stretchered off, but thankfully, the central defender’s ankle injury wasn’t as bad as first feared. Bluebirds’ manager Derek Brazil was happy with the way his midfield players battled for possession, but is looking for his front men to start hitting the back of the net. Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Lee Idzi pulled of three magnificent saves to deny the hosts taking the lead. Left-sided midfielder Jonathan Clark was menacing in attack and 17-year-old substitute Ricky Watts, impressed in attack and tracked back well to defend. Bluebirds’ strikers Nicky Woodrow and Robbie Walters both came close to breaking the deadlock, but on the night a draw was the probably the right result. Next Tuesday (25th August) Haverfordwest County face a stiff home test against Llanelli, in the next round of the Loosmores Cup, kick-off 7.30pm.
Aberystwyth: Dave Roberts; Steve Bowen; Gareth Hughes; Aneurin Thomas; Sion James; Michael Waters; Geoff Kellaway; Bari Morgan; Graham Evans; Luke Sherbon; Luke Bowen. Substitutes: Andy Evans; Robert Evans; Cledan Davies; Liam Button; Gwion ap Dafydd.

Gareth strikes for Bluebirds in first win of season over Welshpool
Haverfordwest County 1 goal – Technogroup Welshpool 0 goals
Gareth Elliott’s superb strike from inside the box earned the Bluebirds a solitary one-goal victory over Technogroup Welshpool at the Bridge Meadow on Saturday (15th August) afternoon.
The loyal serving central defender strolled into the box for a corner, and as the visitors’ failed to clear, Elliott pounced with a terrific right-foot finish inside the box to give the home side the lead on the stroke of half time.
Bluebirds’ manager Derek Brazil will feel happy with the final outcome, but quietly, must feel frustrated that his team didn’t perform better, but more importantly go on to score more goals in the second period, and put the game to bed earlier.
Overall it was a less than convincing performance by the Bluebirds, but the most important thing was to seal victory and secure three league points to kick-start the new season – and they achieved that.
The home side despite not setting the world a light with their brand of football, and also putting into context there was Jamie Grimes, Lee Bevan, Kyle Graves, Jarrod Price, Jamie Bradford, Robbie Walters and Jonathan Clarke were all making their Welsh Premier debuts.
Don’t forget it’s only the first game of the season and it will take a lot more time for this new set of Bluebirds’ players to gel together.
The visitors were probably kicking themselves at the interval, because they should have definitely taken the lead. However, striker Calvin Davies missed two glorious opportunities to break the deadlock and Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Lee Idzi pulled off a brilliant stop to deny Joe Price from close range.
In the second half striker Robbie Walters after a good build-up skied an effort from just outside the area over the crossbar, and Jack Christopher, who scored 20 goals last season, uncharacteristically missed two glorious scoring chances to extend the lead. Next Saturday, (22nd August) the Bluebirds travel to Prestatyn Town and must aim for a far better all round display if they are to come away with anything.
Haverfordwest County: Lee Idzi; Terry Evans (Captain); Jamie Grimes; Lee Bevan; Gareth Elliott; Kyle Graves; Jarrod Price; Jamie Bradford; Robbie Walters; Jack Christopher; Jonathan Clarke. Substitutes: Dylan Blain; Nicky Woodrow; Bobby Briers; Ricky Watts.
