There was great news for the coaches and members of Pembroke Amateur Boxing Club this week with the successes of Nico and Kyle Morrison in the Welsh ABA senior championships, which were held at the National Centre for Excellence, in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
The talented boxing brothers, whose father Mike had 100 professional bouts, had shown their good form as both represented Wales against England at Hereford a short while ago and came away with unanimous points verdicts.
Then more hard work with coaches Nathan Probert and Andy Edmondson made sure they reached the semi-finals for their respective weight groups as Nico beat Angelo Jugani (Premier ABC) and Kyle overcame Jacob Robinson (Prince of Wales ABC) to earn their places in the final.
Championship performances – and selection for Wales
Nathan and Andy took them up for the finals and were in their corners as Kyle (21 and also boxing for the army) comfortably outboxed Joshua John (Briton Ferry ABC) before Nico (23) made it a family double with another unanimous decision, this time against Bill Edwards, (Dyffryn ABC).
It completed a treble success for both because Nico had won Welsh titles at junior and youth levels whilst Kyle had done the same, but at junior and schoolboy levels.
Their performances earned them inclusion in the recent weekend training session for the Welsh squad and both did so well there that they have received news of their selection for the Welsh senior team to compete against Serbia and Spain in a forthcoming multi-nation event in Serbia.
“It is no more than Nico and Kyle deserve,” said a delighted Nathan Probert. “We are extremely proud of them and the whole club wishes them more success as they go off to represent our country.”
