‘The Doc’ stands tall in the last decade of batting in Pembrokeshire!
Cricket Stats from Paul and Janice Webb:
Any debate over the top batsman in Pembrokeshire League Cricket over the past 10 years has been knocked on the head in the latest statistics supplied by former County Club chairman Paul Webb and his wife Janice because Haverfordwest opener Simon Holliday is head and shoulders above some superb batsmen who have also made an impact on matches.
In that action-filled decade there are some surprise omissions of players who have been able to make a considerable impact but lacked ‘The Doc’s’ amazing consistency and the raw fact is this – IN THAT TIME HE HAS SCORED 2,536 RUNS MORE THAN HIS NEAREST RIVAL!
Runs galore – and outstanding averages
He achieved his 7,011 runs in 133 innings and with 49 not outs (22 more than Nick Koomen in second spot) his average has been an incredible 83.46, which again is 27.32 runs per game more than Dan Sutton, who only played 81 times but managed a splendid 56.14 average.
Holliday and Sutton also vied for the most centuries as the former achieved 18 and the latter 15 – but Mr Webb might point out that Sutton’s centuries came at an average of 5.6 matches whilst Holliday took 7.4 matches! In third place in this area of the stats was Adam Chandler, with six tons.
Consistency is classic!
The Haverfordwest opener also hit 46 half centuries, which means that he managed at least 50 every other time he strode to the crease! At the other end of this spectrum only Andrew Williams and Phil Cockburn (both St Ishmaels, have yet to achieve three figures – but their inclusion in the top 20 is a tribute to their consistency.
Outside of ‘The Doc’s’ figures there are also others who deserve a special mention in Nick Koomen (Neyland) and Peter Bradshaw (St Ishmaels), who were respectively second and third as reward for their consistency, with Koomen part of arguably the best team in that era and Bradshaw the obvious lynch-pin of all that Tish have achieved.
Highest scores – and team participation
There is also an interesting chance to focus on the highest scores achieved in division one, with Brad McDermott-Jenkins smashing the highest score of 174 and with Sutton in third place with 152 and – you’ve guessed it – the ubiquitous ‘Doc’ sandwiched in between with 173 not out!
On the team front, Haverfordwest, Neyland, Cresselly and St Ishmaels have three players apiece involved, whilst Carew are just behind with two, plus one apiece for Lawrenny and Whitland. The other four players have played for at least two clubs.
It all adds up to some very interesting reading from Paul and Janice, who are undisputed statistics king and queen of Pembrokeshire Cricket – and next week we aim to provide a similar look at the bowling figures to see whether it is the fast bowlers or the canny slow bowlers who have ruled the roost!
