Otters mauled at Pontypool Park

Pontypool 34 - Narberth 3

Rugby Reports 27th September 2014
Narberth’s promising start to the new campaign received a nasty jolt as they travelled to Pontypool Park and came away with a 34-3 defeat as they were unable to match Pontypool up front and paid the inevitable price.

The former top-class club led 13-3 at half time and added 21 unanswered points after the interval to leap-frog over Narberth in the section table.

Pontypool opened the scoring with a penalty from outside half Tom Hancock and he doubled the lead before slotting the conversion of Pooler’s opening try by winger Rhodri Usher.

Narberth had a few half chances but all they could muster near the break was a penalty by outside half Ianto Griffiths.

But there was to be no further points for the Otters and Pontypool added tries by centres Joe Blackmore and Mark Chorley (2) to have a bonus point for scoring four tries, leaving Narberth to make the long journey home with their first defeat of the campaign in a very tough section.

Ianto Griffiths - scored Narberth's only three points

Swalec Plate:

Borderers bow out of Swalec Plate

Llangennech 37 - Whitland 28

Rugby Reports 27th September 2014
Whitland bowed out of the Swalec Plate competition as they went down to defeat at Llangennech despite a late fight-back which saw them score 22 points without replay after the home side had led 37-6.

Llangennech are currently fourth in the same section as the Borderers but it was the visitors who made the better start when Johnny Thomas and Chris Moore shared penalties but Whitland outside half Thomas added his second kick on target.

But the Llangennech pack was on top despite some yeoman work by Jack Mason and full back Moore rounded off a pre-planned move to slice through to the posts, only for Whitland winger James Criddle to charge down the conversion attempt.

Jamie Herbert also claimed a try for Llangennech to go with a second Moore penalty which put the homesters ahead by 16-6 at half time.

Whitland continued to find it hard going up front in the second period and Llangennech added tries by wingers Tom Barnes and Rhys Davies, plus replacement winger Liam Hutchings, all converted by Moore.

The Borderers also had hooker Daniel Evans red-carded but with Mason and skipper Marc Jones leading the way that did well to come back after Jonathan Thomas had landed his third penalty. Jones and mason scored tries alongside Criddle, two converted by Thomas, but there was to be no fairy-tale ending as the Borderers simply ran out of time!

Jack Mason - played really well for Whitland in the back row

Cardis claim season’s first success

Cardigan 50 - Pembroke 12

Rugby Reports 27th September 2014

Cardigan followed three successive league defeats with this morale-boosting win over a Pembroke side who at least deserve credit for fulfilling their obligation in playing the game and giving it their best.

But without several key players the Scarlets were unable to match the Teifisiders’ intensity and were adrift by 33-0 at the interval and were another seven points further behind before their efforts were finally rewarded with good tries from inside centre Gianluca Tremarco and outside half Rhys Johns, one of them converted by Shaun Dalling.

Left winger Dorian Butler was the executioner in chief for the Cardis as he raced over for three tries in that first-half blitz alongside others from hooker Aled Meredith and scrum half Marcus Castle, four of them converted by No 10 Llyr Tobias.

Butler added his fourth try after the interval and also joining him on the try sheet were outside centre Aaron Tomkinson and full back Alun Jenkins, whilst Tobias completed a good day with another conversion.

Cardigan’s traditional man of the match award was shared by Marcus Castle, Alun Jenkins and Dorian Butler and they now make progress to the latter stages of the competition as a result!
