Venue: Oatfield Park, Burton

Haverfordwest rounded off their season in style as they recorded a victory by an innings over a makeshift Carew side in the DR Morris Cup Final at a wind-swept Oatfield Park.

That the game was played at all was a tribute to the endeavours of Brian Griffiths and his helpers at Burton Cricket Club – and it completed an unusual win double for The Town because the teams had agreed to also play in this match for the Jubilee Cup, which had previously been held over on several occasions.

Winners HaverfordwestSefton stars in Carew batting

Carew played six players of 16 or under as several key players were unavailable because of other commitments but they made a good start after they batted first, with Ian Sefton and Brian Hall contributing 56 for the first wicket before Hall was bowled by Steve Phillips for 30 (three fours and a six). Phillips also had Robbie Hicks neatly stumped by Town skipper Huw Scriven soon afterwards and it was left to Sefton to take Carew to a good score in their 20 overs, He moved quietly to 50 as he achieved that land-mark with the first of five towering shots to fly over the boundary and he finished on 82 not out from only 68 deliveries out of a tally of 134 for 4.

Haverfordwest lost ace run-maker Danny Potter for five runs as Rhys Davies trapped him lbw but Richard James (23) batted well before he was shifted by Tom Davies. His demise brought together Karl Rhead and Danny Field, who promptly showed their intentions with a string of big hits. Rhead had five sixes and eight fours before he became Rhys Davies’s second scalp when he was just seven runs short of a century, having faced only 72 balls. Field’s 74 runs were achieved from 64 balls and also included eight fours and five sixes, one of them right out of the ground. He was well caught on the long-on boundary by Brian Hall, going for another massive shot off Rhys Davies, as part of an impressive 3 for 25 haul by the powerful young Carew pace man .

Rhead and Field shared a productive partnership of 182 runs and helped The Town to a first-innings lead of 93 runs.

Runners up CarewCarew crash

Carew needed a good start to make Haverfordwest bat again but they lost Brian Hall, Aled Griffiths and James Hinchcliffe for only 13 runs and although Sefton chipped in with another 28 runs there was no-one else able to reach double figures against tight bowling from Phil Kirkby (3 for 10), Clive Tucker (2 for 13), Simon Williams (2 for 28), Steve Phillips (2 for 11) and Chris Phillips (1 for 11) as Haverfordwest won by an innings and 18 runs.

Nice dedication

Trefor Evans, the chairman of the Pembroke County Cricket Club, made the post-match presentations and thanked Burton for their hosting of the event as well as ever. Huw Scriven received the trophy from Graham Morris, dedicating the win to the club’s late chairman Steve James, whilst Brian Griffiths, judging the man of the match award for donor Winston Griffiths, gave it to Ian Sefton for his massive part in the Carew performance.
