Round 3 of the Pembrokeshire Junior Cricket League (U11 North) produced another thrilling fixture between Cresselly U11s (274-2) and Hook U11s (312-4) with the later edging out a spirited young Cresselly team. 
With the away skipper Oscar Willington winning the toss and electing to bat first, he really set the tone with a huge six in the first over on his way to a classy, quick-fire 17 runs, supported nicely by Callum Nutty (11 runs) nudging the ball around for his highest score of the season. With Hook ticking the scoreboard over frequently, credit must go to the Cresselly bowling duo of James Harries (1-10) and Will Morgan (2-12) who between them managed a 'team hat-trick' during the end of the 5th and start of 6th over - clean bowling the Hook batsmen with some disciplined line and length deliveries. 
Dillon James (13 runs) was again in fine form, choosing his shots wisely with some well placed boundaries thrown in for good measure. Tyler James (1-14) bowled well, managing to pick up a wicket for his efforts. This was the calm before the storm - with Rhys Phelps now at the crease and keen to make use of the perfect batting conditions, he did so with excellent technical application en-route to a faultless 32 runs, including 5 fours and 1 six (almost clearing the hedge) ensuring Hook posted a very decent total of 312-4.  
The Cresselly reply was noteworthy, demonstrating excellent resistance to some fast and furious bowling from Oscar Willington and Rhys Phelps (0-6) with Willington picking up 1-6 from his pacey 2 overs. Owen Grieve (17 runs) and Rhys Lewis (13 runs) led the way for the home batsmen with well executed shots, defending their wicket when required and punishing the wide balls to the boundary.  Out of the remaining Hook bowlers, only Jack Thomas managed to break the resistance, taking 1-14 from his allotted 2 overs. Other notable batting performances came from Rhys Barnes (10 runs) and Tyler James (10 runs) who both defended their wicket well, eventually coming up short of the required 313 to win the game. 
It should be mentioned that both teams fielded tremendously well on a very fast outfield on a blustery and cold June evening (perfect weather for stopping or catching a hard cricket ball). 
Hook made that 3 from 3 and will look to build on their fine start to the season against Bosherston/Stackpole next week. Stefan Owen can be proud of his young Cresselly team and they are certainly ones to watch for the future.

Cresselly 69 for 6 lost to Hook 141 for 0 by 72 runs

These two young teams put on an excellent display of cricket in a match played in the true spirit of the game. Hook batted first and amassed a big total but not for a committed effort from the Cresselly players. The bowling of Cerys Jenkins 0 for 13, Nathan Harrison 0 for 9 and Joseph Davies 0 for 10 in particular was really good. The bowlers were backed up with some excellent fielding, Katie Macreeth making a number of excellent stops. Jessica Lewis did a really good job behind the wicket.

For Hook openers Jack Phillips (25 retired) and Oscar Willington (30 retired) led the way with a stand of 60 including 3 boundaries each and a big six for Oscar. Rhys Phelps (27 retired) hit some excellent boundaries in his innings. Dillon James (23 not out) and Charlie Kelly (6 not out) also batted very well.

In reply Cresselly showed real determination and good technique to frustrate the Hook bowlers and steadily build a decent score. Again the openers did a great job. Joseph Davies (27 retired) played several gorgeous straight drives to the boundary in an excellent innings. Opening partner Cerys Jenkins scored 7 runs but batted much better than her score suggests. Cerys played with admirable patience and solid technique, as did Nathan Harrison who notched an excellent 14 not out including 3 boundaries. Jessica Lewis also showed real ability in the middle order.

For Hook, everyone bowled a good line and length backed up by a good fielding performance, typified by excellent catches from both Jack Phillips and Charlie Kelly. It was Troy Goodridge who did the early damage with a double wicket maiden in his 2 for 12 spell. Toby Price picked up 1 for 0 bowling two maidens. Then Jack Phillips came on late in the innings to pick up an impressive 3 for 0 in his single over.
