Success for Disability Sports Festival
A festival showcasing the range of sports available in Pembrokeshire suitable for children or adults with a disability was a fantastic success as the insport Series event, held at Pembroke Leisure Centre on 20th June, attracted more than 250 people – the biggest attendance so far.
Michelle Daltry from Disability Sport Wales (DSW) said the atmosphere was ‘electric’ and she was pleased it was so well supported by local and regional clubs.
”I was delighted to see so many schools attending, some bringing a whole class when they may have only had one individual with an impairment,” she said.
Terrific range of activities to try out
The event was organised by Pembrokeshire County Council in partnership with Snowdrop Independent Living, Disability Sport Wales, and Get Out Get Active (GOGA).
Taster sessions were given by the Scarlets Wheelchair Rugby, Welsh Rugby Union Tag Rugby, Pembrokeshire Hurricanes Wheelchair Basketball, FF Dance Academy, and Tenderfoots Boccia & New Age Kurling.
Also offering sessions were Wisemans Bridge and Fishguard and Jemima Rowing, Table Cricket (Cricket Wales), Table Tennis Wales, Bike Mobility, Strength Academy Wales Power Lifting, and Wales Squash.
Athletics, Balance Bikes, Cricket and Golf sessions were delivered by Sport Pembrokeshire, and Snowdrop Independent Living also had demonstrations of their off-road trikes.
Angela was delighted
Angela Miles, Disability Sports Development Officer for Pembrokeshire County Council, said how great it was to be able to present what is on offer in Pembrokeshire for children and adults to enable them to participate in physical activity.
“I’d also like to thank all the clubs for coming and giving their time, and a big thank you to Snowdrop Independent Living for their ongoing support to the event,” she said.
Also attending on the day were Welsh rugby players Dan Biggar and Dan Lydiate, representing Oil for Wales, who eagerly participated in many of the activities.
“It was fantastic to have Dan Bigger and Dan Lydiate with us as well, taking part in the events alongside the children and adults and even rowing against each other in the racing urgs,” said Angela.
