Pembrokeshire miss out at Miskin Manor

The County Under 12s team

Pembrokeshire U12s (140 all out) lost to Mid Glamorgan U12s (143 for 3) by 7 wickets

In their first fixture since a successful tour to the Bromsgrove festival, the Pembrokeshire under 12s were unable to find the winning formula against Mid Glamorgan after indifferent weather where the wicket at a very picturesque Miskin Manor ground proved difficult for batting with inconsistent but generally very low bounce.

Pembrokeshire will however reflect on two key aspects of the match because from a strong position the team failed to set a really challenging total and in response struggled to bowl a consistent line; the latter resulting in 44 extras being conceded. But this was by no means a poor performance with as always many positives for the players to take away.

Harry FullerCaptain Lewis Miller won the toss and sensibly elected to bat on what looked a very good wicket and with rain showers forecast later in the day. Miller (9) opened up with Owen Phelps (23) putting on 24 in good time. Jacob Owen (11) joined Phelps in taking the score to 46 before being dismissed by the excellent Faulkner (3 for 27). Phelps looked in excellent touch until playing an uncharacteristic shot to be bowled. Lucas Davies (29) and Rhys Power (10) took their team to a healthy 74 before Power was dismissed just short of the drinks break.

By now the wicket was making for very challenging batting conditions. Davies continued to play a handsome innings, along with Harry Fuller (25) moving the score to 109 for 4. A big score beckoned before Davies was dismissed by the excellent Hameed (2 for 8), who then struck again to remove Seth Willington in the same over.

Shay Norcross and Reuben Whitehead followed quickly. Fuller, who played a dogged innings, and Joe Phillips (6 not out) scrambled a few late runs before Humphries (3 for 39) rounded off the innings with two wickets in the 40th over. Seven batsmen clean bowled and two out LBW owed much to the pitch but also to the bowlers maintaining a good line throughout.

In response the Mid Glamorgan batsmen initially found the pitch equally as challenging so progress was slow but that failure to bowl a consistent line despite indifferent bounce saw the batsmen able to leave too many deliveries.

Nevertheless, Jake Thomas (2 for 25) made an early breakthrough before Lewis Miller (1 for 21) reduced the opposition to 35 for 2. But Williamson (45) and Hameed (37 not out) looked composed and happy to settle in for a long innings. At drinks after 20 overs the score standing at 67 for 2, the game looked even.

Thereafter Williamson and Hammed began to get on top of the bowling. These two put together an excellent partnership of 75, gradually wearing down the bowlers with solid defence and an ability to put the loose deliveries to the boundary.

Williamson became Thomas’s second victim thanks to a sharp catch from Willington, falling 5 short of a deserved half century. But Hameed was joined by the aggressive Humphries (13 not out), in taking Mid Glamorgan to victory with four overs to spare.
