Fishguard Sports AFC’s exciting new development at Tregroes, on the outskirts of the town, was a hive of activity recently as the Sports’ vice-chairman Mathew ‘Minty’ Lamb and secretary Steve Jones welcomed Ben Field and his Sports welcome Sport Pembrokeshirestaff from Sport Pembrokeshire for a day pf decorating the new changing rooms and the fences around the ground.

The initiative was thought up Ben Field at his headquarters in County Hall and a number of his staff voluntarily turned out in their painting gear, with their brushes and rollers, with Angela Miles and Romilly Colville staining the fence posts, despite the cold breeze.

The fellers, including Ben, Alan Jones, Matthew Freeman, Dan Bellis, Barry John, Wyndham Williams, Barry John, Elgan Vittle and others using their rollers to good effect as they made the two changing rooms and showers, committee room, kitchen and disability changing room look spick and span.

“We are delighted to be here,” said Ben Field, “and next year we will try and help another club by offering physical help in the same way.

“We chose Fishguard Sports in recognition of their commitment to the community, not only with football for men and juniors but also for their work with a disability team and girls’ football, where they already have 73 members in training.”

'Minty' is delighted by support

“We are delighted with the way the pitch is going,” Mathew Lamb told us, “we have junior matches taking place here as our priority before we eventually move, lock stock and barrel from St Mary’s Field.

“The leaders of our club over 20 years ago, like John Luke, John Evans and the rest who had the foresight to buy this field will be delighted by how it has developed in the past three years, although they might find it hard to recognise from those days because the sloping farm field of over four acres in now perfectly level, well-drained and almost ready to promote football in Fishguard for the foreseeable future.”

There also plans afoot to extend the playing area on the far side so that it will accommodate two full-size pitches and a cricket square, to further aid sport in the town.

The club is well looked after by its officers, with Owen Duggan and ‘Minty’ as respective chairman and vice-chairman, supported by Steve Jones, and Nigel Davies (Treasurer) at the helm.

“We acquired our excellent portakabin from Portfield School,” said Lamb, “and our boilers came as a gift from Clarbeston Road AFC, with Huw Bevan making the splendidly generous offer on their behalf.

Members play their part too

“The members have also played a big part, with Gary Delaney and Gareth Thomas standing out with such a huge effort that I shudder to think how much they have saved us in labour costs.

“We needed new goalposts and the special transportable ones we wanted are costly so 27 of us, including six of our girls, all climbed Snowdon and we raised £2,200 – Gary Hall and Andrew Hopkin also took their juniors for a fun run right around Llys y Fran Reservoir and raised a magnificent £500 so that we almost have enough money for our goalposts!

“This offer to help from Ben Field has been a real boost and I would also like especially to thank Alan Jones, Angela Miles, Dan Bellis and Matthew Freeman for being available for advice throughout our efforts.”
