Rugby Preview for 4th April 2009 fixtures

Hard work last week!

It was certainly much harder to predict last week’s matches so I was pleased to end up with 8 out of ten results called right as only Tenby United and Fishguard were unable to win away games I thought they would stroll through. Still, 80% isn’t bad (much better than The Expert in football!) so let’s see how we get on with this week’s matches, where there are some tricky tussles again!

Division One (West):

Carmarthen Athletic v Narberth
Carmarthen Athletic are seeking the double since they beat Narberth 17-8 in the reverse fixture and are eager to close the gap on the Otters, who are two places ahead in third spot.
This could be a real battle and although I hope the Otters win I think this might just go the Athletic’s way again!

Whitland v Cwmllynfell
Whitland returned to winning ways last weekend at Llangennech and will look to continue that good form at home against a side they lost by 12-3 to in Cwmllynfell.
The Borderers look bang on to beat Cwm, who are now 11th – and I hope they can manage a bonus point as well.

Division Three (West):

Cardigan v Tumble
Cardigan lost narrowly at Crymych last Saturday but on paper this looks the banker bet of the day as they play host to a Tumble outfit who are appropriately named at the moment since they have won only once from 16 outings.
The Teifisiders won 76-0 at Tumble and they should walk this one too!

Haverfordwest v Crymych
Haverfordwest play host to a Crymych team which is packed full of confidence after recent good results but the Blues relish a challenge at home, as they proved when they beat leaders Pontyberem.
It could be close but I have to go with an away win for the Preseli Men at the moment.

Division Four (West):

Pembroke v Betws
Pembroke so often prove me wrong with their changes of form and they have already lost by 17-12 at Betws in the early part of the season so I am a little uneasy about their form.
But I’ll go for the Scarlets at home because they are a different side at Crickmarren.

Tenby United v Pembroke Dock Harlequins
With both teams losing last Saturday they will be eager for success in this local derby at Heywood Lane, and it should be a cracking game, especially if they are both at full strength.
The Seasiders won 16-13 at Bierspool and will be keen to complete the double over the Quins – and I think they might just do it.

Division Five (West)

Llangwm v Cefneithin
Llangwm face a real tough home fixture against Cefneithin, who beat Milford Haven last Saturday to return to the top of the table.
The Wasps have won only twice from 15 starts whilst their opponents have only lost once – and have a 62-3 previous stroll against Llangwm so although I hope the Wasps win I have to go for Cefneithin to keep on winning.

Fishguard v Swansea Uplands
This looks another banker bet for me because although Fishguard surprisingly lost last week in Furnace they should fly again in this match because Swansea Uplands are holding up the table with two wins in 14 games played.
The Seagulls beat the Uplands by 22-0  in Swansea and should definitely complete the double in this one.

St Davids v Neyland
Another local derby where the Saints are guaranteed a bigger crowd than usual as old rivals Neyland make a welcome visit in search of a double after winning 19-10 in Neyland.
I think the All Blacks will win – as long as they can master the big Saints’ pack.
