Lee Trundle's two headers helps Haverfordwest County close the gap on leaders Penybont

 

Ton Pentre 0 – Haverfordwest County 4

Promotion-chasing Haverfordwest County impressively secured their third away win in a row as they easily brushed aside Ton Pentre in an entertaining tussle under lights at Ynys Park on Friday evening.

This was Haverfordwest County’s third away win in a row, and they have won four in total in December, and leaders Penybont dropped points tonight as they drew 2-2 at Briton Ferry Llansawel.

This is turning into an intriguing race for the title. Wayne Jones’ team are just two points behind Penybont, but have played one more game.

The Bluebirds’ goal scorers were Lee Trundle with a brace, skipper Sean Pemberton, and Ben Fawcett.

Trundle uses his head

The visitors opened the scoring in the fourth minute; Danny Williams’ corner was met at the far post by a Lee Trundle header.

Earlier Williams curled a shot that Fleming saved - and a minute later Fawcett struck a low drive through a sea of bodies that Fleming blocked.

The Bulldogs also went close to scoring, Josh Maksimovic ball over the top fell to Robbie Thomas who controlled and crossed for Jordan Islip who headed on target only for Hall to save.

Danny Williams was close to adding a second as he latched onto an intelligent Trundle through ball.

Kieran Bassett did just enough to put off Fawcett who teed-up a shot, and minutes later Elliot Scotcher fired a shot over Fleming’s crossbar as the visitors pressed for a second goal.

Fleming pulled off a good save to deny Scotcher with an edge of the area free kick.

Fawcett was fouled cynically and from the resulting free kick by Scotcher, skipper Pemberton put his header just wide of Fleming’s post.
 

Pemberton scores again

However, in the 27^th minute the Bluebirds extended the lead with their second goal of the game. The Bulldogs failed to clear the danger inside the box and Pemberton cleverly turns the ball into the back of the net.

Trundle should have added a third, after good work by Danny Williams sees the ball drop for the 42 year old, but the striker’s left foot volley whistles past the right-hand post.

Lee Price struck a shot from distance for the Bulldogs which flew past Hall’s post.

Fawcett is on target

In the 37th minute the visitors added a third goal. The Bulldogs’ defence was caught napping as Fawcett slides the ball in the net.

Aiden Chappell-Smith almost pulled one back immediately for the Bulldogs as he darts into the box, but his tame shot into the corner is brilliantly saved by Hall.

The homesters continued to press and an acrobatic overhead kick by Alex Davies from outside the box; drew a good save from Hall.

Wayne Jones’ Bluebirds were good value for their three-goal cushion at half time, but they could not afford to sit on their laurels in the second period.

Shortly after the break and Trundle fired a left foot shot inches wide, at the other end Nicky Jones’ cross in the box caused confusion in the box, but keeper Hall came to the rescue.

In the driving seat

In the 58^th minute the Bluebirds grabbed their fourth of the game. Danny Williams’ fierce shot is blocked for a corner. Scotcher’s corner is met with an excellent Trundle header for his second goal of the match; it put the visitors in the driving seat.

In the 64^th minute Jack Wilson replaced Danny Williams for the Bluebirds.

Fawcett was unlucky not to add a fifth as Fleming saved defender Robbie Thomas’ blushes. Then Trundle held off a strong challenge to get his shot away which flew in the side-netting.

Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Hall pulled off a stunning late save to deny Lee Price from close range, but more importanly ensured the visitors kept another impressive clean sheet.
