Rugby Preview for 6th December 2008

League rugby fixtures back after autumn internationals

The last weekend local clubs played I was chuffed to make it 15 forecasts on the trot exactly right when the Swalec Cup featured six local sides – and now we are back in league action (nine out of nine for me last time!)  I am hoping to show my detractors, like Milford Haven coach Alan McClelland, that I can be a good judge of rugby flesh.

National League Division One (West):

Whitland versus Maesteg

The Borderers are currently fourth in the table and Maesteg are eighth but the only difference is the winning of one more game so that could be deceptive.
Maesteg have experience aplenty but I think that Whitland will win, especially since they have home advantage.

Narberth versus Bonymaen

Bonymaen are in the bottom two of the section after winning only twice from eight games whilst host club Narberth have won four out of seven matches to secure a slightly disappointing current position of sixth in the table.
The Otters to win this one – and hopefully secure a bonus point.

National League Division Three (West):

Cardigan versus Pontyberem

This will be the toughest tussle that Cardigan have faced all season so far since Pontyberem have won all eight league fixtures and looked a class above those they have encountered - although Ponty will know that the Teifisiders are a very strong outfit, especially at home.
Pontyberem to maintain their 100% record but the Cardis will make them work really hard for victory.

Lampeter versus Haverfordwest

These teams are respectively ninth and seventh in the table so it looks close on paper but Lampeter are traditionally strong at home. Haverfordwest need to find a settled side but they have been hit by injuries and their results have suffered.
Lampeter should win but hopefully the Blues will secure a bonus point for their efforts.

Tumble versus Crymych

This looks a clear win for Crymych on paper because Tumble have won only once and suffered seven losses but they are renowned for doing well at home.
The Preseli Men must win this win – and they should, on form, win by a comfortable margin.

National League Division Four (West):

Hendy versus Pembroke Dock Harlequins

The Quins results are notoriously difficult to predict, especially in away games, because they have a number of players on the shut-down – and their results are similar since Hendy have won three matches and the Quins two.
I would hope the Quins snatch the verdict but my head tells me this will be a win for Hendy.

Pontarddulais versus Pembroke

Pontarddulais have only lost twice from seven starts whilst Pembroke are traditionally poor travellers – but are capable of beating any team in the section on their day.
The Bont to beat the Scarlets!

Tenby United versus Burry Port

This should be the banker bet for me since second-placed Tenby have won six out of seven games and opponents Burry Port are languishing in 11th place with a solitary win from six outings.
No doubt about this one - the Seasiders to win with something to spare.

National League Division Five (West):

Fishguard versus Aberaeron

Aberaeron are not quite the team they were last season whilst Fishguard were running into some good form before the break as they won four games in a row.
The Mid Wales outfit have won three times in seven starts but might find the Seagulls flying too high for them.

Llangwm versus Milford Haven

Local derbies are usually hard to predict but this one should be relatively simple because Llangwm have won once in seven games to languish in ninth position whilst the Mariners are undefeated with five wins and a draw. The game takes place at Pill Parks, however, which adds another touch of spice because the Wasps buzz best at home.
Milford Haven to win, with Alan McClelland coaching a victory against his former team!

St Davids versus Furnace

The Saints haven’t made the same start as last campaign and go into this match against Furnace looking for a second win after five defeats. Furnace are second in the table, having won five out of seven fixtures so far.
The Saints might well get burnt in this one and will do well to secure a bonus point.
