If anyone typifies the idea of putting plenty into their sport it is the husband and wife team of Liz and Nigel Rowland, who are hugely involved with the Pembrokeshire Harriers.

Liz coaches high jump with the Harriers after starting out almost 20 years ago when their daughters Amy and Ellie were good young athletes and she was roped in to help.

It was a similar story with Nigel and his work with young hurdlers is also terrific to watch as both have that sense of encouraging youngsters whilst getting across the vital techniques of their respective disciplines.

Liz leads by example . . .

Liz is team manager for the Harriers and West Wales competitions and she is renowned for her ability to get athletes to compete outside their own particular comfort zones and pick up points by participating in other events.

She is also adept at encouraging parents, who are dropping off or picking up their children to start an interest in the club, often as coaches but equally as important in admin or initially just making teas in the clubhouse.

. . . And Nigel uses his sense of humour!

Nigel is regarded as a really good motivator of his young charges and they clearly enjoy his unique sense of humour during tense moments when they are having to hone their skills in a very technical event!

Small wonder then that Pembrokeshire Harriers’ president Peter Freeman, himself a wonderful ambassador and coach for the club, should tell us,
“Liz and Nigel demonstrate all that is best in the Harriers with their total commitment and pride in the club – and we are lucky to have them involved alongside so many other great servants.”

We can only echo that sentiment and are proud to present our special ‘Star of the Month’ for July 2017 to two such smashing people!
