Kevin Bowen's hot stuffClose call in Colley Final

Kevin Bowen was the undoubted star of Fishguard Seconds’ first-ever appearance in an Alec Colley Final as the talented sporting all-rounder was ‘on fire’ with a superb 92 not out in the second innings to make hot favourites Cresselly 2nds bat for a second time after they had led by a massive 110 runs at tea time.
Kevin ‘scorched’ to his final tally with eight big sixes but he might have got burnt himself because in his pocket were his cigarettes and box of matches, which, had the ball struck his pocket area, could well have seared his ‘little bits’ and caused chaos. Luckily, Kevin remembered they were there after a couple of overs and asked the umpires to look after them, which they did. Kevin was all smiles about it after the match but perhaps it’s a message to our Kev that it is time he gave up the ciggies for good!

Wine tasting for ‘Old Codgers’

Whenever the Pembrokeshire over 45s football team go away they play to win but there is always a great deal of fun on the bus up and back, and particularly after the matches when the topics of conversation would take some believing.
When they won the Sporting Cup at Lilleshall there was some real celebrating done and two of the old codgers got into a discussion about being wine connoisseurs as one sipped his red wine and the other his white. Eventually a challenge was thrown out by the one we’ll call the white man to the one we’ll dub the red man about being able to recognise where his Chardonnay came from but almost the whole glass full had disappeared in short time as it was sipped with vigour.
So confident was our red man that he said he would buy a bottle of wine if he was wrong in saying where it had come from and he took a glass of water, swilled the H2O around his mouth, and announced he was sure it was Chilean.
Now, unbeknown to him the white man had already nobbled the waiter to disagree with whatever his choice was and said that it was Australian so our Red Man had to cough up for a whole bottle of wine, which he did with good grace. He still doesn’t know he was tricked but our research says that it didn’t really matter because the bottle had actually arrived from France!

Sore knees for Gary

If you see Gary Dawes limping along then please show a little sympathy for the tough as teak Hakin United manager because he has very sore knees. Were they obtained in an Astroturf tackle or sliding tackle in a sports hall training session? Not a bit of it!
Gary and his brother Martin are excellent builders (that’s a deserved free advert for the Dawes brothers!) and they were laying a new floor when something in the mix clearly upset our Gary and he sustained his sore knees, which were soon quite swollen and as red as any Welsh jersey could be.
But he has battled along and made sure that his young team are kept on their toes, whilst in future Gary will make sure he also stays on his toes – and keeps off his knees!

‘Face Book’ meeting arranged in France

They say that the Face Book web site is an innovative way of keeping in touch with old friends and this little story clearly shows that fact. Tim Parry, George Thomas and Darren John, all Llangwm lads, were travelling to France for a stag session and decided to use Face Book to contact former teacher Bruce Evans, who retired from teaching and now lives an idyllic life near the Charente/Dordogne border in the heart of rural France.
Bruce arranged for a Cornish friend of his named Simon to take them to a Top 14 rugby match where second-placed Bayonne played host to newly-promoted Mont de Marsan, currently in bottom place.
The lads had a great time but Bruce readily admits that when the clock was approaching midnight and they were entering yet another night club he quietly took his leave and went back to his lovely spot in the countryside – leaving Tim, George and Darren delighted to see ham and ensuring they had a rattling good time!
