Kilgetty retained the Alan Brown Cup after beating Camrose in an absorbing final at Whitland Cricket Club, now the traditional home of this popular competition organised by the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers.
Camrose were five runs ahead at the tea interval but a superb innings of 87 by Ross Hardy, alongside a second good knock by Liam Cullen, swung the game in Kilgetty’s favour as four wickets apiece by Jack Parkinson and Anthony Bevan allowed Kilgetty skipper Ian Poole to pick up the silverware from sponsor Paul Webb.
After being asked to bat first on a pitch made a little damp because of a heavy shower, Kilgetty were rocked back early on as ace run-gatherer Ross Hardy smashed Ross Ellis’s first ball to the boundary but was caught by Aled Thomas from the next delivery.
Then talented teenager Kurtis Marsh was caught for single by Rupert Norman off a delighted Aled Thomas and Kilgetty were reeling at 12 for 2.
But skipper Ian Poole joined Liam Cullen and acted as the perfect foil as Cullen played some delightful strokes in his 52 runs, including seven fours and a six before he was stumped by Dan Wilks off Phil Rees going for another big hit.
Poole hit 29, including a powerful six as he also fell to Rees’s slow stuff as part of a 3 for 34 haul which also included Geoff Marsh (13).
Kilgetty’s final tally was boosted by 19 extras, all of them wides or no balls, and the general feeling was that a score of 132 for 8 was reasonable in the conditions.
Camrose made a solid start to their reply as skipper Dan Wilks and Richard James managed double figures before they fell respectively to Ross hardy and Toby Poole. Jonathan Venables also chipped in with 18 before he was bowled by Jack Parkinson but the innings needed impetus as they stood at 50 for 4 at the half way stage.
It was provided by Martin Tweedie, who gradually built the momentum as he swatted several boundaries in quick succession, ably assisted by Alun Harries, who belied his No 7 status with some lusty blows en route to his score of 18 before he was beautifully caught on the cover boundary by Liam Cullen off Parkinson’s bowling.
Tweedie had seven fours and a six in his excellent 52 but he departed next ball, this time caught by Jack Tucker to help Parkinson to a 4 for 40 haul, and although Camrose managed to take a first innings lead of five runs it was felt around the boundary that they might have added
a few more.
Hardy certainly made Camrose pay for his early dismissal in the first innings with a splendid knock straight after tea as he and Liam Cullen put on 58 runs for the first wicket before Cullen (26) was well caught on the boundary by Tweedie off Thomas.
Toby Poole and Geoff Marsh followed cheaply but again it was former Welsh international Ian Poole who used his vast experience to good effect in support of hardy.
A century certainly seemed in the offing as Hardy smashed eight fours and four sixes, one of which cleared the sight screen, the road and a house being built opposite!
But then he went for one big hit too many against Rees and was adjudged lbw on 87, and it was left to Poole (18 not out) and Bevan (15 not out) to take K
ilgetty to a massive 163 for 4.
Camrose needed a similarly influential score from one of their top-line batsmen but although Richard James (18), Venables (15), James (12), Tweedie (22) and Harries (15) all made useful starts they got out at key times and the innings lacked conviction as both Parkinson and Bevan kept the ball up to the bat and were rewarded with identical figures of 4 for 37.
Rupert Norman managed 12 not out but it was too little too late as Kilgetty kept the pressure on, and the game ended tamely as Geoff Marsh, who had a good game behind the wicket for Kilgetty, stumped the last two Camrose batsmen to give Kilgetty a deserved win by 26 runs.
The post match presentations were efficiently conducted by Allan Hansen, chairman of PACUS, who thanked the umpires and scorers, and especially Janice Webb, Nicola Owen and Matthew Webb for a sumptuous tea enjoyed by players and supporters alike; with Paul Webb (Tavernspite Nurseries) making the presentations.
