Fixtures for 10th October 2009
Things certainly picked up a little this week as I managed to get nine of my 12 forecasts right, which is a big improvement from 50% the previous weekend. Narberth let me down at Llangennech after leading at half time but I was delighted that both Crymych and Pembroke won when I had tipped them to lose – well done the Preseli Men and the Scarlets!
There are quite a few local derbies this Saturday, always potential banana skins, but here goes, anyway!
Division One (West):
Narberth v Whitland
Whitland sit proudly atop the table at the moment whilst Narberth are in an uncomfortable ninth position so on paper it looks as if a Borderers’ win is a formality. But they know that the Otters will come at them like dervishes so it could be a real tussle. Verdict: I have to go for Whitland but I won’t be surprised if they come unstuck!
Division Three (West):
Crymych v Lampeter Town
Crymych gained a terrific win at Newcastle Emlyn last Saturday where they had to show their depth of character against a very good Emlyn side and they moved into third place as their reward, whilst Lampeter are in eighth place with two wins from their five starts. Verdict: A home win for the Preseli Men, hopefully with a bonus point as well.
Haverfordwest v Cardigan
These two old rivals will be eager for victory to push them up the table. Cardigan won well last Saturday against Llanybydder whilst the Blues lost at Morriston but generally play much better at home. Verdict: Cardigan to win by a narrow margin.
Division Four (West):
Betws v Milford Haven
Milford have surprised a lot of teams in this new section with their enterprising play and they entertain a Betws side which currently languishes in eighth spot with only two wins so far. Verdict: No doubt about this won – plain sailing for the Mariners!
Pembroke Dock Quins v Pembroke
This is another local derby match where the form book can be thrown out of the window. Pembroke have won all three home matches and the Quins have lost all five games so far but are steadily improving. Verdict: The match will surely be decided up front and for that reason I go for Pembroke because their pack looks really strong and might just supply the necessary platform.
Cefneithin v Tenby United
This will be a real challenge for Tenby after two successive wins because Cefneithin are traditionally strong on their own patch, although the Seasiders are confident at present. Verdict: I hope Tenby make it three in a row but I think Cefneithin will win with home advantage.
Division Five (West):
Llangwm v Aberaeron
This is a tough match for Llangwm, even at Pill Parks, because Aberaeron are currently strong up front and have a back division well directed by Dylan Evans. Verdict: The Wasps have lost five in a row and I fear this will be a sixth defeat.
Penygroes v Fishguard
Fishguard will still be elated by their big win over St Clears last weekend and so will go to Penygroes with confidence but face another stern test because the host club are third, with just one defeat from five outings. Verdict: This is a real challenge for the Seagulls and I hope they can maintain their 100% record nonetheless.
St Davids v Neyland
Another Pembrokeshire derby as Neyland travel to St Davids, eager for action after missing out last week because Pontyates couldn’t raise a team. The Saints are still seeking a first success but are at home so will have a useful squad, whilst Neyland will be looking to secure a third win. Verdict: Neyland to win but not before St Davids test them out.
