Rugby Preview for 13th December 2008
Another good weekend for your resident tipster last week as I got eight out of ten results forecast correctly and I was delighted that the Quins proved me wrong as Lenny Scourfield’s boys traveled to Hendy and came home with a cracking win – well done boys!My other wrong forecast was with regard to Fishguard, who conceded a late interception try to lose and then my mate Huw Evans missed a late penalty chance or it would have been 9-1 in my favour. Tut .. tut Huw!
National League Fixtures
Division One (West):
Narberth v Dunvant
Dunvant are the current whipping boys, having lost all ten matches but they almost broke that duck as they lost 30-27 to Llangennech last Saturday. But the Otters will be too sharp for them behind the scrum and should also pick up a bonus point.
Tonmawr v Whitland
Whitland face a battle at Tonmawr, who are currently second but not playing as well as they did at the start of the season but the Borderers know that Tonmawr won 31-20 against Cwmllynfell so they will have to play at top form.My heart says Whitland might sneak it but I have to go for a home win here!
Division Three (West):
Amman United v Cardigan
After last week’s narrow defeat at home to Pontyberem this should be far easier for the Cardis against an Amman United side which lost by 38-3 against Laugharne and has yet to register a league success. No doubt about this one – a win for the Teifisiders!
Crymych v Lampeter
Crymych will be itching for action after last week’s postponement but know that Lampeter beat Haverfordwest 26-15 in their last match. The Preseli Men are looking to do well and have home advantage as a bonus.Crymych might be a little ring rusty but should still be sharp enough to win well.
Haverfordwest v Aberystwyth
Haverfordwest have suffered with injuries whilst Aberystwyth are full of confidence after beating Llanelli Wanderers 32-0 – but the Blues are bonny battlers at home so they can’t be written off.Sadly, I think Aber might still carry too much fire power in their talented back division and should win.
Division Four (West):
Pembroke v Brynamman
Pembroke have had a stop-start season whilst the opposition are currently second and beat Trimsaran 41-10 last weekend to keep up their good form.I really hope the Scarlets prove me wrong but I think Brynamman will sneak the verdict in a close encounter of the rugby kind!
Pembroke Dock Quins v Cwmgors
The Quins will be boosted by last Saturday’s excellent away victory and should be hot favourites at Bierspool against basement club Cwmgors. The visitors only lost 15-13 against Betws but will find Lenny Scourfield’s boys a different proposition. This should be a second success on the trot for the Quins.
Tycroes v Tenby United
Tycroes are eighth in the section table and lost 4-13 at league leaders Llandeilo last Saturday but are traditionally strong at home. Tenby United are playing well at the moment and look strong contenders for promotion if they can steer clear of promotion. The Seasiders to win and grab a bonus point if they play to their considerable potential.
Division Five (West) :
Cefneithin v Fishguard
Cefneithin are current league leaders but lost their unbeaten record in a 13-6 defeat at Pontyates in their last match so will be looking for a fresh start. Fishguard lost at home and will also be eager to get back to winning ways so this is a tough game to predict.I hope Alan Phillips’ men can do the business but I have to plump for a home win and hope Big Al phones at 5pm on Saturday to say I was wrong!
Milford Haven v Pontyates
Milford Haven looked at Llangwm and are now the only undefeated side in the section so they will be looking forward to this match – although Pontyates will be confident after last Saturday’s big win over Cefneithin. The Mariners will be too sharp for Ponty and too strong up front with skipper Carl Allen and Gareth Fawcett leading the way.
Uplands v St Davids
St Davids are looking to start firing on all cylinders and can target this match as one they can win against a side which as also struggled this season.Big Jack Dudley, Barry John and Co need to supply the kick-start but I still think home advantage will see the Uplands through.
