Mansbridge trio leads Seasiders to success

Winners SaundersfootAlan Brown Cup Final (Sponsored by the Webb family of Tavernspite Nurseries):

Saundersfoot (138 for 3 & 153 for 5) beat Llechryd (108 for 8 & 86 all out) by 97 runs

Umpires:  Huw Davies & Neil Croucher
Scorers: Adge John & Will Newell
Venue: Spring Hill, Whitland

Paul Webb and Sam Franklin Saundersfoot were worthy winners of the 2016 Alan Brown Cup Final as key contributions from Paul Mansbridge and his sons Tom (14) and John (15) helped them outplay a gritty Llechryd side led well by skipper John Curran.

The Seasiders’ skipper Sam Franklin also played a significant role in what was a terrific team performance as he batted really well in both innings and generally showed great tactical awareness in his bowlers and fielding positions.

Wonderful support from Whitland CC and Tavernspite Nurseries

This popular competition, held under the auspices of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, received its traditional warm welcome from Whitland Cricket Club with the Webb Family again hugely involved as sponsors.

Paul Webb chose the man of the match and picked out 14 year old left-arm spin bowler Tom Mansbridge for his superb figures of 4 for 4 for 20 and 2 for 17, whilst wife Janice and son Matthew were joined by Eleri Williams in providing a splendid tea for players, officials and almost all the supporters who turned up from both camps!

Runners-Up Llechryd Steady Seasiders’ start and momentum built nicely

Saundersfoot started off steadily through Paul Mansbridge and James Caine until the latter departed for 16, bowled by James Heneker with the total on 30, before Sam Franklin added impetus to the innings with three fours and a six in his 31.

He fell to Rhys Beard from an Adam Williams catch,  as part of 48 stand with Mansbridge, who adopted the anchor role throughout the innings and although Nick Cope departed cheaply, bowled by Mike Godfrey, a quick-fire 21 not out by Danny Caine helped Paul Mansbridge advance the total to 138 for 3, assisted by 19 extras, with the veteran opener stroking four boundaries in his unbeaten 44.

Umpires Neil Croucher and Huw Davies Llechryd battle hard but fall short

Sam Franklin struck early when Llechryd batted, removing Mike Carter with the aid of a good Nick Cope catch and although John Curran showed what a good batsman he is with an excellent 50 (five fours) only Gwion Howells (10), Rhys Beard (13) and Mike Godfrey (15) managed double figures in support.

The Llechryd batsmen found it hard to cope with the left arm spin of Tom Mansbridge (4 for 20 as Ashley Murdoch claimed two neat stumpings) and the pace bowling of his brother John (2 for 14), who joined dad Paul in playing key roles as their team went into an excellent tea provided by Janice Webb with a 30-run lead. Neil Powling and Sam Franklin also bowled good spells and claimed a wicket apiece.

Saundersfoot increase tempo in second innings

Saundersfoot started their second innings bolstered by their 30-run lead and James Caine had three fours in his 24 and Paul Mansbridge rapped four boundaries in his 34 as they put on 43 for the first wicket before Sam Franklin again increased the tempo with two fours and two big sixes in his robust 36 that helped his side into three figures as Rhys Beard, John Curran and Mark Newell claimed the wickets.

John Mansbridge (23 not out) and Nick Cope (21) also powered the run rate up with some late hitting and although Curran finished with 3 for 19 Saundersfoot’s tally of 153 for 5 left Llechryd with a mountain to climb.

Llechryd lose key wickets and struggle

Scoring team - William Newell, Rob Benjamin (back) and Adge John Curran (15) and Rhys Beard (20) gave Llechryd a steady start but they both departed to excellent catches by James Caine and especially John Mansbridge, alongside a duck for Mike Carter, to put them into a tail-spin from which they never recovered, despite double figures for Gwion Howells, Adam Betts and Mark Newell.

Danny Caine atoned for his golden duck just previously with 3 for 17 alongside Franklin (1 for 38), Tom Mansbridge (2 for 17), Neil Powling (2 for 10) and John Mansbridge (1 for 2) to leave the Crymych reply in tatters as they were shot out for 86 in 18.1 overs to leave Saundersfoot as victors by 97 runs.

Chairman Dave says ‘well done’!

Dave Brandon, the chairman of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, rightly praised both teams for their efforts and thanked everyone else involved on what was a very successful day for the umpires organisation.

Paul Webb presented the Alan Brown Trophy to Sam Franklin, the young Saundersfoot captain, and there were loud cheers when he announced talented young all-rounder Tom Mansbridge as man of the match.
