 Pennar are the penalty kings!
After 120 minutes of action-packed football in front of a large, vociferous crowd at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium, it was Pennar Thirds’ penalty prowess which earned them victory over Neyland 2nds in a cracking game of football.

The Robins scored from all four penalties taken by Patrick McDonagh, Carl John, Paul Sly and Rhys Lucas and didn’t need their fifth spot kick because only Niall Day was successful for the Nomads as Billy Drinkwater saved one and the other hit the upright!

They had met twice already in the league and both won 2-1 at home so this was always going to be a close cash between teams situated eighth and ninth in the section table - and that is just the way it turned out.

Cup football at its best

This was cup football at its best and a great advertisement for fourth division football, with neither side willing to give an inch in a match that was well refereed by Ben Williams, assisted by Gareth Elliott and Andrew Hopkin.

It was the Robins who got the game off to a flying start as a long ball over the top allowed teenager Patrick McDonagh to fire in the opening goal with a low left-foot drive.

McDonagh had a second chance which he put wide and Michael Groves was denied by Neyland keeper Marlon Hutchings in a good period for the Robins.

But Neyland fought back as Andrew Davies went close with a header, Shane Phillips fired over the bar and Smith drove his penalty chance straight into the midriff of Robins’ keeper Billy Drinkwater.

The Nomads were made to pay for these chances missed when Harry Rowlands added the Robins’ second goal to give them a clear lead at half time.

Nomads in fight-back

But Neyland fought back with a good goal from a Smith lob and the same player had another chance after Jo Durrant’s header hit the bar but his goal-bound shot was blocked on the line by Carl Vincent.

The Nomads deservedly drew level, however, when Jeremy Evans’ cross into the box allowed Smith to drive his shot home to take the game into extra time.

The action continued unabated, though, as McDonagh put sub Jamie Morgan through to score, only for Neyland to equalise when a Craig Harding corner was headed home, via the bar, by Andrew Davies.

In a frantic finish Pennar had Jamie Morgan showed a red card but neither side was able to find the net and so the game went into a penalty shoot out in front of a large crowd at the clubhouse end.

The Robins kept their cool to take the verdict – and skipper Carl Vincent received the silverware from league officials Micky Phillips and David Olyott.
