Pembrokeshire Rugby Fixtures 2009

Saturday, 3rd January 2009

Isn’t it great to start the new year with a full rugby programme back in Pembrokeshire after all the messing around with the Autumn Internationals (why don’t they just have them on Friday nights and Sundays so we can get on with local rugby?) There are some interesting fixtures this week to whet our appetites, like the local derbies between Haverfordwest and Cardigan, plus Fishguard versus Milford Haven! So why not get out and support your local team – they will appreciate it and you’ll get some nice fresh air!

Division One (West):

Felinfoel v Narberth
The Otters should be confident of victory against a side which is in seventh spot but leaked 10 more tries than they have actually scored.
Narberth are an attacking side so as long as their pack gains parity they should win – and hopefully secure a bonus point.

Whitland v Dunvant
On paper the easiest match of the season so far for Whitland against a side which lost all 11 of its league games up to Christmas. Having scrapped their semi-pro set-up, Dunvant have paid a heavy price and conceded 54 tries whilst scoring only 11 – and having a massive minus points differential of 120-369.
No doubt about this win – an easy win for the Borderers!

Division Three (West):

Amman United v Crymych
Crymych will have targeted this match as bonus-point win since Amman United are at the bottom of the heap, without a win at the turn of the year and having conceded 304 points whilst scoring just 95 points themselves.
The Preseli Men lost only two matches up to Christmas and should stroll home against this team.

Haverfordwest v Cardigan
Another ‘local’ derby where tradition says a close result is likely. Cardigan are doing well in the league table, having scored 34 tries in eight games and letting the opposition cross their line only 10 times whilst the Blues are eager to see their injury problems decrease so that they can field a more experienced side.
Haverfordwest showed their mettle with their superb win at Llanybydder but Cardigan should snatch the verdict, although the battling Blues can be relied upon to push them hard.

Division Four (West):

Llandeilo v Pembroke
Pembroke travel to Llandeilo trying to wrest away the home side’s 100% win record from their first nine starts, but knowing that a top-rate performance is needed against a team eagerly seeking promotion. Llandeilo have amassed no fewer than 45 tries and conceded only nine tries with their brand of attacking rugby.
This is a tough fixture for the Scarlets, whose away form is not good, and I can’t foresee anything other than a win for Llandeilo.

Pembroke Dock Quins v Betws
Betws are in fifth place, three above the Quins since they have won five times in eight starts, but Lenny Scourfield’s boys are strong at home and hopefully beginning to recover from a lengthy injury list.
The form book might say Betws but I am confident of a Quins’ victory!

Tenby United v Trimsaran
Another banker bet as Tenby entertain a Trimsaran outfit lingering in tenth place with seven defeats and only two wins.
Trim have conceded twice as many tries as they have scored and this must be a Seasiders’ success, with a bonus point thrown in for good measure.

Division Five (West):

Fishguard v Milford Haven
Milford travel to old rivals Fishguard seeking to confirm their status as promotion candidates against a Seagulls’ team which has really improved of late and is benefitting from the presence of Huw Evans. The Mariners have won seven and drawn one of their first eight matches but will know they can ill-afford to be complacent because this could turn out to be one of their hardest tussles.
I think
Milford will win – but the Seagulls will push them all the way first!

Pontyates v Llangwm
Llangwm are far better as a team than their tenth place (and only one win!) suggests but their away form is poor because they rarely travel with a strong enough team. This should be a game they target as a victory because Pontyates are ninth and won only two matches.
I hope the Wasps win but I have to go for Ponty at home.

St Davids v Aberaeron
St Davids caused an upset a couple of seasons ago when they beat Aberaeron at home but the Mid Wales side are in good form again and are in fourth place in the table.
The Saints will hope to use their powerful pack to give them a platform to halt Aberaeron’s running game but I think Aber will just be a little too sharp for them on the day!

Swansea Uplands v Neyland
Neyland are another of Pembrokeshire’s poor travellers but they must surely come back from Swansea Uplands with a win since the opposition are languishing in bottom place, having only won once so far.
The All Blacks must win this one – and hopefully will travel with their strongest possible team!
