500 pupils take to the cricket pitches!

Almost 200 primary school pupils took to the pitch recently for the Pembrokeshire Mixed Kwik Cricket Festival Finals Day in the annual tournament which seeks to find the best primary school team in the County. Designed for children aged between five and 11, Kwick Cricket uses a softball and plastic equipment and can be played on any flat surface inside or out.

47 schools competing

This year, 47 primary schools took part, reflecting the growing interest in the sport across the County and the winning team, Stepaside School represented Pembrokeshire in the South Wales finals.
The Pembrokeshire festival was organised by Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of the County Council – in association with the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches.

Top 18 at Haverfordwest Finals

Tournaments had been organised for each family of schools across the County earlier in June, with around 500 youngsters taking to the pitch before the top 18 teams qualified for the finals, which were then held at Haverfordwest Cricket Club.
Each school played four matches throughout the day, with three schools winning every match. The undefeated schools were Stackpole, Narberth and Stepaside, with Stepaside proving to be the eventual winners on the day by the number of runs scored in their matches.

Stepaside star for county

Stepaside then went on to represent the county at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff, where they played well in their three matches against some very strong opposition.

Sport Pembrokeshire Cricket Development Officer Matthew Freeman said the Pembrokeshire Finals had been extremely competitive with players displaying a very high standard of cricket on the pitch.
