Rooks comfortably win match of the round clash

 
The weather stayed fair in Pembrokeshire so that cricket could once again get under way, albeit in a limited fashion as the Harrison-Allen Bowl, the Blue Riband event in terms of cup matches, was played on a Saturday for the first time in its long history.
 
The match of the day featured two of the top teams from the first division in Whitland and Carew, both previous winners in the last decade but after restricting The Rooks to a good but not brilliant total, Whitland lost FOUR wickets chasing their first run and it turned into an easy win for the visitors.
 
There were also wins for Neyland, St Ishmaels, Burton, Llangwm and Narberth and they will join the ten other teams who had ties in the last-16 round next Saturday!

Davies stars as Burton battle through

 

Burton (111 for 8) beat Pembroke Dock (77 all out) by 34 runs

Talented teenager James Davies played a key role in Burton’s relatively comfortable win over Pembroke Dock at Oatfield Park as he top scored with 39 excellent runs before suffering an unlucky run out and then chipped in with two wickets to help Matthew Webb break the back of The Dock Response.
 
Asked to bat first, Burton had suffered an early set-back when Toby Hayman was well caught by Dock skipper Scott Griffiths behind the wicket off Nick Daley’s bowling and opening partner Jon Venables soon followed, removed by Bill Wood from a Tom Grimwade catch after the same fielder had downed an easier chance.
 
But then James Davies and Morgan Scale shared a stand of 63 vital runs before Scale’s strong straight drive was deflected back onto Davies stumps with the batsman stranded out of the crease, giving bowler Jamie White a measure of revenge since he had dropped Davies from another hard-hit straight drive!
Scale eventually departed for a well-compiled 27 but White (2 for 18), Nick Daley (2 for 21) and Rob Hearne (2 for 24) kept things fairly tight and it was left to Matthew Davies to add a late 10 not out for the homesters which saw having to settle for 111 for 8
 

The Dock soon find themselves in deep trouble

 
But The Dock were soon in trouble as they lurched from 15 without loss to 16 for 4 as Matthew Webb grabbed two wickets in as many balls and James Davies shifted danger men Jake Davies and Billy Wood.
 
Skipper Scott Griffiths did manage 29 before he was neatly stumped by Iestyn Evans off Morgan Scale’s canny slow stuff and from then on only Andrew Hillier-Wood (10) managed double figures.
 
Scale finished with 2 for 14 alongside Dan Llewellyn (2 for 8), Luke Hayman (1 for 15) and Matthew Davies (1 for 0) as The Dock succumbed to the pressure – and now Burton travel to Pembroke for round two!
 
 





 

Jenkins and Davies destroy Whitland hopes

 

Whitland (84 all out) lost to Carew (130 for 7) by 46 runs

Four overs of mayhem at the start of the Whitland innings saw Whitland’s hopes smashed into rubble as Sion Jenkins bowled danger men Jonathan Thomas and Geraint Jones in his first over and Rhys Davies bowled Jack Bowen and trapped Kevin Pearce LBW so that after four overs chasing 131 to win their tally stood at an unreal four wickets for just a single!
 
Carew had also suffered an early set-back when they lost Luke Hicks to a return catch by Wayne Howells but Tim Hicks and Ian Sefton advanced the score from 16 to 71 with some solid striking of anything loose and good running between the wickets.
 
Hicks blasted an excellent 52 (three fours and two sixes) before he finally fell and Sefton was eventually run out for 26 (two fours and a six), as was Rhys Davies after he had scored 17 and from there it was a scramble to score as many as possible, with Gareth Lewis finishing things off with a six in the final over to take Carew to 130 for 7 – not normally a massive score but certainly a challenging one in the circumstances.
 

Challenging total becomes an awful reality

 
And just how challenging it was became reality because after four shared overs Sion Jenkins had a double-wicket maiden and Rhys Davies’ analysis stood at 2 for 1!
 
Steff James stood strong for his 32 and there was a measure of support from skipper Matthew Davies (13) and Dan Newton (16) but Sion Jenkins finished with splendid figures of 3 for 16 from his six overs he removed Davies with the aid of a Tim Hicks’ catch and then canny spinner Ceri Brace joined the fray to grab 4 for 31 as Whitland inevitably had to go for broke.
 
Shaun Whitfield also picked up 1 for 25 as Whitland were shot out for only 84 in 20 overs – and Carew’s reward is a mouth-watering home tie next week to Cresselly!
 
 
 
 

Tish beat The Seasiders in hard-fought battle

 

Saundersfoot (120 for 8) lost to St Ishmaels (121 for 7) by three wickets

St Ishmaels put their greater experience at the top level to ease home by just three wickets in a hard-fought battle after they had restricted The Seasiders to a solid, but not unbeatable score in their allotted 22 overs, and reached their target with three wickets and three balls left.
 
Put in to bat, Nick Cope led their batting after he came in at No 3, following the dismissal of Danny Brace for 13, including a big six: joining Danny Caine in a stand of 41 before the opener departed for 14 (two fours).
 
Cope struck three fours and two sixes in his 33 before he became Jonathan Pawlett’s second victim and Brennan Devonald also bowled outstandingly well for Tish as he followed Brace’s early scalp with more key wickets in Tom Mansbridge (20) and James Caine (15, including three boundaries), to finish with 3 for 31 in his six overs.

Andrew Pawlett bowled a typically tight spin spell of six overs and two maidens whilst conceding only 24 runs and Jonathan Pawlett ended up with 4 for 33 to restrict The Seasiders to their 120 for 8.
 
Tish suffered a very early set-back as they opened with twins Harry and Jack Nicholas and the former was dismissed by Sam Franklin for a duck. But Jack (20) and Brennan Devonald (14) steadied the Tish ship before skipper Phil Cockburn scored a classy 34 which was vital in the circumstances, including three fours.
 
Dan Howells also chipped in with 19 and although there was something of a stutter towards the end as John Mansbridge claimed 3 for 14 it was Sean Williams and Andrew Pawlett who held their nerve to seal success and take Tish to an intriguing tussle at Laugharne next weekend.
 
 
 

Neyland’s long journey rewarded with easy win

 

Llechryd (83 for 9) lost to Neyland (84 for 2) by 8 wickets

Openers Nick Koomen and Patrick Bellerby ensured there were no hiccups for Neyland as their stand of 65 set the visitors up for an 8 wicket win at Llechryd.

The home side finished 83-9 from their 22 overs, with opener Kevin Evans top scoring with three fours in his 23. Jonny Lewis also made a steady 15 and Thomas Davies (9), Graham Keen (8) and Andrew Davies (10) all got starts – but the hosts were never allowed to settle against a typically disciplined Neyland attack.
Spinners Andrew Miller (3-22) and Scott Jones (3-19) led the way and Brad McDermott-Jenkins (2-12), on his competitive debut for the club, also impressed.

Koomen and Bellerby then got going with frequent boundaries and the former reached 21 (three fours) before giving a return catch to Lewis (1-8), while Bellerby cracked eight fours and a six before falling in the same manner to Evans (1-28).

It was Nathan Banner (3 not out) and McDermott-Jenkins (4 not out) who then completed the formalities, as Neyland set up a home tie with Herbie in Round Two.

Narberth pace men too hot for Johnston

 

Narberth (37 for 1) beat Llangwm (36 all out) by 9 wickets

A hat trick for Ben Quartermaine was the highlight as Narberth rolled over 10-man Johnston in their Harrison-Allen Bowl first round match.

He removed Steve James, Josh Hicks, and Hazif Farooq in successive balls as the visitors slumped to 14-4, and they never recovered as they went on to be dismissed for 36 - before the hosts wrapped up a quick nine wicket win.

Johnston elected to bat and had Geno Cleal (4) clean bowled by Loui Davies early on – and No 3 James made 5 before Quartermaine skittled him and the two batsman that followed for golden ducks to seal figures of 3-5 in three overs.

It was veteran opener John Summons who was left standing with 6 not out while tail ender Curtis Hicks hit two boundaries in a defiant knock of 12, but alongside Quartermaine and Davies (1-10) it was Ben Hughes (2-12), and Matthew (1-6) and David Johns (1-3) who ensured the innings was wrapped up in 14.2 overs.
Had Luff and Richie Adams then shared an opening stand of 29 in the reply before the latter was bowled by Mark Hicks for 7 – but Luff finished 17 not out (two fours) and was joined by Mick Haltam (6 not out) in finishing the job inside 8 overs.

The game was umpired by Jonathan Willington, who to his credit, waived his match fee in a move that drew praise from both teams.

 

Noah and Joe blitz Hundleton batsmen

 

Hundleton (50 all out) lost to Llangwm (54 for 1) by 9 wickets

The bowling of Noah Davies ensured there was little chance of Division 5 side Hundleton pulling off a shock win over Llangwm.

Davies took figures of 6-10 in his six overs, which included three maidens, helping to restrict the home side to 50 all out.

One of his victims was opener Paul Fox who actually reached 14 after starting with a bang and three early boundaries, but the only other scorer in double figures was No 10 Stuart Midgley, who also made 14 (two fours) while Will Lockyer finished 9 not out.

Joe Phillips (3-11) also did damage with the ball while Ollie Davies took the other wicket – and Llangwm then wasted little time in their reply.

That was despite losing opener Huw Brock (1) to Steffan Williams (1-14) early on – but Joseph Kiff cracked four sixes and a four en route to 33 not out.

No 3 David Lewis also hit two fours in his 11 not out, as Llangwm set up a local derby away to Haverfordwest in Round 2.

Seasiders stroll to victory as veterans play well

 

Saundersfoot 2nds (99 for 2) beat Burton 2nds (95 for 9)

It was the old timers of Saundersfoot who sent their second team into the second round of the Alec Colley Cup as they eased home against their counterparts from Burton.
 
Chasing a Burton tally of 95 for 9 their top scorer was Steve Cook (41 not out), ably assisted by Paul Mansbridge (21) and former Tenby United rugby player now turned cricketer Gareth Edwards (13) as Johnny Scale (1 for 22) and A John (1 for 27) were the only Burton wicket takers.
 
Earlier in the match, Welsh over 50s player Paul Webb led the Burton batting with 26, followed by Scale (23) and Ross Edwards (16 not out) – but Kevin Sykes showed what an asset he is to The Seasiders’ bowling attack with an excellent 4 for 11 haul alongside Nav and Aram Kawale, with respective figures of 3 for 27 and 1 for 9.
 
Saundersfoot will now entertain Whitland in the second round on Saturday.
