Rugby Preview for Saturday 17th January 2009
Division One (West):
Cwmllynfell v Narberth
Narberth beat Cwmllynfell at the Lewis Lloyd Ground by 46-3 and have since remained near the top of the table whilst Cwmllynfell have won just three out of their first 11 starts to stumble to 11th place. This is the sort of match that the Otters simply must win and will be targeting it as having definite bonus point potential.
Whitland v Felinfoel
This should be a hard-fought battle because Whitland are in seventh spot and Felinfoel are just a place above them, with similar records. The Borderers haven’t been firing n all cylinders but they won by 10-6 in their away match against Felinfoel and I expect them to complete the double in this match.
Division Three (West):
Cardigan v Lampeter
Cardigan have games in hand over the clubs above them and are still doing well whilst Lampeter have won only four of their first ten starts and finding it hard going. The Teifisiders won by 20-6 in Lampeter and will be eager to maintain their top-three spot so I go for a comfortable home win here!
Crymych v Llanybydder
Llanybydder are ahead of Crymych in the league table but have played two more matches and have lost their consistency after a promising start. The Preseli Men caused a stir when they won 21-12 in Llanybydder and are well capable of completing the double here – if their pack can get on top early.
Tumble v Haverfordwest
This is a match that the Haverfordwest management will have targeted as an away win because Tumble are in bottom spot with only one success from their first ten matches. The Blues beat Tumble 43-10 earlier in the season so have that boost as well. This is a must-win for Haverfordwest and I am confident they can win in Tumble.
Division Four (West):
Pembroke Dock Harlequins v Burry Port
The Quins ‘walking wounded’ are gradually beginning to return and they should have a strong side for this home match against a Tumble team which is in the bottom two and have only won twice all season. The Quins to win this comfortably, without any doubt!
Tenby United v Pembroke
Local derbies are always hard to predict but on paper Tenby United hold a big advantage over Pembroke in the form stakes. The Seasiders are second in the table with only one defeat from their first 11 starts whilst the Scarlets have failed to find any consistency and are in mid table.Tenby won by 13-10 at Crickmarren and will be looking for a coveted derby double – but even more importantly – league points in their pursuit of promotion.
Division Five (West):
Pontyates v Fishguard and Goodwick
Fishguard need to find more consistency in away matches f they are to climb the able and this game will show whether they have the ability to do well. Pontyates won only two of their first eight games and lost 32-13 to the Seagulls at The Moors. The Seagulls to win – if Huw Evans is involved and their pack play well!
Cefneithin v Neyland
This is sure to be a tough tussle for Neyland unless their New Year resolution is to travel better because Cefneithin are in the top three and playing well. They also won 24-13 at the Athletic Ground and sadly I think this will be an away defeat for the All Blacks.
Llangwm v St Clears
The Wasps are in bottom place in the able when they have the ability to be at least in mid table but are not playing to their potential. St Clears had high hopes of promotion but are in mid table despite previously beating the Wasps 48-5.But the Saints should still be too strong at Pill Parks unless the Wasps can begin to buzz in this new year!
Milford Haven v St Davids
Another Pembrokeshire derby but Milford Haven start as hot favourites for this match against St Davids since the teams are at opposite ends of the table. The Mariners won 41-19 in St Davids and will be looking for another bonus point from this fixture to maintain their surge for promotion – and should do it in style!
