Osian Wyn - all round sportsman
One of the best all round young sportsmen in the north of the county is undoubtedly Osian Wyn, a 16 year old from near Crymych who not only plays rugby, football and cricket but has taken up boxing and already had two bouts.
He kept wicket and batted for Crymych Cricket Club in the season just completed and helped the Mountain Men to the double of promotion from Division Four and the Alan Brown Cup, where he scored runs in the first innings and enjoyed watching older brother Osian win the man of the match award as they beat Manorbier at Whitland.
He’s played at Glandy Cross since he was ten years old under the watchful eyes of Tudor Harries and John Williams, bowling at the start and doing well before he took over the gloves and enjoying his new role behind the wicket. He had over 30 victims last season and has already scored five half centuries, with a top score of 55 not out against Carew, with a couple of appearances for Pembrokeshire with Colin Kaijaks as coach.
Rugby revels
Osian played his rugby for Crymych at under 16 level as a full back or centre, having started at Narberth but switching to Crymych where Robin Davies has looked after him well. They did really well as they remained undefeated throughout last campaign and completed another sporting double as they beat Haverfordwest in a hard-fought final by 6-3. He played at full back in that match alongside star players like winger Tomos Coleman, outside half Dyfan Dafydd and centre Ianto Griffiths. He also represented Pembrokeshire with Robin Davies and Steve O’Leary as coaches and scored three or four tries to show his potential.Football capers
But push Osian for a decision and he would readily admit that it is football which is his No 1 sport after playing for Clarbeston Road since he was eight under the guidance of Steve Brown. Last season was quite superb as Clarbie won the triple of Pembrokeshire League, Pembrokeshire Cup and West Wales Cup and Osian played in central defence, apart from an amazing last 20 minutes of extra time against Llangyfelach at Stebonheath, Llanelli, in the West Wales Cup Final where goalkeeper Luke Travis had to leave the field and Osian was drafted in between the sticks. He made three crucial saves as Clarbie edged through by 4-3 but says that there is no chance of him ever switching to being a keeper after that!Osian also played in the successful Clarbie team which won several trophies in Mid Wales at venues like Aberystwyth and Aberaeron, and has been playing for the Haverfordwest County academy team for some while. This new season will see him switch to the Bluebirds Under 19 side coached by Ronnie Beynon and he is already looking forward to the campaign with real relish.
Boxing bouts
Not content with that little lot, Osian started training at Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club, where Graham Brockway has been a great help. At first it was just to help his general fitness but he enjoyed the sparring and eventually made his debut in the ring at the Pater Hall, Pembroke Dock, in front of a very noisy home crowd who were cheering on his opponent, Kyle Perry, from Pembroke ABC. Ask Osian now and he would say that he was very nervous but he caused something of an upset as he stopped his opponent in the first 30 seconds with some crisp punching. His second bout was also in Pembroke Dock and on this occasion he suffered a stoppage himself against a more experienced opponent in Nicky Evans but he is not in the least dismayed and is already looking forward to further contests when the new season gets under way.
Family support
With all this sport going on there is inevitably a great deal of travelling and Osian is quick to sing the praises of his parents, Hefin and Gwenno Wyn, with older brother Rhydian a very keen sportsman and giving him lots of support.Osian is now at a time when he will have to make some decisions about his participation because he is going to need to specialise but talk to anyone wherever he has already played and they would say that he is a modest and approachable young man who is a credit to his family – and whatever sports he chooses to excel in, we wish Osian Wyn every success!
