Luke leads the way as a British boxing champion
Luke Evans is only 15 years old but has already made a name for himself in Welsh amateur boxing circles since the Kilgetty youngster is a Welsh champion and has won 32 of his 41 bouts as proof of his real ability.
But it is not only his skills that have taken him a long way in a short time but also his determination and willingness to work very hard in training that involves three nights at the gym of Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club and to run up to four miles on the other days of the week.
Hard worker – and good listener
Luke is also a good listener to advice provided by coach Graham Brockway and even when he loses (which isn’t often) he takes it on the chin and knuckles down to work even harder in training.
“Luke is a very hard worker who deserves his success,” says coach Graham Brockway, “I wish every boxer who has been in our gym showed the same desire to improve through sheer hard work and common sense. Only nine defeats in all those bouts is a tribute to what he has done and I take my hat off to him”
Family connection
It is small wonder, however, that Luke should be so involved in boxing because his dad Ellis is assistant coach at Merlins Bridge and younger brother Martin is also making a name for himself in schoolboy boxing. All three travel regularly from Kilgetty to train and then travel all over South Wales, and sometimes even further afield, in search of the experience he needs to develop even further.
Title winner
Luke won his Welsh title last season when he outpointed Tom Preece (Cardiff) and he lost in the British Finals by only two points to Randall Brown, who went on to win a bronze medal in the European Championships as proof of his pedigree and an indicator of just how good Luke is.
Luke’s current target is a Welsh Association of Boys’ Clubs title and he has already boxed three times to deservedly reach the final against Patrick Stokes (Splott, Cardiff) in what should be a cracking contest since both are accomplished boxers.
