Rugby Preview for
18th April 2009
Two wrong out of nine!
Another week closer to the end of the season and I clearly need a bit of a rest because after so much success it almost had me believing I could be a top tipster – but I am now beginning to flounder a little.
Last Saturday I had seven matches right and two wrong, where Whitland won at Narberth and Haverfordwest went down at home to Lampeter – although I did have some hesitation in those selections which I did voice in print.
This Saturday’s predictions are a little easier, I think, so let’s see how we get on!
Division One (West):
Narberth v Llangennech
The Otters won 38-31 in Llangennech and start as favourites for this clash, despite the disappointment of local derby defeat last Saturday against Whitland. They stayed in third place, however, so it will be interesting to see how they get on against a team seven places below them in the table.I’m sure Narberth will win with something in hand.
Whitland v Bonymaen
The Borderers looked a different side as they beat Narberth so it will be interesting to see if they can maintain that form against Bonymaen, who started the season badly but have slowly climbed into 8th place.Whitland won the previous tussle in Bonymaen by 18-10 and I believe they will complete the double here!
Division Three (West):
Aberystwyth v Haverfordwest
Aber won 26-10 at Merlins Bridge and Haverfordwest face an even greater challenge with so many injuries and a long journey to Mid Wales. Aber are second in the table and seeking promotion – andI think this will be a trip too far for the Blues!
Cardigan v Amman United
Cardigan lost last Saturday but played really well at table-topping Pontyberem so they should find Amman United a much easier prospect at the King George Vth Playing Fields. They won 28-13 at Amman United and I would expect the Teifisiders to win by a far bigger margin this time!
Lampeter v Crymych
This is a good test for Crymych since Lampeter are invariably strong at home and won at Haverfordwest last weekend to show they are in good nick. But the Preseli Men are in a rich vein of form and they should win this one with a little in hand.Division Four (West):
Brynamman v Pembroke
Pembroke oozed class when they slammed Pontarddulais at home but this match at Brynamman is a different kettle of fish because the opposition are favourites for promotion and are strong at home.I’d love to go for the Scarlets but I think this will be too big a task for them since Brynamman won at Crickmarren by 32-10!
Cwmgors v Pembroke Dock Quins
The Quins beat Hendy last Saturday without playing at their best and they are now fifth in the section table – but are never at their best on the road. They beat Cwmgors by 36-10 at Bierspool, though, and I think they will pick up a welcome away win here.Tenby United v Tycroes
Tenby beat Tycroes 34-6 in their away fixture and the Seasiders should be far too strong for this opposition – although they can sometimes be dragged down to the opposition’s level. Not this time, though, because Tenby will triumph here!Division Five (West):
Aberaeron v Fishguard
Fishguard travel to Aberaeron looking for revenge for a 15-13 reverse on The Moor and with a team that looks strong at the moment.Aberaeron have home advantage but I still expect the Seagulls to fly high if they are full strength.
Furnace v St Davids
St Davids are a great set of lads who play their rugby hard but haven’t managed to follow last season’s successes and third-placed Furnace have already beaten them 29-0 earlier in the season. The Saints will battle hard but I fully expect Furnace to show how hot they are with a double at the end of it!
Milford Haven v Llangwm
Another local derby where Milford haven start as hot favourites to win and maintain their quest for promotion. The Mariners won 29-0 at Pill Parks and after their inactivity last Saturday will be raring to go.The Wasps won well last weekend but will find Milford too hot to handle in this match.
