Fishguard look backwards - and forwards
Fishguard and Goodwick Cricket Club celebrated an excellent season at all levels at their annual presentation buffet evening –and looked forward to the future as John Deason told players, parents and supporters of the exciting plans to renovate the current building which they share with Goodwick United.
He outlined the plans for a second floor to the building which included a veranda from which spectators could watch the games below, plus new changing rooms and other additions of real benefit to the club and community.
Guest speaker sings club’s praises
Guest speaker for the evening was Bill Carne and he congratulated the club on an excellent season which included runner up in the Alec Colley for the second team and runner up for the youth team in the Ormond Cup, both the first time that a Fishguard side had appeared in a final.
He praised the hard work of Russell Jones, Nigel Morgan, Gary Strawbridge and Sean O’Connor in developing some excellent youngsters like Jonathan Strawbridge, Matthew Morgan, Rhys Dalling, Sam Kurtz, Vaughan Davies, Scott Delaney, James Wade, Charles George, Matthew Driver, Owain Beynon and Stefan Hayes.
Also receiving a mention for their excellent performances during the campaign were David Haynes and Rob Couzens, who respectively topped the batting and bowling awards, plus skipper Nigel Morgan, who had again supplied inspirational leadership.
Good reputation
As Bill Carne told the members in attendance at the clubhouse, “You have become a club with a reputation for good coaching and being well organised. You have an excellent record in terms of discipline and other clubs like playing you, both at home and away.”
Sean O’Connor was the excellent MC for the evening and he joined Russell Jones and skipper Nigel Morgan in asking everyone to support the exciting plans for the new development which would take Fishguard and Goodwick into the next stage of their growth as a very good cricket club.
The award winners were as follows:
First XI Batsman: David Haynes for scoring 395 runs at an average of 39.5, which included four successive half centuries against Hook, Johnston, Llechryd and Herbrandston.
First XI Bowling: Rob Couzens grabbed 26 wickets at an average 0f 16.96 from his 116 overs, with a best spell of 5 for 30 against Saundersfoot in a cracking win.
First XI All-Rounder: Nigel Morgan amassed 254 runs in ten innings and claimed 16 wickets at an average of 14.19 in his 95 overs bowled.
First XI Most Improved Player: Matthew Morgan finished third in the batting averages, bowled well and was brilliant in the field as a deserved winner.
Second Team Player of the Year: Charles George, who is quickly making a name for himself and will soon be looking for a regular first team place.
Second Team Most Improved Player: James Wade, who is definitely someone to watch for the future with his developing all-round skills.
Under 17 Player of the Year: Jonathan Strawbridge batted superbly in the Ormond Cup Final to scoop the man of the match award and a huge talent for the future.
Under 15 Player of the Year: Scott Delaney is a very talented bowler who is already amongst the wickets and sure to serve Fishguard superbly in the future.
Under 13 Player of the Year: Owain Beynon is a more than useful all-rounder who is gaining experience quickly which will hold him in good stead.
Under 13 Player of the Year: Stefan Hayes is another very good all-rounder who bowls, bats and fields really well
