PembrokeshireSport.co.uk is delighted to have talented young hockey player and athlete in Ollie Wheeler as our ‘Star of the Month’ for January in recognition of his superb performances in both sports.

In hockey 17 year old Ollie has already represented Wales at a number of age groups as a free-scoring front man who can net goals almost at will, even when playing against senior players with plenty of experience.

Goals galore for Swansea City Hockey Club

For example, after playing for Swansea University for a while he returned to his former club Swansea City in the West of England Conference and has scored in every game since, hitting a peak against Cardiff University in an 8-0 victory where he scored two goals apiece from short corners, penalty strikes and from open play – and had an assist to claim in the other two goals as a bonus!

Ollie also scored a mammoth tally of 58 goals for Swansea City during his previous time at the club and no-one would be more delighted than parents Jane and Bernie, both very good hockey players in their own right, and whom Ollie singles out for praise for their total support and being great chauffeurs since he started out locally as a nipper at Carew Hockey Club.

It is a similar success story at Welsh international level where some of his most recent appearances have been awarded against the likes of Lithuania, Switzerland, Scotland and Ireland, often against players a lot older than he is but where he is still able to utilise his pace and stick skills to amazing effect.

Terrific PBs at Pembrokeshire Harriers

He has also caught the eye in athletics, at Pembrokeshire Harriers, which he took up and was soon excelling at long jump and then triple jump.

In the former field event his very first competition saw him win with a jump of 5m 23cms and since then his personal best has stretched to 5m 86cms and recently to 6m 48cms.

In the triple jump there has been another rise in success after starting out on 11m 67cms and now has a PB of 12m 21cms, both having him highly placed in the Welsh rankings and moving him up at UK level.

In both his sports there is clear evidence of high skill levels but there is also an old head on young shoulders who shows total commitment – and in being delighted to make him our January ‘Star of the Month’ we are convinced that we are going to hear a great deal more of Ollie Wheeler in the future!
