Haverfordwest aims high in inclusive zone basketball finals

The inclusive zone basketball (IZB) team at Haverfordwest High VC School has been praised after coming runners-up in the Wales National IZB finals for the second consecutive year.

The sport of IZB is a cross between basketball and wheelchair basketball, with teams of four; two players in wheelchairs and two running players.

Tough matches in Cardiff . . .

The Welsh finals were held in Cardiff on 7th March and Haverfordwest beat three teams; Woodlands Merthyr (16 -2), Aberteifi 2 (14 -6), and Aberteifi 1 (14-4), before losing to Caerleon 8-4.

Dan Bellis, Active Young People (AYP) Officer, congratulated the team for their excellent performance and thanked the coach Nicola Hayton for training the team to a high standard and Adele Bevan who helped on the day; both Sport Pembrokeshire Young Ambassadors.

. . . After previous success in Pembrokeshire

The Cardiff finals followed a Pembrokeshire Schools IZB competition won by Haverfordwest High School in February.

Five schools - Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Ysgol y Preseli, Portfield School, Greenhill School and Haverfordwest High School - participated in the round robin competition. Haverfordwest High were the outright winners, winning all five matches on the day.

The games were refereed by Jack Woods, coach at Pembrokeshire Hurricanes wheelchair basketball club, who was assisted by Nicola Hayton.
