Welsh Cup Round 2:

Charlie Perkins took four wickets for PembrokePembroke (68 for 0) beat Penygroes (66 all out) by 10 wickets

Umpires: Dave Bonner & Allan Hansen
Scorer: Josh Davies

Pembroke marched into the second round of the Welsh Cup on the back of an easy 10-wicket win over a Penygroes side which clearly enjoyed their day out but were unable to test Jack Harries’ team in any way.

The win was all the more commendable because they were without the inspirational Jonathan Rogers and the Hay brothers, Phil and Andrew.

Penygroes in trouble from the outset

Harries won the toss and elected to field and the visitors were in trouble from the outset against Rob Smythe, who went without a wicket but had two maidens in a typically tight spell – and Charlie Perkins, currently bowling for the second team in league games, showed his credentials with an excellent 4 for 19 spell alongside Paul ‘Chalkie’ White (2 for 10), Sam Davies (1 for 19), Will Randall (1 for 2) and Jamie Kaijaks (1 for 0).

Luke Butler 32no for PembrokeOnly Rudi Botes (13), Lloyd Beddington (10) and Sion Thomas (10) managed double figures for the visitors to Treleet and the only blemish on Pembroke’s performance was the fact that they conceded 22 extras, 17 of them wides.

Pembroke openers in a hurry

The Penygroes bowling certainly held no fears for openers Luke Butler and Will Davies because they reached their target in only 8.2 overs, with keeper Butler belting five boundaries in his 32 not out, made in only 20 deliveries, whilst Davies supported with four fours in his undefeated 27 (30 balls).

Skipper Harries was understandably delighted when he spoke afterwards to PembrokeshireSport.co.uk as he singled out Charlie Perkins for particular praise – but knowing that they are likely to face far tougher opposition in the next round!
