We are delighted to present our ‘Star of the Month’ award for May to David Hughes, who doubles up as chairman and commercial director of Haverfordwest County AFC and on most days, even now that the football season is over, can be found doing something at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
 
 David has been chairman of The Bluebirds for three seasons, after an earlier spell at the helm some time ago – and he has been commercial director, with responsibility of ensuring that the finances at the club make it a viable proposition, for double that time.
 
He could also lay claim to being one of Haverfordwest County’s best supporters because he not only attends the vast majority of home games but travels along the M4 corridor to away games as far afield as Undy, Risca, Caerleon, Cwmbran, Caldicot and Monmouth (all in Gwent), Ton Pentre and Cambrian & Clydach in the Rhondda Valley, and shorter treks to places like Port Talbot, Goytre United, Afan Lido and Penybont, all necessitating a 120-mile round trip!
 
It is typical that David agreed to accept our award on behalf of his industrious colleagues but there is no doubt that he is the leader of things at Haverfordwest County, a view enforced by current co-manager Chris O’Sullivan as he told us,
 
“It is a pleasure to work with David as a player and manager in providing a team worthy of the club and he is held in high regard by myself, Sean Cresser, Micky Ellis and Ryan Evans as coaches, plus all the players who know how much work he puts in on their behalf."
 
It is a view echoed by former boss Wayne Jones, now with Aberystwyth.
“I really enjoyed my time at the Conygar Bridge Meadow and I always felt that I could rely on David because he was always honest in his dealings with me and I think this award is very appropriate for him.”
 
We could pay David Hughes no higher praise than these experienced football managers have done and are delighted to recognise all that he has done in The Bluebirds’ cause.
