The Silkmen use their heads to beat poor Bluebirds

Jack Wilson struck the post at Flint

JD Cymru Premier –Conference Play-off:

Flint Town United 2 - Haverfordwest County 0

Flint Town United gained a comfortable two-goal victory over a tired looking Haverfordwest County outfit at Essity Stadium.

In previous matches between the two teams, each had one won and drawn one, but it was The Silkmen who deservedly came out on top- in this clash in north Wales this time.

Goals either side of half time by Josh Amis and Alex Jones sealed the all-important victory.

Wilson struck post

Minutes before the hosts took the lead in the 37th minute, it was the visitors who could have easily taken the lead when Jack Wilson struck the outside of the post as the teenager found himself with a one-on-one with keeper Jon Rushton.

With the very next attack it was The Silkmen who broke the deadlock, Amis showed good movement to get in front of Wojciech Gajda, glanced home a driven cross.

Silkmen manager Neil Gibson would have felt happy his men had taken a one-goal cushion at the break, following a scrappy first half.

Silkmen double lead

Three minutes after the break the hosts doubled the lead, a free kick in the box saw Alex Jones header into the empty net, that crucial goal ended the visitors’ chances of nicking a much-needed win.

Haverfordwest County manager was bitterly disappointed with the result, plus since the split the Bluebirds have taken just four points from a possible 21.

Disappointed boss

“No excuses but the lads looked jaded out there today,” said Haverfordwest County manager Wayne Jones.

“Winning games at this level can be fine margins, had Jack (Wilson) scored before they did then it could have given us the belief we needed to go on and claim a much-needed win.

“We have not played to the level we should be at in the second half of this season, I put it down to lack of experience by some players who are still finding their feet.

“The oldest guy in the team skipper Sean Pemberton was comfortably man of the match again. The rest need to take a leaf out of his book because he was outstanding.”

Haverfordwest County only have three games left to play this season, on Tuesday evening, 24th May, they travel to Park Avenue to face Aberystwyth Town, then have Newtown and Cefn Druids both home.
