Narberth 19 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 22

Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC U16's continued with their run of good form over the weekend after travelling to Narberth to face last year’s Pembrokeshire Cup Champions in an U16's league game, since  the Quins’ was pitch out of action

In the heavy conditions, Quins coaches Keith Boswell and Gareth Lewis moved the burley midfield partnership of Hywel Baker and Arron Boswell into the back row, which proved decisive, as the powerful Quins forwards dominated throughout, especially in driving and rucking.

Quins score first but young Otters fight back

The forwards were well marshalled by scrum half Ollie Lewis, who commanded the break down and scrum, causing his opposite number all sorts of problems. The Quins were first to score with some powerful surges by the pack.

Narberth rallied well and put in some good attack phases, only to be met by some stout Quins defence, with Jordan Palmer and Ben Lascelles working hard in the midfield. Narberth attacked using some of their strike runners, with Ryan Conbeer, Jack Tucker and Kemsley Mathias always in the thick of it.

But with the Quins’ pack in total control it wasn't long before they crossed the line to make it 10 - 0. Narberth responded well and worked the ball wide to score, with the conversion duly slotted the scores stood 10 - 7 at half time

Second half just as competitive

The Quins restarted and took the game to Narberth and once again it was great power work by the Quins forwards which saw a pick and drive with a third score to the Quins. Ieuan Jenkins used his fantastic boot to great effect and slotted the conversion.

Play exchanged hands on several occasions with both sides battling it out in the boggy conditions, and it was great to see a large and vocal crowd of supporters cheering everyone on.

The Quins had strong surges from Tommy Clarkson, Joe Gray, Tom Watson and they soon found themselves camped inside the Narberth 22. Line out jumpers Jordan Davies and Tom Rowe took the spoils in the lineout battle with some pin point accuracy from hooker and captain Tom Barrass, who was frustrated not to be allowed to show off his scrummaging skills as Narberth opted to go uncontested at the scrums.

Quins use driving mauls to good effect but Narberth respond well

The Quins used the driving lineout to good effect and moved the ball out to No 10 Aaron Cookson, who made some ground before being well tackled by the Narberth midfield. The Quins back row were quick to support with Mathew Washbourne and the rest of the forwards close behind drove over to score an unconverted try.

Narberth attacked well and a better 10 minutes were they managed to hold onto possession and used the boot to great effect with Jac Watters putting in a neat cross field kick which was collected out wide and Narberth scooted over to score.

Narberth now had their tails up and started to put some pressure on the Quins, but some good defence by Gareth James, and Leighton Hart kept the Narberth surges at bay.

Narberth managed a late score by pacy winger Ryan Conbeer which was converted making the final score 22-19 to the Quins.

This was a great game by both teams, which was well refereed by Charley Watts, who had already refereed two games on Saturday before this well fought under16's battle.
