Lloyd Hughes was the toast of his Haverfordwest County under-19 team-mates after scoring a superb late cup winner against Bridgend Street at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.

As this hard-fought cup tie was heading for extra-time, up popped super sub Hughes who lashed home the only goal of the match, three minutes from full time.

Laurie Haworth danced past a couple of Street defenders before unselfishly squaring the ball to Hughes, who struck a first time effort into the roof of the net.

Manager Steve Batty was delighted that his team won and kept a clean sheet against a very good team based from the Splott area of Cardiff.

Bluebirds’ keeper Dan Evans cut out a number of chances by intercepting through balls and clearing his lines. The defence consisting of Dan Harding, Joseph Williams, Owen Coombs and Fraser James snuffed out the visiting strike partnership of Osian Actie and Jonathan Taylor.

Industrious

Mark Davies and skipper Joe Brill were industrious in the middle of midfield for the young Bluebirds and Haworth worked hard on the left touchline as did his right sided midfielder Dafydd Bevan.

Aidan Rainbow and Sean O’Neil worked tirelessly up front for the young Bluebirds against a strong Bridgend Street back four consisting of Callum Bird, skipper Jacob Rees, Ben Henderson and Nick Berry.

Haworth scuffed a shot just wide and Rainbow failed to get his shot away when he entered the 18-yard box. At the other end Harry Burge’s shot-cum-cross was tipped away for a corner by Evans.

Superb winner

The second half was an even affair with both sides not creating any clear cut scoring opportunities, but in the 87th minute Hughes struck a superb winner to win the tie.

The Bluebirds have reached the McWhirter League Cup third round and are away against Cwmbran Celtic.
